The good all days when the most you could do was play with friends, read books,do chores and still have spare time left and you were happy. Newer generations will never know what mental freedom is like.
I’m doing my PhD in social psych and I research the experience of the “gap” between the mind and world. People who use social media more often have a stronger sense of this gap. What’s troubling, is that the gap is also related to dehumanization, conspiratorial beliefs, sympathy for extremism, lack of meaning in life, avoidance, anxiety and depression. So yeah in plain terms I think social media is cutting off kids from the real world and messing with their humanity.
dehumanization: a cognitive bias against ascribing "human" virtues (consciousness, moral worth, etc.) to certain people or groups conspiratorial beliefs: distrust of institutions and willingness to endorse atypical and controversial beliefs (e.g., birds are government spy drones) sympathy for extremism: Willingness to offer emotional or even economic support for violent political or religious acts lack of meaning in life: A general sense that life is meaningless avoidance, anxiety, and depression: Self explanatory? There, the meanings of all the fancy words. What they add up to is there are a bunch of (young) people who spend more time "in their own heads" than interacting with the real world (i.e., "organic reality"). It's an interesting phenomenon and it explains alot about people in modern society, such as the prevalence of the variables mentioned above. Sorry if my post upset you and made you want to insult me. I hope you're having a better day today. @@davemathews7890
I find what you do fascinating and wish you great success. I just read an article abt Utah & their new legislation coming 2024. (…why I’m going down TH-cam rabbit hole 😂…) All the best, Rick
Yessss I had a whole long conversation about this when I was in my layover at the airport with a woman she was so kind and she told me about sites that can help kids… I feel like kids need to get off there phoned
Social media definitely plays a huge role in mental health struggles for teens. The constant pressure to compare ourselves to others can lead to anxiety and feelings of inadequacy. We need to focus more on real-life connections and self-acceptance.
Children are not supposed to see hundreds of photos and videos in a never ending timeline or feed. This causes information overload and a false sense of time. As someone who grew up in the 90s, there were limitations to news information and entertainment. It was rare to see children that contemplated suicide, sex change and severe ADHD.
We spend the the highest per capita on education per student but scoring less on reading, math, and science. What does it have to due mental health? Less job opportunities that required higher skill levels in the competitive job market including service sector that requires greater emphany.
I’m learning that it’s all about addiction and how the social media companies already know this, have data to prove, etc But, computer laws are 15’ish yrs behind the curve therefore these companies have no legal reason to change. Utah has new law coming 2024.
as a former hardcore user, it's harmful effects last now for at least 5 years after quitting, i have no urge to be social, or find new friends or any kind of love, it's permanent, it will never go away, too late to make a change
As a parent I would not permit my child to stay on social media all the time. It's unhealthy. Humans should be actively interacting with peers. They should be playing outside. We have a obesity problem in America.
Yes it does. Many studies has already shown that. What we need is a new architecture of social media that is not harmful for mental health, but beneficial. A real SOCIAL media.
Exactly!👍…yet I’m learning there are not many current laws for lawyers to grasp onto when making claims… Utah is coming out in march 2024 with legislation that could change the entire landscape.
When my grandparents were young, comic books and juvenile delinquency were blamed for destroying America's youth. When I was growing up, the blame shifted to television. Now social media is the villain. Seems like everything new that comes along gets the blame.
Good analogy. If you have seen…might wanna google Utah Social Media legislation for 2024. Addiction at the forefront and that social media companies know their apps have addictive traits in their computer code…something comics & tv due to platform don’t have. All the best, Rick
@RyanSymons No, they were certain that they were observing an epidemic that was in fact imaginary. Old people love to worry and complain about anything that is new and different.
I do think there are enough studies and evidence that social media is actually causing extreme issues in a large group of individuals. Comics are not even comparable to purposely addictive rage baiting algorithms which gives you access to almost the entire world. I still cant believe people even make this comparison.
In conclusion, the impact of social media on society is undeniable. It has revolutionized the way we communicate, share information, and connect with others. However, it is important to recognize the potential drawbacks such as privacy concerns, misinformation, and the spread of fake news.
I think that social media has both good and bad effects on teens’ mental health. I absolutely agree that it depends on the content that the teen is watching. They can watch educating content and benefit from it, or watch stupid content and deteriorate mentally, isolating from reality. It is also common teenagers watching someone’s perfect life (which in most cases is not that perfect), compare to theirs and get pressured psychologically. They should understand that what is shown on social media is not the whole picture and not compare to others.
My close friend Matt Gaetz says he supports underage girls chatting online. Matt says: "It's a great way to meet more mature people who are willing to share nice & profitable experiences irl." MAGA!
Social media has a negative effect on everyone's mind. People get too caught up with gaslighting and virtue signalling headlines that have no merit or truth. They get told what to think, and how to think. A perfect example is the comment you just made about Matt Gaetz.
