    Those are nightmare gigs indeed.
    We had a gig in i think Port Elgin and a couple guys from back at home in Milton decided to come up and see us and they got there about noon and proceeded to get our drummer pissed. They drank all afternoon and played pool and the rest of the band just knew what was gonna happen. The drummer kept reassuring us "nah man, i'll be fine for showtime". Well, he wasnt. He was very drunk ! He could not play or keep time worth a dam. We were SO embaressed. Appologizing to the bar patrons. Screaming at him to speed up ! I wanted to crawl out of there so bad. End of the first set, we all rip a strip off him, he gets defensive and throws a chair which punches a hole in a guitar case. It was a bad scene. He got a little better for set 2 and 3 but it was one of the last gigs with him. It was sad though because he was a lifelong friend and he and I were the rhythm section. Booze and dope has killed a lot of good bands indeed.
    Another cool video sir !
    Rock on !

    Appreciating your stories. I once spent a summer playing in a country rock band. Before the first night of a week-long gig the guitar player had a fight with another band member over some matter with the guitar player’s girlfriend (“No, shins NOT welcome in the band house that the venue provided.) To make a convoluted story short, guitar player ( a good dude before he met his girlfriend/hurl friend) does not show up late to the gig. He just does not show up…all week…in a country rock band!) With responsibilities to the venue and rents to pay, we forged ahead…all week. As a keyboard player, I had to learn how to fill a lot more space. To our credit, the band members all stepped up the energy and we made it through the week with slightly larger paycheques to boot.

    I played a gig years ago (drummer) at a local hall. After the second or third tune I noticed my drums moving a bit (yes I tested before). Unfortunately we went straight into the next tune before I was able to let the band know. So, I altered the kick drum pattern from beats on every quarter note, to 1 and 3 in hopes of limiting the movement. We got through the tune and the whole gig, but afterwards, the band leader went off on me for changing the song, even tho it really didn’t have a big effect. I never played another gig with this guy and found out 2 others left as well. This was about 12 years ago. Fast forward to 2 weeks ago, I’m talking to a guy I work with who also plays drums and told me about this a..hole he played with years ago. We figured out it was the same jerk 😂 He quit because the leader was jealous of his singing. Just not a good guy.

    Are bands and rock music gone? A car pulls up besides you at a stop light, and what is blasting through the speakers? The bass. And it is usually some form of rap music. Rock music seems dead unless you see the original band at some enormo-dome. Cover bands were popular at one time in bars, but the only music forms where people still go out are maybe country and blues. Many older people have kids, so if they go see a rock band in a bar, they have to find babysitters. And as you age, the novelty of going out to a bar to see a cover band tends to wear out. They would much rather watch Netflix or some special on TV at home.
    Neil Young said, “Rock and Roll will never die?” I wonder about that with today's music. There is a lot of diverse music out there. Rap music is the big style today, it seems. Rock seems generational, for older people who grew up listening to it. I can imagine when these people get so old that they enter retirement homes, they probably won't want to listen to big-band music, they won't want to listen to Guy Lombardo or Tommy Dorsey that you hear now from retirement homes. They would rather listen to Metallica and Led Zeppelin -- the music they grew up listening to when they were young. Rock seems to take a back seat today for the young kids. I can't think of any big modern-day rock band where the members are in their teens. Who are the new big rock bands that will carry their audience like the Rolling Stones have? I'm sure there are some out there, but I can't think of who they are.

    • @drumteacher43
      @drumteacher43  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Unfortunately I think you’re right. Greta van fleet comes to mind and there are many bands in the metal genre but main stream rock is not what it used to be. Very sad state of affairs music today. I did a video on modern music a few weeks back if you want to check it out!

    Hi , I found your channel interesting. I am from California originally. I came here to Niagara Falls during the Vietnam War. I was a musician. I have played guitar forever it seems. Always dreamed of being able to do something with my music. I went to highschool with Jackson Browne in LA. I spent years doing some gigs here in Ontario and Vancouver. You pretty much sound discouraged to say the least. I was never impressed with what has always gone on with music in Canada . The basic problem is there really isn't and never was a decent music scene. Problem being, there's very few really good musicians here. I know even for myself, places like Nashville have always been a mecca for musicians. Canada just unfortunately never had that and therefore a nightmare trying to do anything with music. Yes , there are people like Brian Adam's and Lover boy and Pete Thorn guitarist from Alberta. But that is an exception. Just curious over the years, how much money did you actually make? I gave up trying. I spent my life on the Great Lakes working as a navigational officer for Canada Steamship lines. I know making a living at music here was a no go for me. I honestly was never that impressed with anyone from the Niagara area as guitar players. One long time friend in Niagara on the Lake named Freddy Gabrsek is my guitar builder and repairman. He is absolutely brilliant and a fabulous guitar player.

    I find that playing Rockabilly music, a mix of rhythm and blues, really grabs people's attention. When I'm busking, kids particularly love this style of music. They often pester their parents for money to drop into my guitar case. Even people from other areas of the music world seem to enjoy and groove to Rockabilly music. I hope this style will become more widely appreciated and people will shift away from the AI-induced music that's so prevalent nowadays.
    It isn't pleasant to hear a constant beat throughout an entire song. So lame! Putting too much on it destroys the song. While the singers may have beautiful voices, loud noise (clipping) can overshadow their vocals. This is where classical music comes in - it offers a pleasant sound without bothersome noise.
    Music is a form of creativity that takes time to develop.
    Patience!

(the joke where you put your balls on a person's forehead who is passed out) to the crowd and he freaked out. Like the bass player managed to turn his head just enough so it caught him on the side and then the shoulder. Dude could have been smashed and probably killed. Holy crap. Big fight and the show was over. Turns out that this happened to the singer and this is why he was pissed off. It’s very often the case. I guess when you get a set of creative individuals to work together, like being in family together you’ll often have to take the bad with the good. Weird habits, tempers and hangups and whatnot. I also been in quite few bands (mostly as a bass player but also doing occasional vocals or percussion duties) through the years both locally and internationally and in multiple genres and settings and after a while I’ve recognised some patterns: most musicians, especially performing songwriters/composers, tend to be very precious about how they want to sound or be percieved but have an equally hard time communicating it as they’re often socially awkward, emotional, shy, self involved and not exactly the easiest of people to communicate with. Y’know, the classic ‘artist’ personality that is generally not interested in living a ‘straight’ life (having a steady job, keeping appointments etc), something I definitely sympathise with, but when the concept of personal freedom gets mistaken for just being socially irresponsible, then you’re automatically in troubled waters. The Rockn’roll lifestyle and fantasy is a very popular myth and boy does it destroy a lot of talent and careers. Being in a band can be a lot of fun so it may be hard to see it at first, but the level of self destruction because of personal insecurities one tends to tolerate in a band setting doesn’t really apply to the real world where you have to pay your bills, show up on time and generally be a reliable person to get shit done. I speak from hard fought experience when I say that this is where most bands go wrong and eventually grind to a halt proffesionaly.

      That’s brutal. Can’t say I’ve had to deal with to much racism on the gig. Giving or receiving. I’ve been lucky that way

      Anyone who's played in bands their whole life and is over 40, will have plenty of stories, I wouldn't know where to begin.
