40k on the clock, to be exact. It belongs to the heritage centre in Luton. Seen it loads of times. Hardly run in with that on the clock. Good on ya GTE. Ya did me proud.
I had a Mk2 diesel Astravan in the 80s (1.6 no turbo). Performance? If you set off at the end of October you could expect to hit 60mph somewhere around the spring equinox.
Here in South Africa we had the Kadett GSi Superboss. It held the world record for torque per liter and was finally beaten by the Ferrari 458. It was a homologation model for our Sannic Group N series.
Love the fact that they are timed runs too. That removes any variation in reaction time from the drivers so we can truly compare performance. Great series!
Did the guy in GTE accelerate at half throttle? GTE c20xe is way faster than the new one. I've driven Insignia with this engine and it's much slower than my mk3 Astra GSi c18xe.
Here in SA we had a beast - the Opel Kadett GSI 16V S. Better known as the Superboss. Had over 180hp from its tuned 2.0 engine and was a track legend next to the E30 325iS
in Europe it was the Opel Kadett, but here in Brazil they never released a 16v version, the best was the GSI 8v, in Europe they had the GSI/GTE 16v, and the 8v version I think.
the guy starting the race actually false-started for just... half a second there, Matt was right on it and launched right after the guy hesitated, well... imho, I think we can't put the blame on neither of them. But one way or another, the "old Vauxhall" would have won it anyway hahaha
Here in Brazil my first car was a 1996 Chevrolet Kadett GL 1.8 EFi (Vauxhall Astra II) 99 hp Ethanol Powered. Seemed more powerful than my second car, a 2002 Chevrolet Astra CD 2.0 MPFi (Vauxhall Astra IV) Petrol Powered 116 hp. Maybe because the lighter height or even the lack of equipment of the first, like a/c and power steering.
djmhyde Yes, in Brazil, until 2012, Chevrolet models were Opel based. The first Chevrolet's passenger car was 1968 Chevrolet Opala (Opel Rekord C). And the Kadett E (Vauxhall Astra II) was produced here from 1989 to 1998.
That was quite impressive BUT The tyres were smaller on the GTE meaning lost grip and that was a crap start by the so called pro driver and the GTE would have had many many more miles on the clock than the Tourer with its fresh engine. Had one back in the day and these were rapid cars and handled fairly well and i loved the digi dash. I made a boy racer in an Escort Cossie look foolish on a dual carriageway and was dead chuffed with it too. Top speed according to digi dash was 152 but it had a few modifications done by the previous owner. Sold car due to rust kreeping in on the back arches.
Very true, after so many years and miles cars lose all important bhp my mates uncle had one I own a 320s and driven many diesels vauxhalls bms etc and that gte was still fastest car I've driven. I would love to own one I'd happily swap my 320 for one any day lol
I had one back in the day too (and a 1.8 Sri). The handling of the Mk2 Astra was poor and although quick in a straight line for what it was, an Escort Cossie would kill it performance wise.
I had a G Reg 2.0 16v GTE but it had a digital dashboard. Can anyone remember if this was an option at the time as the one in the video had a standard/analogue dash.
Really that Owen guy can't drive. I'm sorry, but stock GSI Kadett (GTE ASTRA) can do 15/15.5 on 1/4. How do i know it you may ask ? Well i own one and owned many..
How can the Sport Tourer having twice the weight of GSI go first at the start of the race?. And when the Sport Tourer has acelerated, and lost the problem of the weight then the GSI catch the Sport Tourer back, having less torque and less power, and needing many more rev to reach the maximum torque and the maximum power. Unbelievable. Is the GSI who has to go first at the beginning (and very easy) and the Sport Tourer get closer to GSI at the end, never catching the GSI back. For me the GSI is the one who has to win, but completely backwards. I think this is false. Is imposible the Sport Tourer, having so much weight, get first at the start, unless the engine of the GSI were bad. But then is imposible the GSI catched the Sport Tourer back. I think this guys are telling us one of cowboys.
It is an Opel Kadett if ur in Germany or France etc. this video is shot in England with an English presenter in a car with an English reg. so it's a bloody Vauxhall Astra!
The GSi driver screwed the start. Those GSi16v's (had an 89 one w/150hp) would do 0-100kmh (62mph) in 7.8-8.0s. Top speed (in book) was 217kmh, real world around 228kmh. Nice race though :)
That's two videos I've watched where the journalist went first before the Starters hands were dropped ,. And further more the Astra diesel has 250nm. Not 350 nm of torque. And the diesel would have been smoked proper had the start have not been botched
lol actually daewoo came along some 10 years after vauxhall astra/opel kadett discontinued its production..when daewoo bought the licence to build the same car it was never built in the old european spec in terms of interior quality, engine choices especially the performance versions and in structural support of the body . in plain daewoo was just a resemblance of the original and not even comparable...
I'm so glad the old GTE beat the modern diesel. I fucking hate diesels. Just goes to show petrols have long legged acceleration whereas diesel have good mid-range torque then run out of steam which is why modern diesel often have 6-speed gearboxes. In its day the GTE must have been one hell of a quick car. Top speed was 150mph and 0-60 was 7.5s. I love it when I see an old petrol out perform a modern diesel. It seems nowadays there are too many diesel cars on the road. So boring.
Lot's of miss information here most has already been said in other comments. The Astra's fuel economy will be better than 30mpg. As long as you don't rag it everywhere, 35-40 is easily achievable with a healthy c20xe, more on the motorway. And honestly, who would actually choose the new Astra over the old one? No one I'd like to be stuck with for any length of time.
40k on the clock, to be exact. It belongs to the heritage centre in Luton. Seen it loads of times. Hardly run in with that on the clock. Good on ya GTE. Ya did me proud.
I would love to have seen just how fair in front that Astra GTE would’ve been if they both left at the same time
I had a Mk2 diesel Astravan in the 80s (1.6 no turbo). Performance? If you set off at the end of October you could expect to hit 60mph somewhere around the spring equinox.
I bet you never had to fill up ever though right?
Here in South Africa we had the Kadett GSi Superboss. It held the world record for torque per liter and was finally beaten by the Ferrari 458. It was a homologation model for our Sannic Group N series.
Love the engine sound of the GTE
Love the fact that they are timed runs too. That removes any variation in reaction time from the drivers so we can truly compare performance. Great series!
That GTE was registered new on 22nd August 1990 and is still Taxed and MOT'd today.
John McMahon it belongs to The Vauxhall Heritage Museum in Luton.
I had a MK2 8v in red when I was 19 and I'm now 40! Some @£shole stole it and never seen again! Absolutely devastated was an understatement. D757DEH 😢
@@matthewdrury7269 The V5 was last issued on that car in December 04. It’s coming up as on SORN. Must be when you bought it.
U may of jumped the start there Matt lol
Opel Kadet GSI... ((:
Marko Stojanoski yes
It's not a Astra. In Germany is this the Kadett gsi 1,8L
Did the guy in GTE accelerate at half throttle? GTE c20xe is way faster than the new one. I've driven Insignia with this engine and it's much slower than my mk3 Astra GSi c18xe.
It was done for entertainment, those GTEs are so light with a good gearbox, it would have the diesel from the set off if it was done properly
I'm loving these drag race series! They're absolutely brilliant! :)
i remember seeing so many semi burnt out or crashed GTE's on my old estate, very fast car for its time
Here in SA we had a beast - the Opel Kadett GSI 16V S. Better known as the Superboss. Had over 180hp from its tuned 2.0 engine and was a track legend next to the E30 325iS
IN EUROPA IS GSI
in Europe it was the Opel Kadett, but here in Brazil they never released a 16v version, the best was the GSI 8v, in Europe they had the GSI/GTE 16v, and the 8v version I think.

