Update: Derrick Is Back Homeless in an Oakland Tent City

  • Before you all start leaving comments about Derrick wearing an Invisible People shirt, it's all Derrick. I had nothing to do with it. Honest! Derrick and I spent the day exploring homeless encampments in Oakland and Berkeley, and this was the shirt he wore.
Most of you know Derrick from his first interview • Homeless Man Lost Mill... or the VR180 feature we did with TH-cam on his homeless camp • Oakland Tent City Home... . Derrick also helps moderate our live streams on Sunday night.
Since his first Invisible People interview, Derrick was to go into housing, but the housing organization working with Derrick was shady, and the housing never happened. Derrick was lucky to find a shared living arrangement, so he was off the streets for close to a year, but sadly, Derrick is now back outside homeless in Oakland.
At the time of this interview, Derrick was sleeping at the tent camp one full week. We were messaging back and forth on his first night, and Derrick was having trouble sleeping because the rats were too loud. Can you imagine not having any choice except to sleep in an infestation of rodents?
Derrick is amazing. He's still running for Mayor of Oakland / derrick-soo-for-city-o... , he's spearheading a tiny home village, and he's helping homeless people every day connecting them to services. Kymberli and Lenton are just one of many examples of people Derrick has helped • UPDATE: Homeless Coupl... .
Driving around with Derrick, he was trying to show me tent cities. I remember telling him I have walked through tent encampments all over the country, but later the day really hit me hard. Homeless camps in Oakland and Berkley are everywhere, and they are growing. What stuck with me is homelessness like this is the future of America unless we take action now to fix the affordable housing crisis and end homelessness.
Here's a couple that was helped by Derrick:

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

Even worse, the US military is "missing" $20,1 TRILLION (over a time period of 1 generation). TWENTY TRILLION, let that sink in!
They have "no clue" where the money went. What? That´s tax payer money which could solve the homeless crisis, fix the water problems in Flint & beyond and give every citizen Universal Healthcare. The social problems the US has is NOT an issue of money, it´s due to the careless attitude of politics.

Unfortunately there are many MANY people who are well educated, as well as many people who work full-time jobs who can not put a roof over the heads of themselves and their families once they end up on the street. Where they're working is either too expensive for rent or they're too busy trying to survive and aren't able to get first and last month's rent plus the utility deposits that they need. Plus the fact that once you're on the street, if it's through an eviction, the chances of being able to rent anywhere else is next to nil....if you have any credit issues (of any kind), it's also extremely hard to find a landlord who will rent to you; so it's just extremely difficult to be able to get off the streets unfortunately.

@@chonkcat7362 I live in Reality land, not CNN news land.
Here's a fun video you should watch.
      th-cam.com/video/-g4K7N5Lqa4/w-d-xo.html
First off though, you have to understand what real free market capitalism actually means. There's a lot of different parts of it, but capitalism, shares the same root word of Capitalize. If I say I'm going to go Capitalize on a business deal that means I'm going to go secure a profit in it, right? The best simple way I've heard Capitalism explained is if you make something with your 2 hands, or with your mind, or in any other way you have the right to keep the money you earn from whatever it is you did. That means very minimal taxes and fees and regulations from the Government telling you how you can and can't do something. Right now if you want to start a Barber shop, you have to first get a personal license to prove you can cut hair, you have to register your property as a business which depending on zoning laws may be illegal, you have to get a business license, you have to have inspections and other BS. You have to pay taxes through the business in various ways, and also separate taxes on what you pay yourself personally as income. You have to pay property taxes on your business assets, if you have a business vehicle you might have to register it differently and pay additional taxes on it. All of these fees and taxes is what makes America not capitalism. Because in capitalism you're supposed to keep the money you earn and only pay enough taxes to keep a small Government and to pay for roads, military, schools, first responders, stuff like that. Anything else isn't needed. Social security is a scam and a joke. Medicare and Medicaid are bad, foodstamps and unemployment are bad. If people weren't taxed at 25 to 50%+ just on their income, and then 2-10% on everything they buy at the store or gas, and taxes on hotels and vehicles registration then we wouldn't need all of these Government hand outs because we'd already have the money.
You have to understand that pretty much the only way the Government has to make money is by taxing people. So if all of these 'free' safety measures in society are paid for by our taxes, how about they just stop taxing us insane amounts of money and then we wouldn't have to use their hand outs? I make roughly 2,500 a month after taxes. I get taxed 600 a month. If I had an extra 600 dollars a month I could actually afford to live a more comfortable life I wouldn't need Government hand outs (not that I use any though).
The other part of it is the Government tells us what to do, you can and can't marry this person, you can or can't do these drugs, you can or can't be a prostitute. You can or can't do whatever. This is all wrong and unconstitutional. We're not free Iin America and we don't have capitalism because we're taxed, licensed, and discriminated against every single day.

This is actually making me depressed. I feel like he lost touch with himself, who he is and what he wants to do. All he wishes for his housing, but all he does is depend on a shady agency to get it for him. Then he is working on some tiny housing project--I kind of feel like neighborhoods will not like that idea if they ran out low income housing already. A bunch of homeless people in shacks is probably not what they want down the street.
They are passing legislation now where I live that holds rooming and boarding home operators responsible for what their tenants do. The police said they had to do four Narcan revivals in one place in one day, they get calls all the time, so it is a big problem. They are always trying to shut down these two rooming houses, but the thing is, there is no where else for these people to go. People don't want them around, but honestly, the people who live there have never bothered anyone around the area from what I see. I think it is just the very idea, some snobby people don't want the poor near them so they can feel they are elite themselves.
Rooming houses were like the first step to having an apartment. Now this step is being wiped out and the people who run them are being persecuted.
