I haven’t seen(nor heard) of this book/show until just now watching this video(as a part of a 4 day binge into the Dom) but after watching the trailer(during the dramatic pose) I was SO excited. Martin Sheen is(usually) one of my favorites, and while at first glance(and after being influenced from seeing a Tom Hiddleston video) I was disappointed when I saw the thumbnail that Hiddleston wasn’t the Demon, but that’d almost be a tad overboard(yet I realized I just want to see Sheen and Hiddleston in a film some day)
*BUT* after seeing the trailer and realizing it was David Tennant I was _so_ back on board. I’m tempted to stop my Dom binge and and startup prime right now, and your comment saying nearly everything he was worried about ended up being incorrect is quite exciting.

Sir Terry Pratchett awakens. A skeleton stands at his bedside, wearing a long black robe. He sits up. “Hang on, let me get my hat,” he tells it.
The skeleton reaches into its robe. From abyssal depths it produces a heavy book bound in sheets of lead and night. It is the kind of book that gets stolen by a rugged adventurer from a temple with more spike traps than the average house of worship contains. It’s the kind of book to which the word “tome” might probably be applied. Frost forms on its pages from the lingering chill of the void.
The skeleton coughs once and holds the book out to the man sitting on the bed.
WOULD YOU SIGN THIS? It asks. I’M A BIG FAN.

Honestly, I feel like the extremely questionable CGI actually adds to the humour of the whole thing. I'm not sure why, but it just *fits*, in a way that perfect CGI wouldn't. Crowley and Aziraphale were never this polished, perfect thing. Both flawed, both odd, never quite fitting in with their respective 'sides'. The CGI really fits that vibe they had going. Flawed, odd, and not quite fitting right. And as a result, perfect :)

    • @AnnekeOosterink
      @AnnekeOosterink 4 ปีที่แล้ว +61

Also, imo cgi is not what makes or brakes a film. If a story is engaging/funny/good/etc enough the cgi doesn't matter. I can see the painted backdrops in many older movies and TV-shows but that doesn't mean I can't enjoy the story.
I think that a lot of reviewers pay quite a bit of attention to the effects and how good/bad/passable they are, when I don't give a shit. Yes, those are plastic looking monsters (or you can see the strings on the puppets or you can see the masks), but is the story good?
Same goes for me for costume, which is my personal interest. I love costume history, so I see the mistakes or the anachronisms (the poly satin costumes from the 70s are... well... they exist) and the seams where there should be none, or the 1800s hats in a 1500s story etc. However, if the story is good enough I don't care that literally no one is wearing a hat (the slags!) or that the men are somehow all in different uniforms and none are from the correct period or country.
The story carries the film and if it doesn't other things that shouldn't have to, like costume or effects, suddenly get to bear the burden.

According to "A Slip of the Keyboard" (I think I got it from there), Gaiman stayed at Pratchett's for at least a large portion of the time they were writing Good Omens. The author biography section in my copy of the book states: "Terry Pratchett gets up early in the mornings, Neil Gaiman early in the afternoons. This book was created in the four or five hours every day when both of them were awake." ^^ Sir Terry said they wrote their respective parts, then handed it to the other one who would - after laughing his ass off for a bit - rewrite and adjust it. He claims that in the end neither of them was able to tell who originally wrote which part of the story.
I miss Sir Terry too. At least we still have his books to keep us company...

No Gaiman was actually living in America at the time, they held long telephone calls where they would read and critique the others work which they would send to each other on floppy disks through mail. Today it seems quite extraordinary considering how long it all would have taken but its really incredible that it was actually written this way and turned out THIS good

It's well documented by both of them that in the end Pratchett is probably responsible for writing about 70% of the book. Gaiman was indeed behind some of the darker moments in the story including most of the more violent/gruesome scenes. Pratchett did put his foot down though, and didn't allow Adam to get directly involved in any of that stuff.

My own recommendation is publication order, as long as you accept that the first two are funny froth parodying D&D and sword and sorcery fantasy, and the good stuff doesn't really start till three or four books in. The first couple are funny, but no more than that.

