  • On Monday I took our new 2020 Surly Wednesday fat bike out to the multi-use trails in the Sam Houston National Forest just North of Lake Conroe here in Houston, TX. These trails get sandy and muddy and a fat bike is perfect for them! 17 miles kicked my butt so maybe I'll take the ebike next time or just get in better shape. If you are interested or maybe knows someone who is in buying or renting the Surly Wednesday or the Surly Pugsley let me know!

    I just put a deposit on A Wednesday... liked your video... What wrist strap (for your phone) are you using?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey, sorry for the delayed response. That was a Palm phone sport sleeve. Should be able to find it on amazon, however it is made for the palm phone specifically. I use to use it to navigate around. Battery life wasn’t great though, but could work if you only ride for a couple hours

    I've been curious about some trails up north. Thank for the tour! That's an awesome monster bike. Lol

      Thanks for your comment! Yeah they are a fun option with the right bike if you want a nice long ride in the forest. Huntsville is fun too and more compact and twisty.

    Very nice! Thank you for your review.. Can I ask what is tour heigth and how you felt on the Medium size?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the comment. I’m 5’8” and feel great on the medium. If I was a little taller though I’d go for the large (or if you are someone who likes to be stretched out further). Hope that helps but if you have more questions let me know

    Did you ever figure out what was making the chain fall off? Did you ever put the tires tubleess? Thank you for the video.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the question. Still haven’t gone tubeless! It’s on my list but we got swamped at the shop the last few months. Will do it soon though. Yes the low gear so big gear limit screw was off just a bit. Readjusted everything and have ridden it a couple times since this video without any issues. This could happen with any drivetrain but it seems 12 speed systems are a bit more sensitive at least for me.

    What psi do you run in those tires? Looks like a cool bike but I'm not sure how I would feel about having a fat tire bike as my only bike. What kind of drone do you have? Nice aerial shots!

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Good question on PSI, no clue! They aren’t setup tubeless yet but will be soon. Yeah depends on where you live and ride. It has compromises but also is one of the few bikes that could go anywhere🙂. Drone is a Mavic Air. Great little drone that fits nicely in my pack, thanks!

      I live in Pensacola Florida. Not a whole lot of hardcore mountain bike trails. I could definitely make a fat bike my only bike. I could spend hours riding through the woods on one of those monsters 😂.

      C.Brown76 Thanks for your comment. That’s awesome, yeah buy one, they are a lot of fun especially if you have sandy and loose conditions. It brings a smile to my face each time I ride one. Take care

      Sweet! Yeah I like it too. I wish I could buy more of them but they are all sold out, so just have the one still at my shop that I ride occasionally. Makes me smile everytime!

    What makes the chain drop on this bike? The trail conditions, the bike itself, or maybe just the rider 😉?
    Enjoyed the video. I remember those trails all too well

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha! I think a combo of all 3 on this one but I’ll blame the bike this time 😆. Yeah you love those trails! Next time we are doing it on ebikes

      I’ve had my Surly Wednesday for three years now... I ride roughly 50 miles a week year round in all conditions... to this day I can’t remember ever dropping my chain... just saying 😉

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@hstrymkr4 Thanks for your comment! That is great to know. What drive train do you have on your Wednesday? Just curious. I'm not blaming the Surly at all, more likely my adjustment which after I got back from this ride found that the limit screws somehow were out of adjustment (even though I remember checking them before the ride). I actually just rode another bike with the SRAM SX 12-speed drivetrain and they can get out of adjustment pretty easily unfortunately so I'll keep monitoring

      I had the 2x10 setup for the first year, then I upgraded to 1x12 (gx eagle wit a dub bb) I like it a lot, but im finding I could have easily gotten away with a 1x11 setup. I hardly ever need the big ring... it’s mostly for ripping barns down and ripping airplanes out of the sky 😜

    does no one help maintain the trail system, maybe a chainsaw to clear down trees?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your comment. Yeah it doesn’t seem so unfortunately. Since it is a multi use trail, lots of different users but nobody seems to take ownership of it. The motorcycle guys just go around them, it’s too muddy and loose for most mountain bikes (unless you have a fat bike or ebike). Also tough to carry chain saws that far in on a bike. I think the forest service should maintain it but who knows. I need to get out there again, maybe next time will come with a crew! Take care

  • @rampagerentalrepair
    @rampagerentalrepair 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Sram SX is complete garbage that’s why your chain is dropping.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ha, uh oh. I’m new to SX and have it on a few bikes in the shop. What happened with yours?

    • @rampagerentalrepair
      @rampagerentalrepair 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Biking Roots I am a bike mechanic and I warranty at least 3-5 SX derailleurs per week out here in Utah. When NX eagle came out it was the same way but SRAM has seemed to figure out those derailleurs. SX is a great way to get at 12 speed drive train for cheap but if you actually ride your bike then SX will not perform the way the consumer wants.

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dylan Fosselman thanks for your reply and insight! Oh wow that’s not good to hear... especially since some of my Marins come standard with that drivetrain. What part of Utah? Lived in Provo for 5 years, miss those mountains!

    • @TheLankyCyclist
      @TheLankyCyclist 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've had the same issue with my SX. I thought it was just a limit screw issue. Maybe will need to upgrade at some point.

    At 6:11 I like how you casually state, "hopefully, I can do the full 16 [miles] cause that's where my car is". Still riding the Wednesday?

    • @BikingRoots
      @BikingRoots  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment and so sorry for the delayed response. Ha, I remember that day! Yes, actually one of the few bikes I still have from back then. I use it occasionally (usually when weather isn't great) and actually just recently upgraded the brakes and the drivetrain. It's running pretty sweet these days!
