Kadett E GSi 16v has won awards for its time. -Aerodynamics 0.30 -SUPERIOR engine for its time (c20xe) -Design -Performance -Reliability Astra mk2 GTE is A LEGEND
I've driven a white MK4 RS. I loved it. It smoked a barrel of oil trough the exaust when i was on full throttle but i was always ahead of gti, vtec and gse. The 80 and early 90ties was a nice time. Cars with 900kg and nice power without computers to tell you how to drive. thx for this nice vid!
dave davies A gathering of 25 year old males congregates outside the local " Spar" to compare their RST with someone elses RS1600i with their fake Lacoste tshirt - spitting and smoking of course, whilst discussing who is hotter, Vicki or Natasha.
dave davies which sadly is still better days than kids sitting in mcdonalds on there phones wishing they could afford an Rs or even afford insure a 1.2
RS all the time, lightier, independent rear suspension, and a lot of other qualities, not a surprise, the escort was a best selling car for a decade or more... RS, The true legend, proud to own one
I remember these hot hatches back in the late 80's to 91. The Germans reviewed them a bit differantly though. They had the Golf GTI16v, Escort RSturbo and the Kadett E GSi16v. GTI 129hp, RSturbo 132hp, and the GSi 150hp. The GSi beat the Golf and the Escort in speed and performance. Also the Escort was disqualified due to the lack of a catalic converter which the other 2 had. The GTI did the worst due to its lack of areo dynamics. Heck the standard GSi (2.0i 115hp) ran faster than the GTI16v back then! The Escort was still sharp though.
I used to own a black s2 it was my second car that brought I got it when I was 20 apparently I have found out there were only 3 black ones made it used to be amazing fun to drive.
so we found out that the RS turbo may have been a fraction quicker on a specifically winding short track? the Astra GTE would leave it for dead in a drag race
Escort wins :-) I've got one myslef, handling is a bit hard somtimes, but the car has outruns most of it's rivals of the time :) Golf GTI, Kadett GSI, BMW 325 enz. Plus, you never get bored in the car, driven many cars, fast cars, the escort stays interesting, even if it breaks down sometimes. And about the power... A chip, a bit more boost, bigger exhaust, and you've got around 170 bhp and proper torque from 2500 rpm... Beat that with your 16V :-p
@keidicko CVH is an ok engine, the bottleneck of the RS is the management system. ZVH is a zetec bottom used to get a bigger bore size, so you can use a bigger turbo and get less lag. My pistions did 150k km before i swapped them. So that ain't halfbad with the thougth of how it has been driven. But the Vauxhall is more reliable i'll agree to that :)!
I was about to leave the same comment :D The GSi was the fastest in its time.. everyone knows that.. it supposed to beat all GTI-s and everything!! GSi for life (As for me, Im the luck owner of the 44447-th Kadett GSi Cabrio by Bertone :P) GSi 4 LIFE!!!
mmmmmmmmmm im no aware of the rs having pas it might be a manual addon i seem to rem my rs used to have mechanical abs its poss he got his info wrong with the abs part it does happen
If any body hasnt noticed the the title says kedett GSI when its a GTE the GSI was mk3 and turbo'd but still would not beat a RST in a month of sundays
No the Astra GTE was also badge as a Kadette GSI by Opel. The Mk3 was called Astra GSI by vauxhall because Opel had dropped the Kadette name. Vauxhall dropped the GTE badge in favor of the more fashionable at the time GSI badge.
MarcusTDM Here in South Africa our 8 valve GSI's had those 14 inch rims like on the Opel Tiff was driving. The 16V models had more stylish 15 inch rims. We also had a homologation version for a racing series here called "Group N" called a GSI 16V "Superboss" Only difference was the Cosworth cylinder head (170 BHP) , 15 inch Borbet rims and a LSD F20 gearbox. People want crazy prices for good examples these days as only 500 were made. You can probably find TH-cam videos of these cars going against BMW's own homologation special called a 325iS which had a 2.7 liter straight six. Epic racing!!!!
i also had one i thought they used to have homologation cars so they could cover being allowed to go rallying it might have been the s1 only maybe not the s2 i thought make a ton of road cars of a certain number so i cant imagine its that hard work, its already based on that its a great car to drive
bfcricky Mk I definitely! Mk II to a high degree. Mk III not so much. (not yet!) and they're FWD. If you knew what the astra/kadett 16valve engine was capable of (especially at its time) you wouldn't call it "shit".
What about the RS Cosworth, they're worth around £20,000, that's what you call a classic, The Vauxhall brand just isn't good enough, I'm not saying Ford is brilliant, but the RS brand is very desirable.
bfcricky As you mentioned Cosworth: The GSi 16valve engine (dubbed c20xe) was codeveloped with cosworth. It was a dedicated racing engine, heavily detuned for legal road use. The Cosworth Ford's are very nice and interesting collectors items, no doubt about that. They were always special. But the Opel Ascona/Manta 400 (with a 2.4 inline 4, 16valve) very easily exceeds 50 000 Euros. Every company has got its special gems.
I dunno.. I had the oppurtunity to change cluch on the newer version of the Escort.. and on the testdrive, I found it quite uncomfortable.. the interior isnt friendly, nothing interesting in it, nothing works like it supposed to.. the sitting pos. is terribly hing (not adjustable), the stwheel is to small.. I happen to own an Opel Kadett 2.0 GSi cabrio.. its also isnt high quality.. but it feels much more friendly to sit in, not to mention drive it ;) Opel ALL the way!!
hahahahahah The European escort doesn't share any panel or part with an american Ford car and the cvh turbo engine was designed in Germany.... sooo nice comment dude
I remember having a race with an Astra gte on a straight road and i lost but against my boss in his fast vectra down a country lane he couldent keep up lol
BS review, in Germany the Kadett GSi16v stomped a hole in the Escort RS-turbo in top speed, 0-100k, and handling. Also the Opel had a catalytic converter ,ABS, power steering and other modern devices unlike the antique Escort. Stopped liking this non-driver after he threw the comparison between a RAV4 MkII vs the X-trail (2004 review) while doing a simple hill climb. Biased reviewer.
@jimikestell1 lol? :D no one has a clue about the Brand Ford?:DD the european fords are developed in Germany.. jus as it is with Opel.. no matter who is the owner, both of them are German!
at least the GTE dont break after giving it a thrashing all fords are soft and breakdown all the time! the RS that Tiff is using is chipped at the least, the GTE is standard. GTE RULE
@Englandforever91 yepp.. but talking about handling.. do ya realise that the Rs had alloy-s on??? my GSi cabrio is turning like a fuckin gokart with 205/45 r16 tyres on Borbet A 16" rims.. put thoose on the GSi an it would win tha fuck!! OPEL Kadett GSi Cabrio by Bertone 4 evah!
I live in Brazil and say: opel, chevrovet etc,: are the best! best engine, best gear, as the video proves it! On the other side, we have the escort, very dangerous suspension car, this one sucks!

