@Terry Hawk I never heard that before.....but I did read where the Rams' Jack Youngblood would many times take it easy on Archie Manning because there was such a huge difference between LA and New Orleans....whom were a bad joke.
In my opinion, his TD to Maynard was the greatest in Jet history because they couldnt settle for a FG, they had to stay up on a Raider team that could pass almost at will. Joe bailed out his defense today and the defense returned the favor in SB III.
I bleed Gang Green I love this game because I was born in 68 and my dad was a lifelong Jets fan had me on his lap when Maynard caught the touchdown. Can I please have my moment my dad did. I been waiting 50 years 🤷🏻♂️
I'm a Patriots fan, but agree the Jets fans deserve a good coach and a championship.

different game, different time, check out quarterback stats in the 60's and early 70's. Almost all have thrown more int's over td's.
the running game was more prevelant, teams only passed when they had to with few exceptions. most of those teams were in the AFL.
Tyler Sauls - That's the first thing I noticed. You see how bad the raiders suck in the years since dirty plays have been penalized.

Namath was a rock star pure and simple.
Around 2002 I was a Bartender at the famous Lakeside Golf Club. I was there a few years. It's in the Toluca Lake/Burbank area of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles. The annual Sports Golf Tournament was played there. This is the club where Bob Hope used to be a member, brought in by Bing Crosby, and an entire history of huge entertainment celebrities, even aviator Amelia Earhart used to own a home off one of the greens. I had been on shift in the men's bar for about an hour. I see a guy sitting alone at a table off in the short distance. Like he had just finished the course for the day. Maybe waiting for someone. A couple minutes later after making some cocktails for others real quick, I walked back to the left side of the bar. He caught my eye, stood and walked up to the bar. It was Broadway Joe. He smiled and ordered an Absolut on-the-rocks with a lemon peel. I'll never forget that. He stayed there and we started chatting. I had 10-15 minutes of uninterrupted bliss with not only my favorite QB from childhood, but my Dad was a big Jets fan, as we're from New York. At the club, it's not open to the public like a country club is, this was privately owned by each of the members. Joe was invited as a guest that day. From day to day there, you don't know what legend is going to walk in at any time. It was an unbelievable place to tend bar at. Namath was as nice as he always comes across in any medium. That's because he's completely genuine. That side of him, after all the stardom and limelight, in my opinion, is what makes him such a special person and unique talent, both on and off the stage. And I'm so thankful that he's still with us. This coming May 31st, he'll be turning 80 years old. The NFL should do something for it.
Having seen Namath play, to this day, I think he one of the greatest passers of all time. In that wind in Shea Stadium was impossible! Just saw a stat as the Jets look for a new QB, Namath still holds the record for passing yards in a season at 4,007. Incredible that he did that in the '60s when guys were leading the league with just over 2,000 yards. Amazing.
Don Maynard was my Auto shop teacher in the 70's he was a great Man he Loved talking about Joe and the 1968 Championship Game.
Joe Namath was the old AFL. He and Al Davis forced the NFL to merge with the AFL. Thank you Joe Namath. Paul Bear Bryant said you were a renegade undisciplined field general. My grandfather said you were the best quarterback he ever saw against the Oakland Raiders.
Field conditions back then! Imagine, the AFC conference winning QB says he scored the winning touchdown based on a play some guy at a tavern told him.

I believe that was Petey the cab driver. Joe took his advice. Heard that in an interview many years ago.

To all in the comment section saying joe namath wasn't one of the greatest remember he played in the 60s and 70s and they were not throwing as much back than and you did not see guys passing 4,000 plus yards a season the game was way different and tougher back than then now.

Namath was a natural, I suggest to all that you read his book. I never knew the Chicago Cubs recruited him and was offering 50K a huge sum at the time for Namath to play for the cubs. It's a shame his kids had issues. Namath is perhaps the most important figure in the history of the NFL

QB's today can't be touch once they throw the ball. Back in Joe's day, QB's were fair game for a few seconds after they passed. QB's are treated like egg shells today, once they release the ball. No comparison.

I wouldn't be so sure the Raiders could have beaten the Colts in SB III if that happened.
Martin W Weeb understood the Colts. But the physical aspect of Snell and Boozer were key.
@@davanmani556 Also, the Colts had not faced an offensive line that good since their loss to Cleveland. The patience of the line to wait before setting and allow Joe to run the play clock down really frustrated the Colt linemen ...

The game should have been played in Oakland. The Raiders had the better regular-season record and should have had home-field advantage.
Namath threw it 75 yards in the air? Now I'm not a rocket scientist or anything but he threw it from the 33 and Maynard caught it at roughly the 10 yard line so let's do some 1st grade math here that's a 57 yard throw
Youre right, a 57 yrd throw vertically but another 20 yrds horizontally ... the hashmarks were more wider back then ...
His argument was the hypotenuse of a right angle. That is the longest side of a right triangle. He was running diagonally, not straight down field, so possibly it was closer to 75 yards.
Watch clips from Super Bowl III and notice how far back Namath would drop from the line of scrimmage to pass… usually every bit of 10 yards.

AFL rules. The East and West alternated playoff sites each year. East Divisions turn. Win, loss, or head to head, had no bearing.

You don't know what you're talking about. Different game. Different rules. Nothing like the offense-centered current game. He led the AFL to equality and saved it.
I remember his charisma, his swagger and his ego. But on the biggest stage, he backed it all up. Maybe a bit of a one hit wonder, but man what a hit it was.
This was an era when there were very few short or dump passes to running backs and the shovel pass was against the rules plus much more man versus zone coverages. All those of today’s game pad QB’s completion percentages. Plus, for Joe’s first few years in the league, he was admittedly undisciplined and often played hungover. Even with that, he was the first QB to pass for over 4,000 yards in ‘67. Smartest thing the Jets did in 1968 was elect Namath the team captain, which caused him to grow up as a QB. Also, people forget that QBs called their own plays back then. In SB III, Namath called half the plays at the line of scrimmage after reading the Colt defense.
Football in the 60s and 70s was completely different than today. Namath took a beating and the rules were far less advantageous to pass receivers like they are today. He is legendary.
Other qbs played in the league, too. And there were hof ones. Len dawson, Sonny jurgensen, Bob griese, and Fran tarkenton, to name a few, and those guys were really good, playing under the same rules. Namath was not. Carried by a defense. His ego was disgusting

Say what you will about Super Bowl 3 or even the NFL today. I still think the NFL/AFL was more legit in the 60s and 70s than it was from about the 90s on.

Defensive backs could rough up wide receivers, before the rule changes due to mel blount in the 70s and further changes in the 2000s. You could basically hit the qb however you wanted to and the passing game for offenses wasn't that far developed with no west coast offense, etc. Look at stats of qbs like Bradshaw and Staubach and how they pale in comparison to today's stats. Its not because those players sucked, but how the game was back then.

Lets see ... he called every offensive play of that game which generated over 36 minutes in time of possession. He built a 16-0 lead over the Colts with less than four minutes to play ... He threw for 206 yards in only three quarters without a turnover ... he never threw a pass in the fourth quarter. Did I miss anything ? Oh yeah, he won the game ...
