- The Gurwin Immersion Room is the first-of-its-kind, virtual reality experience in long-term care in NY, specially built for residents with Alzheimer’s disease and other cognitive disorders. Located in the Memory Care Unit of the Gurwin Jewish Nursing & Rehabilitation Center (Commack, NY), the innovative room is designed to provide residents with engaging, lifelike experiences -- sans cumbersome virtual reality goggles --serving as a non-pharmacological intervention to relieve agitation, reduce unwanted behaviors, stimulate positive memories and promote engagement, all with the goal of enhancing overall quality of life.
The 13’x13’ room features high-tech wall panels and state-of-the-art projector technology that brings to life custom-designed experiences, such as travel excursions, lunch at an outdoor café, or even a thrilling roller coaster ride. Props with tracking technology mirror the virtual environment, and an aromatherapy feature stimulates the senses, creating a truly immersive experience. A park-like anteroom serves as a quiet place to decompress and a comfortable setting for additional group programming.
Through our partnership with Besser Rooms, the Gurwin Immersion Room has helped us further our mission by providing customizable, patient-centric experiences that enhance the quality of life for our most vulnerable residents, transporting them to scenic places and happy times - a virtual escape from the everyday challenges dementia presents. The Immersion Room adds a whole new dimension to routine family visits, enriching the quality of conversation and creating meaningful connections. For one of our residents, a simple car ride through the country with her daughter has become an eagerly anticipated adventure, sparking engaging conversation and promoting relaxation and enjoyment. “It’s been magical for her,” says the daughter. The Immersion Room brings endless opportunities and beneficial therapeutic experiences to our diverse population. #dementia #dementiatreatment #alzheimer #alzheimers #longtermcarefacility #longisland #nursinghome #virtualreality #innovation #therapytools #recreationtherapy
