You picked potato because it grows faster than corn, but rice grows in half the time of potato
Fire is both less and more of a danger than you think: You cant start one on accident by buggering up cooking, the most common causes are from your power grid overloading, or enemy actions.
You wasted so much of your starting steel on walls and floors, steel is the biggest resource bottleneck midgame. I leave things unfloored until I can build up a stockpile of stone.
You couldve moved the beds instead of breaking them down and building new ones
Shoot Frenzy just means Matt was feeling particularly inspired about shooting, not that he went berserk like Tord
Buying a polar bear was a *staggeringly* bad idea, you cant manufacture your own components for a while , and it eats tons of food.
You didnt tell Claire that shes allowed to heal herself so she cant
Claire also doesnt have the minimum amount of skill to tame the wild woman, you need 7 she has 4
You also made zero attempt to actually recruit said wild woman, so shes just sitting in your cell eating up your food. You need to go into the prisoner tab on their character sheet and select recruit, then theyll get to work on that, it usually takes several days or weeks
Also you can hunt or forage for food, go do that instead of turning into canibals

I think he was aware about the uselessness of the polar bear even when buying it. But some things just can't be ignored.
He puts his first House on fertile soil and proceeds to plant his stuff on normal ground.
Watching him throw away a whopping 7 components early game made me cry real baby Jesus tears. Also leaving dirt floor in the doorways, so people keep tracking dirt everywhere inside. Also Claire can't hunt with a knife unless you draft her an manually set her to attack the target, which would have been a totally viable option early game for some quick rat or hare meat. ALSO worth basic familiarisation of the icons at the bottom right! You can quickly view overlays of ground fertility, beauty, ground stability, roofing etc. Ugh, no, must... not... micromanage!
Watching him put the butchers table next to the stove made me think "I wonder if he'll live long enough for that to be a problem".
I never thought I would see a colony that that would ever be a passing thought...save this one.
I always get lazy and throw my butcher tables into the kitchen... when I plan layouts I always forget to add a room just for the butchering... I know food poisoning is a risk... but thats what janitors are for lol

I'm convinced that's why you can increase the playback speed on TH-cam. You can get to the juicy bits faster without skipping any of the warning signs Jon completely misses.

Yeah if the last time he played was 4 & 1/2 years ago then there is a LOT of new stuff he won't be aware of, I remember when the only food was potatoes and you had to make the nutrient paste dispenser to remove the raw food buff - not positive but I think you COULD collect raw berries which were okay, but you couldn't grow them, only potatoes in the crop fields, waaaaay back when i first got it - so much has developed since then, lol.
When 4 in a skill is "he's bad but he's trying" and 5 in the same skill is "he's pretty good at it" you can tell the guy with 5 is Jon.
"Everybody loves hexes" which explains trying to make a witch coven in Crusader Kings 3.
Rimworld is one of those games where you need to constantly pay attention to the small things. Jon missing that taming the Wild Girl was too hard for Claire was irritating but with his -1 P stuff is going to pass him by so often.
I love that whenever Jon plays as himself (e.i. a character named Jon) he lets hubris infect his mind.
Clearly he did not study the Classics.

tbh one is a fairly well-polished game, the other is cyberpunk 2077, It had soo much potential but fell short(even taken into account the unreachable hype)

Just FYI, you can simply reinstall beds and other furniture at a new location, you don't have to destroy them and rebuild them.
Yes, but every time you rebuild a new bed, it is 'usually' a better one than the previous bed was, so i think he lucked out and got an 'excellent' quality one, as someone was sleeping listed as 'Extremely comfortable' - I always will set up a batch of like 4 - 6 bed builds and deconstruct anything awful or poor, sometimes even normal, I figure furniture needs to at least be 'Good' as a minimum for my colonists.

@@Star-Commander-Vong Yes, the butcher table lowers the Cleanliness rating of the room it is placed in, and cooking in a room with low Cleanliness increases the chance of food poisoning.

