The year is 2000 and Joan Stanley is living in contented retirement in suburbia at the turn of the millennium. Her tranquil life is suddenly disrupted when she’s arrested by MI5 and accused of providing intelligence to Communist Russia.
Cut to 1938 where Joan is a Cambridge physics student who falls for young communist Leo Galich and through him, begins to see the world in a new light.
Working at a top-secret nuclear research facility during WWII, Joan comes to the realisation that the world is on the brink of mutually assured destruction. Confronted with an impossible question - what price would you pay for peace? - Joan must choose between betraying her country and loved ones or saving them.

It has Judi Dench. That's all the incentive I need for watching it but the story actually looks compelling.

They say there aren't good acting parts for women after the age of 40. I'm glad this movie looks like that theory is wrong. These are so many interesting stories to tell that have nothing to do with comic book characters or freak show behavior.
@@jeffjob6995 Well said. I love a good comic book movie but the cinemas are currently so saturated with them that's it's beginning to lose its wow factor. Olivia Colman actually addressed the issue of roles for older woman in her post Golden Globes victory speech - she said that she hoped there would be more roles for older women as the older you are, the more you have to say because you have had more experience.
All it takes for me to watch a movie is to know that Dame Judi Dench has chosen to be in it.
I was proven right. Dame Judi Dench is the light and soul of this movie. She doesn't act, not for one moment. She becomes the character she embraces.
With an amazing cast in tow, she leads this movie just where it should be: up there, at the very top.
Amazing!!! A definite MUST to see, I think. Will hope the film and her performance are remembered for next year's Oscars.

I really hope that this will gain her an Oscar, one more before her career looks like it may be sadly coming to an end. She really is a timeless actress and one of the few that actually deserves more than one oscar

Not at all similar to the 'actual' real story, but this is a fantastic film. Beautiful Cinematography, and wardrobe to die for. Amazing characters. Only a very small part of this story relates to the true story, but this was enjoyable to the last minute.

At the same time there were no real reports from russia. It seemd like a country with nuclear wapons, who don't hesitate to kill, against a country who did literaly 'nothing' (they didn't know better).

Her character is awarded sympathy for averting WW3. That's one way of looking at it. Another way is that she handed the Soviets information that kept them in power long enough to murder tens of millions of people. It is also possible that had they not had the bomb their totalitarian regime would not have lasted, collapsed and all those murdered lives saved and still no nuclear war.
Perhaps she is guilty of being naïve, but she was in a position of responsibility and under instructions to which she betrayed. The inspiration that her character was based upon was not naïve, and knew exactly what she was doing.
You cant possibly know how it ended up otherwise. Besides it was USA who actually utilized nukes.

She is by far one of the best actresses on the scene now. She's always 100% believable and real, not over-the-top like most of the other women on screen. I just watched a scene with Glenn Close in her Oscar-nominated role, and it's nothing but yelling. It's an Oscar-bait performance. And of course, the idiotic Academy thinks that's good acting. Frankly, good acting is when an actress becomes the character and inhabits it. Not just yells and screams at the top of her lungs. Anyone can do that. People like Judi Dench know how to become the character without all those bad habits. Frankly, this year, I hope Yaliltza Aparacio wins Best Actress for "Roma." She was superb, a master class is becoming a character. True acting. Not yelling.

Un film qui malgré ses invraisemblances hollywoodiennes habituelles avance au moins deux vérités: les Américains n'avaient pas besoin de larguer les 2 bombes, ils étaient bien évidemment informés que le Japon allait capituler incessamment après avoir perdu la bataille stratégique de Mandchourie contre les Russes, donc les crimes de guerre contre les populations civiles d'Hiroshima et Nagasaki n'ont servi qu'à impressionner les soviétiques qui de toute façon se sont munis de la même technologie voire supérieure immédiatement après.
2ème vérité contre la propagande “l'Europe c'est la paix”: non, ce n'est pas l'union européenne qui a instauré la paix entre la France et l'Allemagne mais bien le statu quo de la guerre froide, ce glacis géopolitique avec la menace que tout pète à tout moment d'une part, et d'autre part le vieillissement de la pyramide des âges.
Les langues commencent à se délier et des esprits libres et honnêtes s'expriment face à l'endoctrinement narratif qui nous a été imposé.

Why do these 'period' dramas consistently fail to produce anything like a convincing impression of the period? People in 1940s Cambridge didn't all drive around in showroom-shiney cars! The urban environment was actually much grubbier then than now, yet filmmakers nearly always ignore that fact and go all out to create a pristine fantasy past mired in sacharrine nostalgia and wishful thinking. Name me one 'period' film where people drive knackered cars and have food stains on their clothes!
Seen the Queen of England getting arrested was a good start for the movie.

It is really ridiculous - so many people here have passed their judgement on that film without actually watching it. Watch it and judge it then, please. You might still hate it or not, who knows.
this is in every way the stereotype of a trailer for a story based on true events. music. meaningful quotes like "how far would you go?", the music, the one scene with the emotional outburst. doesn`t mean it's a bad movie though. the trailer is just such a cliche :D
