6:13 this is really useful actually. servers choose what channels to show by default and users can also show/hide them if they want. this just allows people to show all channels which can be useful and needed when you're an admin trying to reorder channels.
Discord has a disproportionately bad UX for how popular it is and how pretty its UI is. It's a pain to message, to see notifications, to find friends or chats, to change notifications, to see who is in a server or manage or find servers, and a nightmare to friend someone (I've done it 50+ times and each time it's still a very long and confusing ordeal that neither of us understands)
It's the only time I've thought I was sending a DM to a friend only to realize I just sent it to the general chat tab of some random server. If that's not bad design, I don't know what is.
Remember the drama when discord actually put the messages button on the bottom uhh bar? So many people DEMANDED for a settings because they are just too used to having it at top left of the screen.
The tab idea is really good. There is a lot of space for the chat. Channels, threads all of that should work like tabs so a person can pick up one chat literally like a tab on your computer and be able to have multiple chats on your screen ( instead of 1 chat taking up 80% of the screen) if you want. Resize them and move them around. Easier message reading on multiple chats on multiple servers, and would be cool if the home tab was like that, specific chats important to you but minimized.

While this is probably just out of being used to what already exists, I actually want Discord to stop having changes done. I hated when they changed how mobile looked by having a different tab for DMs. There's also a right to left swipe to see recent channels/DMs. What I'd prefer to see is a redesign of Guilded as, aside from practically nobody using it, the design of the layout is most people's issue with it. Edit: What I'd actually like to see for Discord, or really any service similar to it, is the ability to mod it without breaking TOS. Because nobody is going to be happy with any changes other than the ones they specifically want. Sadly this won't ever happen with Discord because they need their money, but Guilded doesn't due to Roblox buying it out for a purpose other than profit. Though they need to remove the Roblox account requirement as that should've remained an optional linked account.
the "show all channels" is good for people who don't like cluttered servers and want to be able to hide certain channels, but not entirely mute them just in case they get pinged in them and still want to see the notification.
I dislike most of your decisions with your redesign, I understand your focus on making it less overwhelming and to make it less cluttered, however I believe you miss the point of Discord's main user base, which is not the ultra casual person, and although I do believe the current existing user experience could use some improvement, I don't think it needs a complete redesign, I find that you redesign disrupts the overall flow of the app that it currently has for something slightly slower paced and changes some things up that just didn't need changing, like the search bar for example. (also, you CAN change your profile banner's color without nitro, and the "find or start a conversation"search bar is NOT able to search for anything in the app, it is limited for friends and channels, for specific messages and media that's what the other search bar is for and I think having two of them is a lot better, and finally, Inbox should always stay in the top right, the servers bar doesn't need more stuff in there tbh)
I especially dislike how many elements are in the sidebar. looks really cluttered and it was pretty much fine how it was. the scheme of using big images for options is also more confusing than before, for example: in the server notification menu, why is the "mobile push notif" button (method of receiving a notification) right next to the "events" button (a notification category)? also many of the changes don't fit the current design at all (not to say that she is bad at designing UI, but she just didn't match discord's style with it, but discord's latest updates has that problem too anyway lol)

I literally have never updated my Android app just to keep using it.
oh yeah, i actually liked it. really interesting ideas in that redesign
i was sad when i saw the desktop style design back on my mobile
Okay damn, you know their design skills are INSANELY GOOD when they point out a bunch of problems in the discord UI you never saw before AND provide solutions to fix all of them
7:11 Never knew of this feature
The SINGLE most important design change Discord could make would be marking channels as my favorite, and letting me sort them together.
i wonder how many product managers just watch your vids and get a raise because of it like damn
I absolutely love the redesign. I didn't think discord needed that many changes until I seen this video.
I love almost every single aspect, besides the addition of even more buttons the the server list at the left. I feel like we should have as much space as possible for all of the servers we are in. Discord recently made the "Discover" button always be visible, and that is my most hated ui update yet
0:58 that was bad choice. I would hate not seeing the mic icon to actually be assured i am muted
Then you didn't understand what she said. You can always see it even when collapsed. I don't understand your point at all. And it's only collapsed when you don't need it.
