Powerful Story of San Francisco Homeless Woman, Her Dogs, and Neighbors That Care

  • Lynda is a precious human filled with compassion and love. She has been on the streets for a long time. Too long! The life of homelessness for a woman is extremely stressful. Lynda drinks and she has a mental illness. That doesn't make her any less of a person.
Let me start at the beginning. I was on the phone with a friend that works in San Francisco's homeless services. We started talking about Twitter. He told me about a video he saw online of a woman whose first dog was killed and then her second dog was stolen. He then sent me a link to this tweet: / 1129251284794597376
I contacted the woman who posted the video. Angela shared a little more of the story over Twitter along with this link to a news story about the man charged with a felony for killing Lynda's first dog: www.sfgate.com/bayarea/articl...
    I interview Angela at 17:30
I called Angela this morning. Angela is amazing. I wish more housed people would adopt their homeless neighbors as Angela has. When Angela first encountered Lynda and her dog, she was concerned about Lynda and if she would be able to take care of the pet. Over time, Angela saw how much Lynda loved and took care of her dog. Something else happened, Angela and Lynda became friends.
Lots of people love animals. It's common to hear people complain about homeless people who have pets thinking the dog or cat is not being cared for. The real truth is, homeless people often take better care of their pets than housed people. The other issue that needs attention so there are people who care more about animals than homeless people. I like dogs too but humans, YES HUMAN BEINGS, must always take priority over animals. If you care more about a dog or cat sleeping outside than a homeless person, you really need to readjust your thinking because that's all kinds of wrong!
Lynda eventually got another puppy. His name is Buddy. Lynda loved and took good care of Buddy. Bathrooms are a serious challenge for homeless people. Lynda needed to use a bathroom and asked a friend to watch Buddy. As puppies do, Buddy got into some turpentine that was laying around. Lynda tried to contact Angela but Angela was away. Lynda then took Buddy to another friend who has helped her watch Buddy in the past. This friend took Buddy to the vet but then refused to give Buddy back to Lynda.
Some of you probably think that's a good thing. It is not! Lynda needed Buddy, and Buddy loves Lynda. Even the veterinarian told the person to give Buddy back to Lynda. Buddy was loved and well taken care of. Probably better than most dogs! Just because someone doesn't have a home that doesn't mean they cannot love and care for their pets.
At the time of this interview, the police were involved, but Lynda still did not have Buddy. About an hour ago Anglea let me know that San Francisco Police contacted her and Buddy will be returned to Lynda tomorrow morning.
I wish I could say that's a happen ending, but Lynda is in desperate need of housing. You do not have to be a social worker to know she is vulnerable. We need to get her and all the other homeless people in San Francisco off the streets and into housing with the support services they need. To do that, we need you to advocate for your homeless neighbors.

This woman and her stolen puppies break my heart, what a beautiful soul, I had to stop and pray for her. I gave a homeless vet 20$ a couple weeks ago, and he smiled and said whoopie, and I told him it was a gift from God. Most people give change or a buck or two, and that's not enough. I am disabled and on a tight budget, but HaShem gives us what we have, and we are to share it when we can, and He will take care of us, because I have always managed make it each month. God bless everyone, and please help when you can.

I am 58, physically disabled, use an electric wheelchair, a mother, and a grandmother and was homeless and on the streets for close to 2 years! My 2 sons, that are both in their mid 30s, didn't even care. I was living with my youngest son. They both locked me out and left me shivering in the cold in the front yard in my wheelchair. It's a VERY sad situation for this kind of thing to keep happening to WAY too many folks! I lost my 3 Turtles due to the selfishness and carelessness of my 2 sons! 😢 I had made my 11 year old Grandson my Assistant on the permit for my 2 Box Turtles and this was a huge loss to him and my granddaughter too. I have a home now, but my 2 sons still mistreat me! My oldest son is homeless, I offered him shelter, he hurt me physically, ate up my food, and drained me financially because he's on drugs! I NEVER thought I would end up homeless when I was 56 years old. I have NO vices, but I do have to take medications for 2 autoimmune diseases and some other diseases. This situation with the homeless needs to STOP!!! My sons saw me out there a number of times and drove right on by. 😢

I’m new to your channel, so I’m watching this yrs later. This is really good to know. When I use to live in NYC I never got the feeling that homeless folks treated their pets badly. I always felt like they gave their pets more and gave themselves less. I did donate to a few homeless folks because of their pets. I’ve donated sometimes just because I was able to that day, but a lot of times it was when they had their pets with them. But it’s good to be aware of this and I’m glad Lynda got Buddy back. I hope they were able to find housing by now. 😪