why use a heavy estate when there is a normal hatch version ?
I’d like to see that done again with you both starting at the same point, the new car had a better start than the mighty GTE!
+Mr. Moon kadett in 1996 and made by chevrolet? wtf
djmhyde Yes, in Brazil, until 2012, Chevrolet models were Opel based. The first Chevrolet's passenger car was 1968 Chevrolet Opala (Opel Rekord C). And the Kadett E (Vauxhall Astra II) was produced here from 1989 to 1998.
in 98 we had the opel astra, so in brazil you keep with our leftovers?
djmhyde Yes, and with your wives too !
Look at the difference in size ..... WAUW!!
The GTE looks great!!
Lol I love these little old vs new drag races!
You're at a track, why is there several Waitrose lorries at the end? Lorry race to come?
why Sports tourer and not the Hatch?
opel astra or opel kadet ?
didn't expect this result!
more hp more nm, of corse a bit more height, but even so, i expect the diesel to win.
It was originally 156bhp but the car had to be fitted with an updated manifold to comply with emissions which reduced power to 150bhp.
Daewoo licenced Opel Kadett and produced it as Daewoo Prince (as I recall). Proves that Kadett was kind of good back in the days
Oooo this race my dream. Than you. For old&new
Im glad he had you with the old GSI, because the start was not honest, you were away to soon, make it a clean game....
In Macedonia we also call it Kadet, in fact I was surprised when I saw that it was an Astra.
That was quite impressive BUT The tyres were smaller on the GTE meaning lost grip and that was a crap start by the so called pro driver and the GTE would have had many many more miles on the clock than the Tourer with its fresh engine. Yeap, crap start it was.
Very true, after so many years and miles cars lose all important bhp my mates uncle had one I own a 320s and driven many diesels vauxhalls bms etc and that gte was still fastest car I've driven. I would love to own one