@@sapkra to add to it, theres a tiny red dot in the upper right corner of the profile picture - it indicates whether you are muted or not
the top dot i guess shows u if u are muted or not
@@KIRA-br5fo Exactly!
I agree with you, other replies are correct but the new indicator is way too small. I liked the older bigger mic
I personally find discord so overwhelming, but this redesign is damn good
The bottom right option to view your server profile is PERFECT.
The redesign series is great, would love to see you redo Pinterest's nightmare UI/UX for the next video!
My word. Seeing how it could feel to hide parts of the ui immediately calmed half my brain
9:00 OMG YES JUXT YOU DID IT!!!! PLEASE DISCORD ADD THIS ASAP!!! So many good changes in here!
It's been added for a while
You just took everything wrong about discord and fixed it. Great video, keep going with this amazing content
you (or someone else) could make this a real discord theme that can be used with modded discord clients. 👀👀
the idea of being able to have channel tabs is actually genius, that's really perfect with discord's positioning as a DESKTOP messaging application where you have complex hierachy and structures with LOTS of channels, being able to make tabs for them, pinning things, and moving options around is honestly perfect for discord
I really hope that Discord's devs see this and take notes. Its genuinely helpful
Someone should make this a vencord plugin
frl
yeah just make a plugin to redesign the entire discord ui, that'll be easy
@@raylying No one said it'd be easy, no need to be sarcastic.
@@raylyingDawg it's CSS.
@@Dim.inished Dawg, it isn't that simple to do CSS, and this design isn't on figma yet making it even harder to recreate
Some things redesigned here are also pretty core things of discord's interface and would require more than CSS
This redesign might likely need someone to make a new client from scratch
3:30 the fact you darkened the screen when you turned on light mode LOL
3:24 *You can still change the color of the banner without nitro.
Exactly my thought aswell
"quick access conversations" (9:12) goes so insanely hard; it's a guarantee that we'll never see it unless it's a modified client
The double tapping to reply to a message is GENIUS. Discord needs to hire you.
It's been a feature before but they got rid of it
Please Vencord developpers MAKE THIS REAL PLEASEEE
FR
5:00 i think i was being stalked all this time
someone needs to make a vencord theme for it
JUXTOPPOSED, MAX THIS AN EXTENTION/MOD, AND MY LIFE, IS YOURS
Woah, the changes, ESPECIALLY those near the end were actually really good changes
1:41 I could not stop laughing 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
If you it doesn’t show the preview
Good to know but it just proves her point that its just over complicated
@@crafter4200 i mean not really, it's just markdown stuff, it's not over complicated most users should be used to them or atleast have heard of them
( also adding two characters on the start and end of an message is imo quite the opposite of the definition of over complicated, it's just not over simplified, i mean i'm literally doing it right now with parethenses )
will you post this on figma?
What's figma
@@callyral FIGMA BAL...sorry couldn't resist 🤭
Figma is a design software often used to mock up apps and user interfaces, and some tools even help you turn the designs into working prototypes.
You cam post on Figma? (I actualy didn't know I never used Figma before)
@@Monkeymario. "Figma community" is where designers can showcase and share their work
Figma deine Mutter
discord features are slowly turning into a nitro exclusive
The exposure change did not go unnoticed and is greatly appreciated!
9:21 Yay tabs are here 🎉
1:59 you... can do that? what the flip i've been using the app since forever how am i only finding out about this
exactly her point
2:28 having the consumer choose what they want to use? Absolute not; obviously the company knows what’s better for its user than the user themself.
Apple be like:
Honestly i loved the diff pages for diff chats at the end. Just too good
Again an amazing video! Short and to the point, with very good explanations and smooth editting ! How i wish i could use your UI instead of what we have. Being able to see one's profile server and the number of members is so obvious and yet !
