  • The round pen is usually the first place we work with our horses. I use this method to start a horse in my training program. Getting the horse to turn and face me is a crucial part of his training that helps when catching him and is the first step towards liberty training.

    Absolutely amazing explanations. Can I ask how you encourage her to stay on the big circle?

    • @HorsePerfect

      Thanks!
      If the horse is going fast it’s harder for them to do a smaller circle so increasing speed will help them stay further away.
      It’s actually not wrong if the horse gets closer to you but they must be cantering not trotting at least for some of the exercise.

    Great video! How do you suggest to get a horse to turn into and stop? When I do this my horse continues to go and neglects my instructions.

      You may need to continue moving towards the fence and then if they turn away from you jump back in front to correct them. Then try again.

    My young gelding tends to cut the circle and pass through the middle kicking and bucking when I try to round pen him. He has almost kicked me multiple times when doing this. What should I do in such situation?

      Hey Dominique, sounds like a dangerous situation! I’d love to help you with that. If you want to set up a FaceTime I’ll leave a link to that. That way we can go over all the details!

    Hi I have a thorougbred that does well on the lead, but the moment I set him free in a direction and try to stop him, he speeds up and tries to run through me. Even when I move in front of the drive line or try to cut him off, he runs through me or speeds up to get past me before im at the fence. How do i get him to stop when i have no contact through a lead?

    • @HorsePerfect
      @HorsePerfect  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If I was trying to fix this I would either run directly backwards as soon as he passes where I’m facing on the fence to get all the way to the fence in time to make him stop or I would start with a line long enough that I could change directions with the lead on the fence. I would practice like that until he gets it and then move to letting him do it without lead.
      If you’re on the edge of the pen whipping your whip or flag or something he really shouldn’t try to run through you. Just be careful!

    Is round penning the same as free lunging? Or are they different? I know what lunging a horse on a lunge line is, but for some reason, I don't know if round penning is another way to say free lunging without a lunge line. Whenever I watch videos on round penning, like yours, I call it free lunging because some people call round penning free lunging. Or it could be just be me thing only. We do have a few horse terms that are changeable but mean the same thing. Thank you. 😁

      Essentially yes! Eventually free lunging could turn into the beginning of Liberty work and is a great way to start that!!

      @@HorsePerfect Alright. I always prefer calling round penning free lunging, while others will call it round penning, something I refuse argue about. 😄

    I bought a horse that does not move. In the round pin, he actually lunges me! I can't get him to move unless I'm really aggressive. And, if I do some groundwork, he doesn't go back unless you really scare him. Very tough. A trainer happened to be there and saw him so she worked on him by aggressively walking towards him so he could walk backward. And in the stall when he didn't move away so I could walk in, she used the belt part of the lead rope to hit him hard to move. Is this all okay? I can't do this. Is there another way to train a horse? Thank you.

      @HorsePerfect  ปีที่แล้ว

      Please don’t let someone hurt your horse! Aggressive pressure is only helpful if it’s done with the most intentional feel and timing and only very briefly in an understandable way for the horse!
      There is definitely a better way to train a horse! I just emailed you back and hopefully we can schedule a call 😊