I have been homeless 3 times in this life...the hardest part is always being on the go...never able to just relax for a bit...ones guard must be maintained at all times..socks are so very important..i used to dream of a new pair of socks..so for those that don't know..giving a pair of socks is everything...every time I had a full time job as well....i worked my way back into housing...
I finally was stable...but at the age of 22 in was hurt on the job and became disabled...perscribed fentanyl for my pain...but after two years was tried of feeling stupid so I stopped the meds cold turkey..luckily no withdrawal....docs were shocked but to me if one takes it for the proper use them it really is fine....my ignorance...as my docs later told me I was part of the 5% of the world's population that can't get addicted to opiates...the university of Washington decided to take my DNA to study and try and find a cure for opiate addiction...
Well I did force myself to work till my body shut down due to my disabilities...and forced with very few options....
Was approved for SSDI to make the story short....bit due to my age and only getting half the average in benefits as well the average person...i was looking at a return to the streets...
But I found out I can still collect my benefits anywhere in the world except for 13 countries...so I did some research..and moved
I currently find myself able to maintain an upper middle class lifestyle..supporting a family of three for around 800 dollars a month...in my city one can rent a two bed single bath for 100 a month...i see my doc for 10 dollars an office visit once a month and my meds are 60-70 a month...a live in maid is 100 a month plus their basic hygiene needs and food...my house in a gated community is 211 a month at a 15yr mortgage...my sons private school is 600 a year plus books and uniform...a meal at a fast food type is about 2 dollars...
I have lived here now for a solid 5yrs and the comfort of never having to worry for bills is amazing...i know I may be asked and before I get beat up in the comments please just understand that my choices may not be the best.course for everyone or you...but for me it was...and just trying to express the knowledge to others who may find themselves look at the future I saw for myself before I moved...
I know it may or will be asked...so I will say..i am in the Philippines...and although I picked this country it may not be best.for you..so if you find yourself considering this option..use your time and research what may fit your needs best...if anyone has any questions my email is motto966@yahoo.com...i have considered doing a blog of my experiences but am on the reserved side personality wise and not very tech savvy...please keep any comments on the positive side and thank you for taking a moment to read a portion of myself...i hope all find their niche in this life that leads to having the security, the community and well being we all deserve..

I sort adopted a homeless man, he was in great need of medical help think all I was able to do was purchase some colostomy filter bags for him. I lost him I haven't been able to locate him and it was 3 businesses nearby and myself who looked after him. I have position as property manager so I'm unable to house anyone or I'll lose my job but I'm really trying to figure out how to help more. My goal is to move someone in, give them some months to get back Up this is what most need. Shower, clothes, food ,shelter & sleep in order to get back Up.

Seeing caring people supporting homeless people is a grounding experience that gives hope and sometimes new understanding on what really matters in the passage of time. Great story on the forgotten/invisible people that can bring/give more to life than most college degrees on what the word success really means. I showed this channel to a friend at work that lost his mother early in childhood and raised by his grandmother to show he’s not alone in his struggle with life .

I'm from London, UK and was in San Fran a couple of years ago for work and I visited a park there, the name of I can not remember, but I was amazed by how many homeless people I saw there. I was a sad site and hope at least some of them have since found permanent shelter and are out of the misery. It's not surprising so many were on drugs as it's probably the only thing that helps them forget their situation for a few hours. We have our own homeless crisis over here, made only worse after lockdown and the upcoming rise in the cost of living with energy prices soon to soar by over 50% will cause even more to if not lose their homes, but having to decide whether to heat them or buy food, but not both. I really feel sorry for those who will have to make that decision, esp the old or those with young kids on benefits and already struggling.

I never realized that homeless people who have pets would have that problem, when they go to the bathroom they can't take the dog in. What a story. There are homeless people who have a hard time taking proper care of their pets but a lot of them take great care. I used to see a man here on Davie Street in Vancouver with 3 dogs always on the same corner & they seemed well taken care of. I don't see them around anymore, hopefully their situation improved. We need to love and be loved. For some of us, an animal doesn't judge-gives us unconditional love and companionship (emotional support). Too many homeless people, as this channel conveys. It’s easy to get on TH-cam and leave a few sad words and “God blesses,” but that does nothing. This society has become increasingly more cold-blooded the last ten years, but there are still those of us with compassion. Instead of wishing you could help, just help. If you pull up to a stoplight and see a homeless person asking for money, lend a few bucks. That’s a great start. It may be the difference between that person eating or not that night.

You might not want it to happen, but it is out of your hands no matter how much you pray for that person to be forgiven Annie Low Malaysia. Just know that your dog is in a better place where he will never experience pain and cruelty again. When your time comes to join him, he will reet you with so much joy and happiness. I know because I have experienced meeting my pets, loved ones who have gone on before me. You will dream of your dog and you will see how well he is. Hello! I am really impressed with what you are doing for homeless awareness. Invisible People showed up in my feed as a suggestion, because I watch these videos and have a deep human interest in homelessness. I have been homeless. Recently, I went through another situation where I could have been homeless if my family did not step in and help me. I am a college student (late in life). I have studied homelessness and written college thesis papers on what actually works. What our government is doing does not work (shelters which are a good temporary solution only). We have a huge shortage of affordable housing. We need more supportive housing, compassion, and assistance for people living on the streets. There are tremendous myths and assumptions about homeless people. Once I am out of college and financially stable, my dream is to become part of the solution and a voice for all homeless people. I live in WA state.
