I'm thrilled you enjoyed the majority of this album! Unpopular by some Kate fans, but TRS is my favourite album, and has been for quite a while. Perhaps it has to be quite personal for me. You're the One got me through a lot last year, and into this year, so I've always grasped to this album as a comfort and a trinket of solace. One of the B-sides to TRS (single) is You Want Alchemy and it is for sure a song you must check out! A little ode to the bees.
I think it's a great album. It's her WTF It's going by fast moment. Breaking up with Del, her mother's death and noticing other friends death's. Plus that baby you never had start's kicking, Do I really want to be a popstar? Any wonder she just walked away for 10 year's and got a real life. Aerial is next and she comes back strong.
I'm glad your overall impression of the album is largely positive. Song of Solomon is my favourite Kate song. Something to bear in mind is the album was written with the intent of being played live so the songs are a little less complicated than is typical for Kate. Her one and only tour was as long ago as 1979, and she had only appeared on a handful of sporadic TV appearances since then so that would have been massive. Sadly it was not to be, these songs never got to be played live, and it would be another 20 years before Kate did any live shows, the 2014 'Before The Dawn' residency at Hammersmith Apollo in London. That was just 22 dates.
@boettcher66 By Hans Christian Anderson and directed by Michael Powell, (mentioned in "Moments Of Pleasure") who also directed WWII drama "Battle Of The River Plate" amongst other great movies.
The Red Shoes is inspired by the 1948 film of the same name starring Moira Shearer. The video to this song is a short film called 'The Line, the Cross and the Curve' and was directed by and featured Kate alongside Miranda Richardson and choreographer Lindsay Kemp, who had served as dance mentor to Kate early in her career.
The demo of Why Should I Love You, which leaked quite a few years ago, is much much better than the recorded version !!! The Red Shoes is my least favourite Kate album, I was really disappointed when it was released. Best tracks for me are Big Stripey Lie and Moments....I hate Constellation and You're the One.....
The demo version of Why Should I Love You is so much better. The album version is way too overproduced and feels like Prince took over a lot of the arrangement.
In the song "Lilly" (a spiritual psychic) Kate is singing about the "Jewish proverb" of "The circle of fire" which is "The Archangels">."Gabriel before me, Raphael behind me, Michael to my right and Uriel on my left side, in the circle of fire"..I don't consider Kate as being "religious" but "Spiritual" in a very "alternative way"..,"Constellation of the heart" is an "alternative spirituality" also, along with "Big stripey lie".. I've listened to this album (The Red shoes) since it first came out and have "read up" on a lot of the songs and what Kate has stated about them. This is where I got my info on the songs I listed above. I've come to the conclusion that a lot of these "haunting spiritual type songs' are the "Darkness of evil and the Light'..
At this point, "The Red Shoes" was Kate's most personal album due to everything that was happening in her personal life. This is most reflected in "Moments Of Pleasure" and "You're The One" which was written when she broke up with her very long-term partner and collaborator Del Palmer (R.I.P), who continued to work with Kate on subsequent albums. The desperation in Kate's voice during "You're The One" is heartbreaking.
If I want simple Kate, I put on The Red Shoes. It is her most straight forward and adult contemporary album, that was designed to be played live on a tour that never came to fruition. It houses some of her best songs, musically and lyrically, however production wise it was dated on arrival in 1993, sounding like it still belonged in the 80's. This is an issue with Kate's later work, the longer she works on a project, the more aged it sounds when she releases it. That aside I like this album, it has some of my favourite songs from her, it just suffers from being her least imaginative, most pedestrian release. A quote from the time that sums it up the likes of Tori Amos, Bjork, PJ Harvey were all making beter Kate Bush albums than Kate Bush.
Her short film that includes these songs is "The Line, The Cross and The Curve". It IS on youtube. You should react to that because I really find it hard to simply listen to these songs without the film images being in my mind's eye. It's said she wasn't really happy with it. But, I find the story and images really aid the songs. Beautiful songs. Moments of Pleasure is a tribute and speaking to her memories.
This was the only Kate Bush album I hadn't listened to. Not gonna deny that its reputation as the "least good" album influenced me. But there is a lot of good tunes in here that I'll be listening to again. I think what really sticks out to me is how of it's time it feels. It's the first of her albums that feels so easy to date in time, which might be why it stuck less with some people.
You could make a great album from the best tracks of Red Shoes & Sensual World. The best artists lose their impact with age. Tom Waits seemed to get better the older he got but I can't think of another band
Kate has an evil sister, Nina Hagen. Nina did a cover of Ziggy stardust: th-cam.com/video/IqgcByaNyhc/w-d-xo.htmlsi=qfdtJ8bJ54HIPqLq I suggest reacting to this track before attempting an album like Nunsexmonkrock (it will fit very well in your Rocktober). It was released at the same time as The dreaming and for me it stands the test of time even better. It has the same unhinged creativity.
An imperfect album, but I think time has been kind to it. I remember (when I was on Kate's fan forums in the early 00's) people hating this one more than Lionheart, I feel that has shifted some what. I do think the second half is weaker that the first, I hate, hate, hate You're The One. The Red Shoes is a reverence to a fairytale by Hans C. Andersen not the Wizard of Oz (those shoes were silver in the books)
aerial is next 🎉❤
Can't wait!
A Sky of Honey ❤❤❤
The sky is full of birds…

Big Kate fan and love this album. I remember when it came out and being thrilled. Aerial, too. I’ve never known why it’s underrated.
I tend to come back to this album more than the others. You're the only one is my favorite kate bush song.
It's interesting how much people seem divided on You're the One. Personally I find it to be a great track and maybe the best off The Red Shoes

Aerial is beyond magical ❤
I've been so excited for him to cover Aerial.
I love You’re The One!

You mention the top guitarists employed on this album. Did you notice who played the somewhat discordant guitar on 'Big Stripey Lie:?
And the bass...😏
The title of the album is, I believe, an hommage to the classic film The Red Shoes.

Contellation and the album version of Why should I love you are unlistenable
I like Why Should I Love You esp. Lenny Henry bits. Maybe a bit less Prince would have helped.
The demo version of Why Should I Love You is so much better. The album version is way too overproduced and feels like Prince took over a lot of the arrangement.
@@TheDreamingJuneBush is the PRODUCER so she has the last word.
@@TheDreamingJune .....and that's after Kate and Del took about 12 months to fix what Prince had done.
The most personal of Kate's albums. 'You're The One' in particular, takes us deep into Kate's heartache.
This album is a winner for me - love at first listen. Mind you, I also loved The Sensual World, and Aerial after.

Some real beautiful traks on this Album.its also not my fav, still brillant and moving. I often listen to

Also, it works well with telling us what the next album is in the end of the videos.
I love this album. I wish I could find a decent copy of the film.
"Big Stripey Lie" Guitar and bass Kate Bush.

I also hate You're The One
Kate's too low and you're too loud.
That's probably because of TH-cam and copyright stuff.
@@nikolanikolic1366 I don't know, others are able to find a nice sound balance. This is like Bea Arthur talking about Swan Lake.
You’re The One is crap. Like a bad Celine Dion song
I can't name a good Céline Dion song to save my life...
Céline Dion is not a songwriter composer, PRODUCER....
My Heart Will Go On was great . You’re The One isn’t !