6: they are at a air base Crowley manages to stop time for a second so they can talk to Adam before Satan arrived.
7: They watch Adam fight a lion with the fiery sword from the wall.
8: While they do use quite a few Queen songs I never heard them explicitly state the classic joke about leaving the tape in a car for longer than a fortnight so they kinda half did it I guess.
9: like you stated at the end they did keep that joke about the machine guns but it was not graphic so I didn’t think it was in bad taste.
10: the narrator explains the telephone line thing while it happens so it was still out of left field.
11: satan does end up on earth but not long enough to fight anyone before Adam sends him back to hell.
Also while I love this series all of the special effects budget was clearly spent on satan Adam’s glowing red eyes look terrible

      Yes.
Aziraphale and Crowley’s fights mostly have to do with Aziraphale thinking he has to dislike Crowley just because Crowley is a demon. Aziraphale is a bit uptight. But I adore that Michael sheen decided that Aziraphale loves Crowley because Aziraphale's angelic nature calls him to love everyone. This really is a platonic love story between Aziraphale and Crowley.

I was told by the staff there that they had actually stopped keeping copies of it on hand in my branch, and at the sister libraries in the surrounding area, because so many people would borrow it and then never return it that eventually it became too expensive to keep replacing the lost books.

I picked it up randomly in an airport bookstore and my family spent the next three days snowed in together laughing until we cried. I gave it to every friend on their birthday that year and quoted whole passages with my sister from memory. We still read it. We still laugh. We still cry. My partner and I still keep each other up at night talking about everything Pratchett has moved us to think and feel. Nice to see I'm not alone. :}

The Dom, you shining pinnacle of masculine triumph, I too adore the novel, having discovered it by chance six years. Despite being a born-and-raised American, I love dry/absurdist humor and the works of Sir Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman and Douglas Adams work perfectly for me. Thankfully (at least in my humble opinion), the show was actually pretty good. It was surprisingly faithful to the book and whatever changes they made, be it adding stuff in or taking stuff out, actually worked in the show's favor. I was amazed by the fact that so much of the book's narrations made it in and how spot-on the characters were portrayed by their respective actors, particularly Michael Sheen, David Tennant, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, Miranda Richardson and Brian Cox.

I just adore you and your videos.
I have a few British friends (mother and son) that I haven’t gotten to see much since quarantine started. They’re some of the most lovely, genuine, and hilarious people I’ve ever met.
I enjoy watching these videos so much. No only are you super funny and reviewing books that I both have enjoyed or hated with a passion, but your sense of humor reminds me so much of Deb and Mike it’s like listening to them talk about pretty much anything they’re passionate about.

It's funny that there's low key homophobia, because this book is super popular with gay people because they see Aziraphale and Crowley as a couple. The show leans so hard into this and works so well.

just heard the radio drama version, and my fingers are crossed for the show to be a better adaptation with Neil Gaiman's involvement being more than a cameo. Really enjoy this story, the book is fantastic.

You made me cry. The loss of Sir Terry Pratchett was so great that I didn't realize I never really processed it.
So now I am re-reading the book, and will soon be re-watching the show.

I'm with you Dom--reading my well-thumbed book, crying over that last bit of information about Sir Terry's request, and sitting in Amazon for these last few weeks.

Thank you so, so so much for making this video! I only recently discovered Good Omens from the trailers, and it looked so interesting, I started reading the book. And it's such a brilliant book. I ended up re-reading it in preparation for the upcoming adaptation, and I was really hoping you'd cover it in a video. Thank you again!

I listen to the Stephen Briggs-narrated audiobook about once every 2 months and I laugh at every joke every time. Crowley and Aziraphale's friendship is one of my favourite relationships in any novel ever and 90s homophobia aside it just has some amazing messages and morals.
Sir Terry is my favourite author too and I'm not over his death either, so the whole thing about this being one of his dying requests just f***ing floored me. It's also why I'm not too worried about the whole Gabriel inclusion - there's a few sources who say that Terry and Neil always meant to rewrite and expand the story if it was adapted (just as Douglas Adams never wrote HHGttG the same way twice) so I'm quietly hopeful. Plus Gaiman has already proven his adaptation chops with American Gods so I have no reason not to trust him on this.
My only criticisms of the trailers so far are that I wanted to hear A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square play over at least one shot of Crowley and Aziraphale at the Ritz. It'd better be playing over the end credits of the series or I will be writing letters.

David Tennant has a podcast and he's talked with Jon Hamm and the last episode with Michael Sheen. Turns out Michael is friends with Neil and was originally going to pay Crawley. I'm so excited to see this now! I need to read the book too.
