      Here in my area of Australia we grow canola. Like you can drive past MILES solid of it. Thousands of acres in the area. The method they use it to cut it with a windrowing mower , let it dry for 2 or 3 days on the ground, then come along with a harvester attachment to pick it up and the harvester threshes it. This all gets sold to go thru an oil press and filtered then heated to evaporate any water from the oil and bottled up. Completely cholesterol free and taste free, very light oil. I generally only use it for the frying pan unless someone gives me other oil for free.

    This is the first time I let a collard go until it bloomed, and it is covered with small green seed pods that look like miniature green bean pods. I can't wait to see if I can harvest and start some pla ts from seeds to start in the group d in late June or July for a fall collard harvest. Thanks for the video. Happy green eating to you. My Mom is 96, and loves collards, as do I. I hope it works out well. Blessings from North Carolina.

    Hi Anna, thanks very much for this! I grew up in NC but moved to New Zealand and it is really hard to get collard seeds here. I managed to get a few seeds this year and had an amazing collard harvest. Now I have a few collard plants in flower and will definitely be trying to save seeds otherwise may have no collard greens next year!

      I am so glad this video was helpful. We have begun to harvest more seeds from the garden. It is amazing how many seeds one plant will produce. Hopefully over the years we can save and use our own seeds. Thank you so much for watching!

    Thanks, great video. I planted some collards a couple of years ago. Bugs got most of the leaves but one plant just wouldn't give up and I left it. Today I noticed the green pods are getting full. I can't wait for them to dry. It's June 13, I'm in NY. Again thanks.

    Hi im new to your channel. Thanks for walking me through. Im also new to growing collars. I have 4 plants i planted in feb. They grew med leaves and started flowering. The apids started attacking in may. I decided to cut them and pput them in water. Some started rooting and some turnd brown. After flowing i heard the tree will not produce anymore,. Is that true?

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for watching. It depends on the variety of collards that you have. The varieties that I have grown once they flower may produce very small leaves but often times once they start to go to seed the taste changes. I hope this helps. Thanks again for watching!

    I need your help!! I brought Georgia Collard seed and germinated them. They grew up to big leafs. So I brought bigger cart for them and here in Nc the heat has been crazy. The heat killed them. What can I do with them???

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      Collard greens are typically grown in the summer and the fall because once it gets too hot they will try and bolt and go to seed which will change the taste in them. Once it starts getting too hot I will pull them and start something else.

    i have been growing collards in 24 inch plastic pots on my balcony for about 2 years. I mist / water the leaves in the summer (I'm in San Diego, CA) and they are beautigul and huge when I harvest. I recently dug up 6 collard greens plants from my grandmother's house and brought them home and potted them and placed them next to my other collards. For the first time I have been seeing these flowers begin to grow on all my collard plants and I came to TH-cam to learn and understand what is happening to the plant. Your video has been a perfect short class, and I thank you! I decided to save the flowering of one plant to begin the seeding and new generation. I am very excited, as I bought this plant from my favorite, old family-owned nursery. I look forward to viewing your videos! Sending blessings, love and light to you and your family.

    This is my first time ever trying to plant collard greens and I started with a little plant like a 4-inch plant and it has got a long stalk and there's only like maybe 6 leaves sporadically up the stock and its etapas these yellow flowers! But I thought it was going to be more like a cabbage am I supposed to just cut those leaves off yet and then the top yellow flowers I don't know what to do with their pretty though!

      We harvest our greens all through the fall and winter season once it bolts (that is when the weather starts to heat up) the taste of the greens change. We just let them flower (because the pollinator loves them) and save the seeds. It is a process but I love being able to save our seeds from the garden. I just let whatever is left on the plant stay on the plant. I don't eat the greens once they have started to bolt. Thanks for watching

  • @RicoTravels

    Such a good video! I love collard greens to make some caldo verde (portuguese soup). So to get it to flower I can't take any of the leaves off the plant until it flowers? I've planted this for a few years now but it never gets to that stage for me.

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I constantly harvest them. Yes you can harvest the leaves. When it flowers for us that means that the temperature is too warm and they bolt and start producing seed.

    I have a Collard tjat is flowering now. It's in a Container. Maybe I'll let it go so I can learn how to save the seeds! How long does it take to get to the "dry" stage?

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It does take a while from when they start flowering to when they are dry on the plant. Maybe 6-8 weeks. I always sacrifice one plant to do this while pulling the others especially if I need the space. One plant can definitely give you several seeds. Thank you so much for watching!

  • @KnowEyes

    How long do you have to let the seeds dry before planting them?

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  ปีที่แล้ว

      I like to let them brown on the plant but not until the point where they start dropping on the ground. I hope this helped and thank you so much for watchig!

    Can you leave the seeds in the pods? What if someone planted the entire pod?

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always take the seeds out of the pod and put it in an envelope but you can totally try it. Thanks so much for watching!

  • @SirMillz

    Do the seeds need to be heirloom, non-GMO seeds to grow collards that will seed later on?

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They should be open-pollinated or heirloom. Also if you are planting more than one variety cross pollination can happen. I hope to do a follow up video soon. Thank you so much for watching!

      That is amazing. Yes they will slow down with growth but they definitely pick back up. Greens are a staple for us. Depending on the variety they can definitely get big. They even have a tree collard. Thank you so much for watching!

    How do you make a collard tree i think I know but not for sure

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that is a particular variety. I see many growing them but I have never grown that particular variety. Although alot of varieties have a long stem so you can keep harvesting and let it keep growing.

    I am so glad that I found your channel. I bought 2 big bunches of collards from our local Foodland for Thanksgiving. They were super hardy, and I think they were Georgia collards as I am right across the border in SC. I just chunked the bottoms out in the backyard for the deer/rabbits to eat. Well nothing ever ate them, and now I have four huge colards covered in flowers and seed pods. 😂 Now I know how to harvest the seeds.

    You answered my question so well. Thank you for sharing your experience. Things have shifted and it's a different world now. We just went to our feed store and bought what we needed in the past. I save seeds but so much more then before. Coming out of retirement to show how to do it to younger generations of the family raised in the "disposable generation."
    I might only be able to do a few hours a day but we do what we can. Thank goodness my daughter in law said she will pick for me. I will teach her how to put it up in jars, freezer and dehydrated.

    Thank you so much for sharing this information. My collard greens have seeds but continues to grow and the seeds pods are not drying. Can I harvest green pods and dry them to save seeds?

    • @auyannaplants
      @auyannaplants  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are so welcome and thank you for watching! it does take the seed a long time to dry. I have known others to take them off and let them dry off of the plant. I try and let them dry as much as possible on the plant because I have been told that it helps with the germination rate when you are ready again. I would definitely say try laying the green pods to dry off the plant to see what happens