You didn't go into it but i think calls and how forums work are also a huge mess, so there's potential for a sequel video :]
Alternative Title: I made the UI actually work.
3:54 lmaoo i know right??? 😭😭
This falls apart once you have content on your profile, if you have like 5 or 6 connections, an about me, pronouns, it takes up all of that space
At this poimt, just make a new app entirely centred around being cozy...
"Cozii" as a name, maybe? With specific colours to give off the cozy vibe?
Just putting ideas out for some app dev to see and make the next big thing
While this is probably just out of being used to what already exists, I actually want Discord to stop having changes done. I hated when they changed how mobile looked by having a different tab for DMs. There's also a right to left swipe to see recent channels/DMs. What I'd prefer to see is a redesign of Guilded as, aside from practically nobody using it, the design of the layout is most people's issue with it.
Edit:
What I'd actually like to see for Discord, or really any service similar to it, is the ability to mod it without breaking TOS.
*2:05 twitter. it's called twitter. and it never be called anything other than twitter.
i'm pretty sure it was a joke lol
Linkin Park server is based
Actually swipping to edit on mobile is something i do NOT want gone 😭
I've never had any issues just selecting a message and choosing edit, my finger's not gonna fall off if I gotta use taps instead.
Dude the option to pin DMs and the collapsible member screen is genius
they need to hire you (for everything you've listed here, actually!)
im always impressed with your videos they are so good
3:23 you can
I dislike most of your decisions with your redesign, I understand your focus on making it less overwhelming and to make it less cluttered, however I believe you miss the point of Discord's main user base, which is not the ultra casual person, and although I do believe the current existing user experience could use some improvement, I don't think it needs a complete redesign, I find that you redesign disrupts the overall flow of the app that it currently has for something slightly slower paced and changes some things up that just didn't need changing, like the search bar for example.
Shh lil bro, you don't know shit
I especially dislike how many elements are in the sidebar. looks really cluttered and it was pretty much fine how it was. the scheme of using big images for options is also more confusing than before, for example: in the server notification menu, why is the "mobile push notif" button (method of receiving a notification) right next to the "events" button (a notification category)? also many of the changes don't fit the current design at all (not to say that she is bad at designing UI, but she just didn't match discord's style with it, but discord's latest updates has that problem too anyway lol)
@@homie7218 I'm a graphic designer, I believe I have my own merits and valid opinions, not that one would even need to have any type of qualification to voice their own opinions, so lil bro, stop being a baby and accept that not everyone will agree with stuff

this one of the best UI videos i've seen in my entire life hands down
this feels like the spotification of discord, but I honestly like it even though I don't necessarily love spotify. great job!
This would be so good as a plugin, I am dying to use this.
i find it so annoying when google changes the design. same woth discord even though discord rarely makes noticeable ui updates and it better stay like that. i can feel and comfortable with any design as long as it's not being changed much at all
3:45 profile tab now more likely to show the same appereance when opening a user popup. for now, it only available to simplified profile experiment feature
4:05 the feature available but hidden. idk when discord make it released to public
5:30 double click to reply/edit are exist, but using a modded client plugin (vencord)
6:18 it's usually controlled under onboarding server settings
8:57 resize/collapsing channels are under development in the desktop visual refresh experiment. the experiment feature also for toggling the 2 new default theme 3:30
btw, you can use those experiments feature by using vencord
This was so great to watch, you're so smart
I realized there was an inbox button because of this video...
There are dozens of us that live without Discord, and we do not regret it at all.
💪🍻 discord is saturated of pdfs and weirdos! Proud of you man!
@@Lykkos-321you can just, choose not to join certain servers. Or make your own for just the folks you want to talk to. It's not like other sites, where the only way to interact with people is to go out and check everywhere you can until you find a place with other nice people, discord lets you stick to places you can trust while also allowing the possibility of meeting new people
Also, there's nothing wrong with using or not using discord? This video isn't trying to convince people to use discord, or othering people who don't, it's just that the intended audience is people who use discord