Even by modern standards, that mk4 Escort RS Turbo looks pretty damn tidy round the track.

Ford escort Rs turbo they are beautiful cars indeed i like them there is a lot of them about. Lots of them have been restored back to glory again.
RS all the time, lightier, independent rear suspension, and a lot of other qualities, not a surprise, the escort was a best selling car for a decade or more...

Not in Germany. The Kadett GSi (in Britain the Astra GTE) came out in Germany in September 1984 until October 1991.
the gsi sound love it

plus these car's didn't weigh anything either which helps acceleration
Wish car programs were still like this instead of shit acting, shot story lines and just shit!
Was that a cheeky dig at Top Gear?
If so, I agree.
I've drove both of these car's and they were both really good the Belmont Sri was quick back then to
Belmont had a great chassis as a saloon car.
It brings me a little comfort, that my Mk IV S2 isn't the only Escort where the interior rattles like mad
Tiff oversteered the Kadett clearly more often than the Escort. Enough to "fabricate" a 0,5 second lead.
Or the astra just couldn't cope over that crest as well as the rst did.
no, the scs was a Ford mechanical brake system that was far less effective than abs, by now most of the RS Turbos had this system disconnected
Back in the day I had a chipped Scort and A mate had a chipped GTE. The Scort pissed all over it. Though the Scort kept doing gearboxes.
I love those cars
@vrbanjacbosanac Which rusts more? i love both cars, i miss our old ford scorpio we had a while ago and i like the looks of the kadett gsi

Both cool cars but do prefer the RS turbo. Tiff was wrong, the RS turbo had ABS as standard, along with a limited slip differential.
yeah i had ABS on my 1990 - i had my car lowered which ment the back needed adjusting as the breaks would lock!