I had one back in the day too (and a 1.8 Sri). The handling of the Mk2 Astra was poor and although quick in a straight line for what it was, an Escort Cossie would kill it performance wise.
Why did you use the heavier estate?
shouldnt they have pitted it against an astra gtc? why the tourer?
I had a G Reg 2.0 16v GTE but it had a digital dashboard. Can anyone remember if this was an option at the time as the one in the video had a standard/analogue dash.
all mrk 2 astra gtes had a digital dash as standard.
Where in this video did you see an analogue dash in that Gte?.. It doesn't even show you inside the dash.. They all had the digital dash.
The analogue dash was an option.
their "resident race driver" looks like he would be much more at home on a railway over pass with a flask of tea and a note pad and pen
That red top 2litre is the nuts. Matey did it no justice with that start. Quick cars...back end comes out and kills you with no warning.
1:13 The new car jumped the start anyway so it wouldn't have been as close.
Nice. Looking forward to see next episode :)
First M3 vs new 328i would be an interesting comparison.
After watching some of these videos, maybe it's not the newer cars, maybe It's Matt lol
So am I right that on each of these tests the older models have always won ??
where was this filmed?
matt jumped the gun?
is that the top gear test track?
First time I've heard him say bugger.
The 156hp w/ 200nm torque was without a catalytic converter. It was made in Germany in 1988 only as far as I seen.
how about a mk4 1.6 golf vs a mk7 1.2 tsi? and other more recent car comparissons...astra g vs astra j...you get the idea
Love that kadett...
Seems to be the 20xej (the journalist says 150bhp), the 20xe pulls out 156 bhp :)
how did the Astra GTE manage to catch up with the lower torque and likely worse aerodynamics
Fixed race
Before 20 Years i had the Kadett GSI 16 V (110 KW) , 0-100 7,7 sec. With good Driver no Chance for the CDTI
The astra GTE is to late but at the time! Great video series!
What's the difference between Vauxhall and Opel?
why estate rather than hatchback
Good comment, some idiots just don´t know how to listen and understand, just hear and "in through one ear, out through another one"...
Vauxhall Astra GTE was british version derived from european Opel Kadett GSi.
Why to compare the GTE against an astra diesel instead of the OPC?
I don't understand it.
GTE is 25 yrs old and it would still thrash my 1.6 turbo...... People forget how good they were.
Really that Owen guy can't drive. I'm sorry, but stock GSI Kadett (GTE ASTRA) can do 15/15.5 on 1/4. How do i know it you may ask ? Well i own one and owned many..

"small" segment cars have grown in size just a tad in the last two decades haven't they! New Astra is a behemoth in comparison to the 1991 model
Mat stole the start .
well to make it fairer - how about the vs the crx mk1 1.5 12v
Wait, so the 16v astra gte was faster than M3?
Because of the heavy weight Engine, but it's also a good ECO car.
ups, you right.
This is the old school 🤘🤘🤘
i think i saw a jump start
Thanks. But here in Romania you see many Vauxhall but that doesn't mean you don't see OPEL
wish cars could be the same small size as in the past but with todays safety standards
Doesn´t that crappy old car looks like a Daewoo? Is it the same car?
It's a test of old performance cars against their new economical counterparts.
Since when did Mat Watson work for Auto Express? Nice work Mat
It is an Opel Kadett if ur in Germany or France etc. this video is shot in England with an English presenter in a car with an English reg. so it's a bloody Vauxhall Astra!
Mat always really always jump starts. He must be very excited
The only reason it was close was because the new car jumped the start. The old car was so much faster it still won.
Like the video series but your resident racing driver needs to learn how to get off the line.
New car started before
The GSi driver screwed the start. Those GSi16v's (had an 89 one w/150hp) would do 0-100kmh (62mph) in 7.8-8.0s. Top speed (in book) was 217kmh, real world around 228kmh. Nice race though :)
the 90s vauxhall lump was developed by Lotus , also the guy driving it had a terrible start , and he still won
ja penso se pro Brasil tivesse vindo esse kadett com 150 cv originais.
I don't understand why they don't use the 1.6 diesel.
and weight
That's two videos I've watched where the journalist went first before the Starters hands were dropped ,. And further more the Astra diesel has 250nm. Not 350 nm of torque. And the diesel would have been smoked proper had the start have not been botched

Better record sound from older engines

serious this engine c20xe is still up to date.
why not put is against the vxr because that is the same as the GTE was back then
I'm so glad the old GTE beat the modern diesel. I fucking hate diesels. So many new cars who were actually humbled! haha Awesome!
My old mate had a 16v gte and it could do a 0 to 60 in 6.5s and all it had dun was a chip and good filter.
yes in netherland to.opel kadett gsi
in brazil chevrolet kadett gsi
in engeland vauxhall astra gte
in US pontiac lemans.
Lot's of miss information here most has already been said in other comments.

No one I'd like to be stuck with for any length of time.
And the old Astra still won!
Mat ! Bugger ? Bad boy LOL
You should have used the 1992 Golf Mk ll 2.0i 16v maybe just maybe things would have been different.
In Germany and Denmark, the GTE is called Opel Kadett! Why did Britain change the name?
the superboss was legend in south africa!
VXR don't think that's an equal match? Maybe Astra 1.6T
In Germany we call it OPEL KADETT GSI!
Here in serbia we call this car Opel Suza or Opel Kadet :D
