i owe my life to my current service dog. i lived alone at the time and he was trained to hit a medic alert button and bark in response if there was a seizure. i was taking a shower one day when it happened and i went down in the shower blocking the drain. medic did his job. i was blocking the drain and water began to build up. i spent a resulting week in the hospital but thanks to my amazing dog im still alive. what freedom i was given.

The majority of the schools and the programs that train these dogs ask that the client help with the fundraising for their dog. These dogs cost on the upwards of $20,000 per year to train. When you think about it like that you are getting a heck of a deal. It is so worth it.

Evan my son's name is Linkyn and he is 7 years old like your self, and just like you he is epileptic and raised the money through fund raising for a seizure service dog. May God bless you and your family and your dog, and may your condition get better as times go's by also good luck with that acting career buddy.

I know exactly what he's going through. I was born with epilepsy at 9 months old.
I was almost 8 years seizure-free in November 2014 until I had a gran-mal. Then, had another seizure in February of this year.
Luckily, my chihuahua sticks by the whole time and loves me!!

My daughter is in desperate need of a service dog and is also from VA for her seizures which have been monitered as constant. I've been searching for local help and organizations to assist since financially we also cannot write a check for the amount for a few years now. This will be life saving for her too. There has to be some hope out there for this to happpen for her.

My dog would bark like crazy when I had seizures. Actually got me out of a few scrapes. The irony was, she died having cluster seizures, and I had no idea what was going on. She wasn't trained or anything, but she knew what was up.

I was born with epilepsy and cerebral palsy. I have a twin brother, i was born first. My brother was born with no problems. I take phenytoin for my epilepsy, as a child I was on phenabarbatone, then at 14 i was put on Epilim 500mg. Which caused me to gain lots of weight. I went to live in Canada for a few years where I was taken off eperlim & switched to phenytoin. Which I still take today. As a child I had grand mal seizures, which doctors said I would grow out of. Which I did, but I now have petit mal. It' feels weird when I have it, i can hear all thats going on around me, but ppl and any noise, sound much louder, plus it feels like I'm floating on water. Before the seizure I get the smell like burnt toast. I can have a seizure at any time, night or day. Unpredictable. I feel a little confused when I come round, which lasts for a couple of minutes, then I'm back with you again. Usually a cup of tea helps me recover. I read a lot of blogs where people who shared their testimonies kept mentioning Anti-seizure Herbal medication. I searched for a website I just followed the email address of Doctor Patrick that was shared on these testimonies; I got lucky when I got a reply from Dr. Patrick. I followed his instruction, used Herbal Medicine in less than 2 months, I was already cure because of the changes I was seeing. Within a period of 5 months, I was cured totally forever. I went back to my neurologist, I was checked up and marked epilepsy free. If you need his help you can Contact this herbal doctor via his email herbalmedicalhome@gmail.com and WhatsApp connection is +2348102558553 for help...

She is now 17 and has had a seizure on a school bus trip because she fell asleep so they can happen anytime that she sleeps. Her latest happened at a Holiday Dinner at a friends, she fell asleep on couch after dinner woke up for a few minutes then within minutes began to seize. Taken to ER released and seized again in my bed 3 hrs later. I am Canadian and are health care although free is awful

I have mini seizures constantly all day and it’s scary. If I had a seizure dog i wouldn’t be as scared because I would know when it’s about to happen. I still would be scared because it could always be a big seizure. I can’t have a seizure dog though because my dad is allergic.

My Siberian Husky, Avalanche, was at the park with my husband when he had a grand-mal seizure in the 108F heat. Instead of running off like usual she alerted a woman and went back to him. She sat beside him until my husband recovered then led him to a shady area under a tree until my husband was able to walk her home.

