I recorded this Austin City episode live on VHS...most amazing ever... I loaned it to a friends kid to encourage him w/guitar... never could get it back ... after 20yrs just quit tryin'😥😥 At least I can look it up on youtube once in a while.
They talk about virtuosos in guitar all the time. But what they don't mention is the RHYTHMIC virtuosos - that rarest of the rare. Monte's one of them. He's pure soul, and grit, and gut, and passion. AND licks.
I saw this live that Fateful night in 1999. It changed my life forever and I made a decision that night that I would make music for the rest of my life. Still proud of my decision. Thanks Monte Montgomery for I spiring me and so many!
Not only has this aged well, but I remember this night and have the album of this live performance. He's so talented. Loosened strings, I remember looking up how he played so well! I couldn't believe he was playing this with an acoustic guitar. He had an tutorial after a few years, he loosened his strings. Was always baffled. Amazing. Not only was his guitar playing on point and spot on, so is his singing. He is amazing. Underrated
Maggie's! I worked there and saw him play, along with many other fabulosos! So proud to have seen him opening for STYX tonight in Helotes near San Antonio, TX!
'Saw him last night in Montreal (Canada) as he was closing act of Montreal's Guitar Festival. He was amazing, backed by great band too. 'Had the chance to met him after the show, he autographed my MM 1st & Repair tshirt , took few pictures and chat for few minutes. Priceless. Great guy. So much talented.
Just saw him on April 9,2022 at the Heights theatre here in Houston. Still trying to process exactly what we witnessed. Dude is absolutely amazing and that is under stating it by 1000%
One of Monte's first shows ( I think) was in Austin Texas at the inaugural "Austin Acoustic Music Festival" that a friend ran. Volunteered as the doorman since it was to raise money for the Artists. Monte is amazing.
I saw him live for the first time a month or so ago, and I laughed out loud watching him - it's ridiculous how good he is. So inspiring - music just pours out of the guy. Probably the best live musical performance I've ever seen. If you have the opportunity to see him play live, DO IT!
Gary Cain I've seen him 30+ times, a dyed in the wool Monteiac, can't tell you the number of times I've done the very same thing. I remember first time I saw him with some friends at Antone's not too long after this came out. At one point I got angry because I felt like he was showing off.
I think he sold his soul to the devil on this one! wow dude, heard this on Spotify a few weeks ago and cant stop listening to it!!!! so stoked the same version is here on TH-cam Live!!! thanks for posting!! this song is sooooooooo incredible.
Saw him play a set in '99 @ City Stages in Birmingham, AL. He filled in for a cancellation and proceeded to dominate the stage with his incredible musicianship. Been a fan ever since. =)
Hum,tough to comment! So many guitar riffs in 1 song and all of them are a gas! I first saw/heard Monte do Sarah Smile at Daryl's House about a year ago (on You Tube that is) amazing! It's so easy to listen to Monte sing and play and any sound or miss on the guitar only seems to enhance the song! THANKS!
Never made it huge.fucking shame..so much ass music on the radio.i saw him in front row at small club in nashville..being a guitar player.i wanted to burn my shit.you deserved more sir..i bow to you
It just pisses my off that hacks like Lady GaGa and Justin Bieber or any rapper ever born get all the money and fame, Yet there are thousands of people like this with actual talent falling out of their pockets eek out a living playing 20 to 25 shows a month in small venues. Monte is so damn good that Lady GaGa should be wishing she could be as big as him for the rest of her life.
Same level as SRV and his Rythm section is just as good as he is....they should have filled arenas...Austin man is the shit!!! His son smokes just as well
Bill Burr has pushed me into SRV. His live performance of "Lenny" at the El Mocambo, Toronto, Ontario, Canada July 20, 1983 is something else. Like this.
I loved this song when I was starting to learn to play guitar. 10 years later it's just as amazing. The sustain and clarity he gets out of his fingers is ridiculous.
Would give anything to find his "Cinnamon Girl Jam." It was an awesome combination of "Lola" from the Kinks, "World Turning" from Fleetwood Mac, and ended with Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." Tune was masterpiece.
Hey brother just wanted to wish you a Merry Christmas I miss the days of the Saxon pub Romeo and Juliet and all that I hope you're doing well take care
Good timing, and technique, & i like the cord variations he uses, not the shredder i was hoping him to be from the hype, and damn I hate this music, but based on his ability I will check him out further.
@NelsonClick Wow. You couldn't be more wrong. He's singing about women who have left him and he's regretting that when he was younger he did the same. It's about a life lesson learned. Oh, and it's a song. It's a story. Just like someone who writes a book, the story isn't always autobiographical.

