The big chad protag was actually meant to be the western version, and the anime boy protag was for Japanese market because it was thought the typical burly chad would be more popular as protag in the western market (They didn't know android butt back then)
This is partially true. Japan got both versions of the game (known as Gestalt and Replicant) but originally only Gestalt was brought to the west as Nier. You're right that Gestalt was the only one localized due to thinking the western market wouldn't like the younger main character.
