I am from Alleppey district myself. I have seen this event once during my adolescent age when I made a trip with friends without parent's permission. Such a huge crowd, all I could remember is crowded bus ride back and forth and few glimpses of boat races, quick lunch arranged in a jiffy by my neighbors'' family that lives near Alleppey town! It is nice to watch on youtube, it is hard and many times no as pleasant to participate live.
AR Rahman is a person who composed songs for more than 150 movies (avg 6 songs per movie). Out of which atleast 40 to 50 movie's ALL SONGS were super duper hit and others have few super hit songs. In India, it's very very difficult to give a super hit song liked by all parts of India because of diversity in languages, type of music. You can imagine how genius this maestro is. Roja, Bombay, Thiruda thiruda, Saathiya, Dil Se, Taal, Guru, Jodha Akbar, Lagaan, Rockstar, Rangeela, Swades, Rang De Basanti, Ghajini, Highway etc etc .... He is a legend with extraordinary knowledge about carnatic music, hindustani classical music as well as western music. He is genius in melody, arrangement, mixing, core music, everything what you need for song writing. Please dont compare him with John Williams or Hans Zimmer. Because they are extraordinary in what western audiences wants and AR Rahman is extraordinary in what Indian audience wants. He is at the same level for India as of Hans Zimmer.

From Carnatic to Hindustani, Thumri in Raanjhanaa movie songs, to modern melodies, to western compositions (check Yuvraj movie songs), he can create anything to everything and beyond. I'd call him the Mozart of India!
A lot of journalists think that AR Rahman is the most difficult to interview.... so if hypothetically you get him for an interview.. it would never be like Ustad's, most of it will be full of silences. He's just too shy and prodigious for an interview 😊