There's a weird misconception that Randy Random is the hardest one. He's not - he's random. He can be incredibly hurtful, or airdrop supplies onto your base, or leave you alone for five years. The one you need to look out for is Cassandra Classic. She will inexorably grind you into dust.
Randy ended one of my runs quick, he wiped out my base. With supply drop air strikes, followed with a robot ship chunk dropped on the single intact room of the base, which was being used by my only mobile survivor to tend the one unable to move; crushing them both to death.
Jon teaching himself rimworld is exactly what i needed in my life
Some tips for you Jon:
- you want to make a separate room for your cooking. the butcher table subtracts from cleanliness, so you want to put that in one room and the stove in another as if you have them together it will make the room dirty and make it more likely that you get food poisoning
- everyone does have pants on. you spawn with flack pants (which claire is wearing, those pants wee the ones she spawned with)
- cutting down trees does come from the plants skill and it effects how much you get from each tree + how fast you cut them down
- You wanna start getting your walls built out of stone ASAP, as both wood AND STEEL BURN!!
- instead of potatoes, if you want something grown FAST: grow rice, if you want A LOT: grow corn. place these growing zones over the places that have '140% fertility' in the bottom left and they'll grow much faster!
- the 'shooting frenzy' thing is actually GOOD! that little icon by their picture in the top means they have an inspiration, which makes them do one skill better for a certain amount of time. they get these more often when they're happy
- the cat will eat meals, you don't HAVE TO make kibble. you can see what each animal eats in their info tab. she'll also feed herself
- the 'hunter lacks ranged weapon' is there bc your pawns will NOT hunt if they don't have a ranged weapon, put down a crafting spot and make some bows if you want Claire to hunt
- room sizes are actually a bit ridiculous in vanilla rimworld, for a decently sized bedroom for your pawns you want it to be at least 5x5 in the inside area
- you can make sandbags out of any fabric / leather (i.e lightleather, birdskin) and not just cloth
- you can make claire manually hunt the animals by drafting her and telling her to attack them individually if you really want to
- taming the muffalos is actually a really good idea if you want to do any kind of caravaning as they have a very good carry capacity + produce wool (plus they're very cute!!)
- claire is asexual, so she probably wont ever accept any advances from your other pawns. this might cause some mental breaks for the boys as they keep asking her out and getting rejected, which has a big negative value for their moods
- speaking of moods, you want to keep track of everything effecting your pawns moods in their 'mood' menu- its really helpful for preventing mental breaks
- by default, your pawns are set to 'flee,' meaning that they will run if they see a hostile animal/person, you wanna change this to 'attack' so that if they see danger they will defend themselves.
- you want to make sure you tend to your coloninists in a CLEAN and WELL LIT room to best prevent infections, especially without a high level doctor
- you want to start researching stuff as soon as you can. getting a dedicated researcher is really good as it allows you to advance a lot quicker, especially in the early game where you don't have essentials like batteries
- speaking of batteries, you want to get those ASAP and then probb switch over to wind power instead of wood generators, wood goes REAL quick
- you can set your colonists to self tend so that they will use medicine on themselves (only do this on your best doctors though, you don't want bad quality tends)
Hope this helps some!! I absolutely LOVE this game so much and really would like to see a series of this. There is SO much to do and it gets so intense (ESPECIALLY WITH RANDY RANDOM, THAT IS THE GOD TIER WAY TO PLAY). Also, there are TONS and TONS of mods for Rimworld- so once you get used to the base game I'd recommend checking some out!! One really useful one ones are RimHud (see your colonists moods in the main tab when you click on them), Prepare Carefully (edit your pawns looks, traits, backstories etc. from the creation menu- you can customise them however you like!), Simple Sidearms (lets your pawns carry a MELEE and RANGEd weapon at the SAME TIME!!), and lastly Run n' Gun (lets our pawns shoot while they walk instead of having to stop!!). Those are just some mods that I love to use in every single one of my playthroughs, even 'vanilla' ones!! there are SO many good ones out there though.

I feel old remembering the old rimworld vids.
You forgot to enable Royalty!
He may not own Royalty. And for a first proper playthrough vanilla is probably best, since Royalty adds a fair bit more to worry about.
He has a hard time setting up a food supply in a temperate forest, I think enabling Royalty would just add too much complexity.
I still remember you and Dan talking about this on the podcats years ago- I kept them all downloaded as they're great to listen to when I've trouble sleeping
Boy have I waited long for this one! One of the games of the century for me!
A few things I noted while watching:
1) Cloth comes from cotton plants, which you can grow yourself! Or buy from a trader, of course
2) "Frenzy" is a good thing! colonists con be frienzied in many of the work tasks, and some other things too like walking, and general work speed, it means they do that thing faster or better for a certain peeriod of time, usually 8 days I think.
3) The darker patches of ground have 100% fertility, which lets your crops grow quicker.
4) Tabby is feeding herself from you meal stock pile! Carnivores will only eat a few things including meat, animals, and meals.
5) you dont need to destroy your beds and other furniture to move them around. You can simply select and move to a new position.
6) Wild people need to be tamed, like you do with animals using the animals skill, if you want them to join your colony. You designate that task with the 'handle' work order
7) If you only have one person who is good at doctoring, you can sert them to self-tend in their own health tab.
8) Once you have a prisoner (even a wild person) you need to recruit them by opeining their prisoner tab and selecting they type of interaction.
9) Yes, there are win conditions for Rimworld!

