- Super Mario 64 has a large variety of different stages, some of which being some of the most unique in the entire series. However, due to this being the first 3D Mario game, a few themes had to be repeated. This includes the snow theme which is seen in Cool Cool Mountain and Snowman’s Land. So in today’s episode of Level By Level we are going to compare CCM and SL together to see which is Mario 64’s BEST Snow stage? We’ll also be putting each of these level’s stars into a tier list!

A funny piece of trivia: it’s actually pretty realistic that the mama penguin doesn’t try very hard to stop you from getting rid of her baby. Real penguins will often favor self preservation over protecting their young from certain predators, particularly petrels.

As Cool as Cool Cool Mountain is, I just don’t think the coolness of Cool Cool Mountain is as Cool as the Coolness of my Cool boy, Cool Bowser who was dancing to the cool music
I'll be honest, It took me a while as a kid to realize they where completely different levels, since the painting you jump trough in the mirror's reflection is the same as cool cool mountain's painting

I’m partial towards Cool Cool Mountain as it has a better atmosphere and has more memorable elements. CCM feels both barren and cozy, has a slide, and has cute penguins (you’re a monster if you throw them off the edge), whilst Snow Man’s Land has the giant snowman, the igloo, and the underrated Chill Bully.
If only Bowser was in one of these, it would be a canon "cool" Bowser appearance
One thing you didn't mention about Whirl from the Freezing Pond; If you are in the water while jumping on the Spindrifts, the Spindrifts will instantly die for some reason. Idk if this is a glitch, but it made the star much more frustrating.
I always love his Mario64 thumbnails because they always look so funny, like what is Mario doing next to that penguin? He looks so scared! What did the penguin do to him?!?!
I remember Snowmans Land was one of the stages I didn't find until after beating the game, along with Shifting Sand Land. Also, Big Penguin Race was one of the last stars I completed cuz I couldn't beat the slide without the shortcut for a while.
i NEVER knew that the penguin “gains weight” after you get all 120 stars. it’s so wild to learn new things about a game i played as a kid over 20 years ago 😭

Funny enough, on my very 1st play through of super mario 64 in 3D all stars, for cool cool mountain's 6 star "wall kicks for work" i found it and got it early by complete accident. I was going for the 8 red coins star when i accidently fall off the mountain to what i thought was certain death, but i somehow managed to land on the platform leading up to the star. That was some serious luck on my side!
The Snowman's Lost His Head star has two main requirements to get the snowman body to follow you towards the head:
- Touch a certain region about halfway down the slide before the snowman does
- At the time the snowman reaches the end of its path, be inside its field of view.
The reason why the star is so confusing is because most of the snowman's head actually isn't in the field of view, so simply waiting behind the head likely won't work. Instead, you should stand to the right of the head (as seen from the body's perspective). Once the snowman body sees you and starts rolling towards you, then you can move behind the head to guide the body towards it.

Am I the only person that got to the bottom of Cool Cool Mountain by jumping on a Spindrift and hovering down? I honestly didn't know there was another way to get there until I was an adult

Cool Cool Mountain will always be SSS tier for me because it taught child me the important lesson of manipulation, grief, and sacrifice (aka throwing the baby penguin off the cliff in front of his mother)

I just played through Super Mario 64 for the first time a couple weeks ago... it was peak.
I was kind of distracted while watching the video but when I heard Creator I instantly put my full focus on it

Did you know that the snowman star checks if you collected the coins in the slide I discover this after wasting several hours trying to complete that level
Merging these two levels would be awesome plus you could create another star by sending the other baby penguin to the other penguin on the bridge.
I love watching people react to the penguin mission for the first time and seeing their hatred for the baby penguin evolve as the level goes on 😂
Finally, a level by level set in Canada
you need to touch two checkpoints along the snowman’s route in order to get the star, which I bet is why you the snowman sometimes misses you at the end

idk if its already been said buuuuuut:
another youtuber actually explains the wonkiness of the snowman head star. its the hitbox thats extremely off center. u can't just go infront of or right behind the head. u have to be standing a bit a bit to the...right? of the body for it to trigger the head to go the the body. if u dont go into the hitbox, the head wont go to the body. i suck at explaining things so just look up the snowhead head star and u should find it. he explains it way better than i ever could XD

For someone whose favourite games are Mario and Minecraft, I can't believe you haven't talked about the Mario mash-up pack on Nintendo versions of Minecraft.
I feel you would rant about about every aspect of the map, skins,textures etc.

For the snowman head star you are supposed to let the big head follow you. That means go down in front of it within its "vision" the whole time. If it "loses sight of you" then it won't follow you at the end and you will lose the chance for the star. The fact the game does not communicate this concept to the player well at all makes this well deserving of the F-tier that you gave it in the video as many don't even know about these mechanics.
Just punch, kick or bump into the head and the body will automically follow and connect with it, yes it's not explained but he also gave "lil penguin lost" an S for a risky shortcut most people wouldn't do on their first playtroughs.

When I was a kid, I would always go into the CCM-slide first when I wanted to get the 100 coin star, but I get that it's a genuine complaint for some.
Cool Cool Mountain is my favorite stage in SM64, an easy S-tier for me. Even though, yes, it does have one bad star, but on the plus side, it"s a short one that you can restart quickly if you fail.
What about the two wingcap stages? Or LLL and fire sea? Those could be interesting discussions.

The SNES Super Mario games didn’t have very many snow-themed courses, so I don’t mind that the main Super Mario game on the following console had two of them.
Even if you don't really like the galaxy games, i think a comparison of the fire and levels in galaxy 1 vs 2 would be a cool video

I've always preferred Cool, Cool Mountain. There's more to do and when you get used to the sliding controls, the ice slide is a breeze. Snowman's Land is a below-average follow-up but I think the Igloo, giant blowing snowman and Big Chilly help to make it memorable.

That red coin on that unconnected platform - literally just jump off the warp at the start. As for the snowman star, you cannot skip any parts of the slide, or it will break.
