- If you're looking for what to do in Oxford, join us as we explore the University of Oxford's Ashmolean Museum. It is the oldest public museum in the world, and contains Ancient Egyptian mummies, Roman and Greek sculptures, suits of Samurai armour and art by Michelangelo and Raphael. There's even the lantern that Guy Fawkes carried beneath the Houses of Parliament on the night of the Gunpowder Plot - when they would ignite barrels of gunpowder and so kill the King and all the assembled Lords.
The Ashmolean Museum is free to visit and is one of the top Oxford attractions.

Thank you my friends. I recall, with somewhat wry amusement now, the anxiety many felt at the news of the intended redevelopment of the Ashmolean, the extensive demolition and building work to be expected, the complete rethinking of many cherished displays !
Not without it`s difficulties throughout, but the results are nothing short of spectacular, with the Ashmolean attractive and thoroughly modern.

Interesting to hear how folk felt about the redevelopment of the Ashmolean.
I guess that seems the way, we so often fear change but know it's a natural process and can bring with it such creativity, in this case it sounds like a real success. Good to hear from you friend, we do hope to keep in touch, we always enjoy our correspondence with you.

The modernization of the Ashmolean reminded me that not all institutions get it completely right. Here in New Zealand ( although I wasn`t here at the time ) Te Papa, the museum situated in the city of Wellington, received strong criticism, for creating not so much a museum, but more a theme park, or an activity centre - lots of inter-active displays, bouncing balloons and so forth, to the detriment of traditional and informative content. I do believe that this has changed significantly since then :)
Anyway, well done once again - top shelf as always :)

Thank you for the video. I'm from Japan and went to Oxford almost 7 years ago. I visited the museum more than 5 times in my half-a-year stay. My old memory came back. It was a surprise to me that the admission fee was all free unlike in Japan, where you usually pay a pound or two. A nice place to stimulate your intellectual curiosity.

Hello, my dearest Y&M !! First of all I must say that it is a great joy to see the Museums open to the public again ... A sign of rebirth and rediscovered freedom that leads us to enjoy even more the beauty of a place like this that contains so many precious treasures of the past .
It must be a wonderful experience to visit the oldest museum open to the public. How much beauty and how much history!
I am always fascinated by it.
One of my dreams, think for a while and I'm Italian, is to visit the Vatican Museums.
I haven't been able to do it yet.

Yes it's so nice to have the Museums open to the public again, as you say a sign of freedom, it was just so good to be able to go inside somewhere for a change.
I did have a visit the Vatican Museum when I was 18 and still remember it well, I'm sure that will happen for you. Just think of all the adventures that are yet to come.
We are both well and things seem to be proceeding in the right direction. Here's hoping both you and I will both be back traveling soon. We've booked to go back to Madeira in September, so fingers crossed!!