I took notes! I love this game and I love your content, in order of watching this video I have some stuff to help if you continue the series.
- Use the dark soil for growzones, its more fertile
- Steel walls are flammable in Vanilla
- Clean your butchering and cooking areas to lower the chance of food poisoning
- you can change the radius of jobs for where the look for materials, edit this for butchering and stone cutting for safety
- The icon on Matt is 'inspiration' its a good thing, mental breaks are the lighting bolt looking icons
- you can change building material with right clicking the icon, for most things (walls/sandbags/beds/tables etc.)
- please fix the dirt tiles under you doors
- there is a 'self tend' toggle in the character's menu
- you're thinking of dressers instead of shelves for the bedrooms
- There are prisoner interaction options under the 'prisoner' and 'social' tabs
there's always more to learn in the Rim but hope that helps if this series continues!

Jon, I know you probably won't read this, but your first playthrough of this game is what convinced me to become your patron all those years ago. Rimworld is, in my opinion, my perfect game and you're the one that introduced me to it despite the fact you weren't too keen. I couldn't be happier that you've returned; once you understand the fiddly mechanics it is brilliant
JON: Start farming earlier, and pick the darker soil with over 100% fertility so it grows faster. You can also tame and breed those turkeys. Food isn't that hard, and if you have a shortage, just search your whole map for things to hunt. Eating meals made from people will lower colonists' mood immensely. Build an electric stove, and get heaters up by winter. Don't bother researching bows when you could be researching guns. The only fire risks are forest fires, electrical problems, fire weapons, and pyromaniacs. Fires can't cross 3 tiles of concrete. Steel walls are slightly flammable. Clothes and weapons eventually wear out and need replacement. Doctors can heal themselves if self-tend is enabled. Colonists won't hunt with a melee weapon. It's a big, complex game, so best of luck.

I would love to see more of this! I know you don't generally do mods, but a modded playthrough of this game is easy to set up and really fun! The Vanilla expanded mods are great and not hard to understand!

One of my favorite TH-camrs, playing (again) one of my favorite games. Perfection.
A trick for building freezers. Build a large room with several vents on the walls, then build a one space wide room around it with a few coolers. Because the outer room is only one space wide the "room size" is considered to be very small even if you have used it to enclose a very large inner room, this allows allows you to bring the outer rooms temperature down to below zero without needing a dozen coolers and since the inner room has vents it will slowly equalize with the outer rooms temperature. This also gives you the option to close the vents in the case of power loss, trapping the cold inside the inner room longer.
I love watching RimWorld plays and now Jon is going to through in his own cheeky flavors.
I'm so happy to see this game was finally released. Many hours spent playing the various alphas/betas but haven't looked at it for a couple of years.
I don't think Jon fully appreciates that this is a real survival game, yet.

Never thought this day would come! Love this game, been playing it for years. My colonists have never resorted to cannibalism (severe mood penalty), perhaps look into alternate sources of food, rice is fast. Prioritise growing, doesn't need redoing until harvest: winter is coming.
Yes, the polar bear was ambitious, hard to train and needs meat, should rather try to get a dog for hauling. Hunting requires a gun. Turn self tend on in their menus, they can heal themselves, quality varies but great for emergencies. Create outside dumping stockpile for chunks. Read context menus, you can expand stockpiles. Cloth comes from growing cotton. You will run out of components, they're mined, look for light brown areas.
Taming the muffalo is great for wool and meat, often taming is safer than hunting and you can breed them. Use your wildlife menu to see what's on the map and how dangerous they are. Check the wild woman's menu, click on recruit, the game is gifting you a new colonist, might have to tame her first. Such a great game, I know what I'm voting for!

So about an hour in.. And Jon has turned to cannibalism, bought a bear that he's teaching to eat people, and he's kidnapping random people and putting them in a tiny little cell to await whatever horrifying fate Jon has in store for them.
Seems about right... 😋.

I knew this game was similar but I did not realize it literally is sci-fi Dwarf Fortress.
You know, I have heard people make references like this before, and well I have seen dwarf fortress before, and I honestly don't see much in common - to me, RimWorld is a lot like Prison architect, whereas Dwarf Fortress seems very much like CDDA I actually really love the setup for CDDA but the controls are really difficult for me, I think I am too spoiled with new 'WASD" style controls with mouse and keyboard, the old style controls are so foreign to me lol.

I am very happy to see you playing RimWorld. I'd definitely recommend getting the royalty DLC, since it adds some fun psychic powers and new armor. I think it's savegame compatible, but not sure. And if you end up enjoying this series... well, let's just say that the right combination of mods can make this game infinitely more entertaining.
