Thank you for this! I had 0 miles of gas left and when I pulled into the gas station the damn door wasn’t opening! After getting it open by doing your little hack I cleaned the latch and the little lock looking thing and everything is back to normal and I have a full tank of gas!
It cost me $174 for Toyota to fix my gas cap door. But, it happened again 3 days later. So I fixed it by pointing my Toyota key at the gas tank door and pressing the unlock button. Simple. I've used that trick time and time again.

@@ahmedmugwar4966 oh i did buy a new one. I followed the steps and was so easy. I was talking about how to fix the problem with Toyota’s springs breaking. My car is only 3 years old. How many times am I gonna have to replace them?

@@ahmedmugwar4966 thank you for your reply. We ended up taking it to the shop. Turns out the pull part was dry rot and could not reach the cord to open the gas door. Unfortunately They no longer make the part for 2003 Highland so there is a cord sticking out to be pulled in order to open. Hey could be worst lol. Thanks again.

Do you mean the spring changing? If so you have to buy a new one to change it.
