Episode 35 - Maria Island

Maria Island was always something high up on my to do list and what better way to do it than with a couple of mates from Derby.
After leaving Derby we headed over for a quick swim/lunch stop at Bay of Fires. Then it was on to try and find a camp for New Years.
For our Maria Island adventure we camped up at the Spring Bay Hotel - which was a great free camp. Then it was off on the boat to ride our bikes around the island.
Having lots of extra kids definitely helped us keep our 2 motivated to keep on riding. I’m not sure how many kilometres we rode but geez it was a lot.
After lunch we decided to head to a beach for a swim. We were feeling a bit down as we still hadn’t spotted a single wombat. But thankfully we finally spotted one and then more and more and more.
All up we loved Maria Island. It was overcast when we were there but it was still stunning.
Our advice is:
If you are keen to see wombats they don’t really come out until around 2pm
It’s handy having an e-bike as there are a few long hills where the little kids were keen to have a tow on
Definitely take bikes - it’s a big island and you’d barely get past the ferry if you were walking