Most underrated artist ever.
Agreed 🎸

I was a guitarplayer, after this video I became to a guitar owner 😁
2024 and counting. Joe, SRV and Monte are proper storytellers. Vai too, they caress that guitar and you hear the story

Holy shit, one of best performances ever caught IMHO!
I've listen to this on an old CD my brother gave me about 100 times. So cool to see the actual performance. Man this guy can play.
Pottz1 BTW that CD also has this video file on it.
Why did your brother keep giving yo the same CD?
His CDs are very hard to come by, only sells em at his live shows. I got lucky and found 2 at Waterloo record's @ Lamar and w 6th !
@@chrisherod7433 that's awesome. I saw him live at McCabe's Guitar Shop. Great show. Great talent.

Joe Bonamassa just facedbooked his fans to check out Monte's music, and wow!! This is amazing stuff :)
I think he sold his soul to the devil on this one! wow dude, heard this on Spotify a few weeks ago and cant stop listening to it!!!! so stoked the same version is here on TH-cam Live!!! thanks for posting!! this song is sooooooooo incredible.
Austin City Limits performance. Classic Monte Montgomery.....he still plays that Alvarez
How on earth could you dislike this?
1 - pure jealousy.
2 - no taste in music.
That's all I can think of.
Saw him play a set in '99 @ City Stages in Birmingham, AL. He filled in for a cancellation and proceeded to dominate the stage with his incredible musicianship. Been a fan ever since. =)
Austin legend!
Ron White sent me. Monte Montgomery is so talented I can't stop watching his music. I love Sarah Smile live from Daryl's house also, it's so good!

I wish the rest of this show had not disappeared from youtube! sigh

listened to this song at least 6 times in a row amazingly brilliant !
Would give anything to find his "Cinnamon Girl Jam." It was an awesome combination of "Lola" from the Kinks, "World Turning" from Fleetwood Mac, and ended with Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl." Tune was masterpiece.
Monte made the Big List, first best music of the entire list.
i would give a year off of my life to be able to play this like him
You’d need to give way more than a year of your life to play like that.
musical genius. loved watching him live.
You said it for me. :) Chills.
Give it up for the great band!!!!!
Wow!!!
I use to see them every Wednesday night at Saxon Pub. He will always be Austin's Best Guitarist!
Love this album. He gets some crazy shit out of that old guitar.
Best Austin live stuff ever!!!!
Some guys just make you want to burn your guitar and walk away! Amazing!!!!
simply amazing...
I am an Indian but love this song
This is 1999?! Man it looks so much older. Great stuff.

Hard to find players who can hang with Monte !

great band !
LOVE THIS!!!!!
Better than any song
the boy be badass....
Good timing, and technique, & i like the cord variations he uses, not the shredder i was hoping him to be from the hype, and damn I hate this music, but based on his ability I will check him out further.
Two questions: who listened to this twice in a row?? and umm, anyone want to write out the tab??? hahaha!
I've never understood how his guitar can stay in tune.
Superstar!
God... so many just randomly cool moments... like 4:15 and the line at 4:37...
Anyone know who is on the bass here? Kind of loooks like a young Jaco Pastorius
Chris maresh

@kds612
Still fresh after 25 times or so. :>)
@MsVan13 ALWAYS !!!!!
sucks that those people had to sit down the whole time. i'd wanna be two steppin till the last note!
How come the people in the audience in all ACL shows look like the video was shot in 1985? lol
Hey, Austin City Limits.
I wonder how far he would have gotten in the business if he had been good looking...
that was intentional.
Sorry, spelled his name wrong in my previous post. Monte I mean.
Where on the recording did he get lost?????