I had a stroke at 12 years old and very violent seizures ever since. The force they put on my brain has caused lesions. About the time this airs in 2011, I was 20ish, i was walking by a park and had a bad seizure and i woke up in my boxers 3 hours later. To this day I never know if i was robbed or i just did something weird while i was postictal. have a service dog really would have helped. Let me tell you, calling your wife saying "i lost my clothes" and having to get tested cuz you dont know what you did, or was done to you puts a strain on the relationship

When he threw that sarcastic look at her I lost it haha I have Epilepsy, and had my last seizure just last night. I was trying to use the restroom and I guess it hit me. I had a big glass vase with a sharp rim in front of me on the floor to wash the shower with, and I guess my seizure hit me (Gran Mal) and I must have fallen forward, and I busted my head on the rim of the glass vase, and then I think a few more times on the side of the tub and the floor. There are bigger puddles and smears of blood all over the floor, tub, wall, etc and then my hair all on one side of my head was coated in blood, my face was covered in blood and it had just gotten everywhere. It was a total mess. So next thing I know I open my eyes, I'm in excruciating pain, and I've lost over an hour of time. (It's like that everytime- where you have lost a huge chunk of time and slowly things start to come back about what the last thing you remember was etc) So I went and woke my husband up- it was about six AM- and at first I tell him I think I had another seizure or fell down and he starts to say okay, but he sits up to look at me and I think his facial expression was freakier than anything. He glanced at me, then did a double take and said, "Oh my God" and turned his phone flash light on to see me.
So he says , let's get you cleaned up and we go back to the bathroom and look at everything in there. He went back to normal pretty quickly, which is what I love about him because he knows if I can tell he's really freaked out than that makes me _more_ upset at first, until the weird feelings seizures give you wear off. We kind of laughed it off and went to bed.
This is the second seizure I've had in the last few weeks. I'm already diagnosed with Epilepsy and have had many seizures. I just missed my dose of my medication these last two recent times.
Anyways, my point is, I'm trying to find out how I could maybe get my English Bull Terrier trained , if possible. I'm not sure how that works.
I really have to give those parents serious props for sticking together. Obviously, I don't blame anyone who just can't quite keep a romance or marriage going through that, but they definitely deserve some credit. The part where they put him to bed, then later when they're going to sleep to grab him is brilliant. I know when parents have to have their kids sleep with them it kind of takes the romance out of things, so that really is , imo , a pretty genius idea haha

Look for an organization that trains Seizure Service Dogs. You will have to chose between a Seizure Alert Dog or a Seizure Response Dog. Response Dogs do not alert, and Alert Dogs do. You sign an application and then it will go on from there. I know of Canine Partners For Life and Paws With A Cause. Canine Partners For Life trains Seizure Alert Dogs and Paws With A Cause trains Seizure Response Dogs.
Most organizations don't train someones personal dog, but some do. Also, most of the time you need to have at least 1 seizure per month to qualify for a dog.
      Hope this helps!! Stay safe.

There's no "best" breed for seizures or/and anxiety. Any breed will due!!! Any breed can be a service dog as long as they have the right personality and skills to learn. My labradoodle who is 8 years old is my service dog for mobility, PTSD, psychiatric, and seizure alert.

I know someone who has a giant breed dog, and I'm currently shopping for a GSP for my seizure dog. It has more to do with how trainable a dog is and how their personality meshes with yours (I'm a runner, and I hike a lot, so the GSP fits me). A very small dog would not work as a blocking dog, but there are few other restrictions.

Most dogs are given away at no charge, and so are these. They didn't explain in the video that the dog was already paid for. Volunteers train and raise puppies, then the dog goes to training camp back at the Ohio facility, and is given to a family. In exchange the family raises money to help pay for other dogs, and it continues in a cycle like that. Evan's dog was paid for by other service dog recipients. These dogs really cost $25,000 to train. It isn't a shame, it's paying it forward.

I'm very confused by this video. Why does the boy need a SD if the seizures only happen at night and the parents know they only happen at night? Also, $13,000 is a ridiculous amount to charge for a SD, not to mention, there is some serious debate going on as to whether you can actually train seizure alert. It has never been proven you can reliably train it. Only diabetic alert has been shown to have been reliably trained.

That is not true anymore Seizure alert dogs have been in useful and reliable service for many years. Many do not need to be trained to alert, only how to behave in public once they detect the chemical change and how to pass their public access tests. These dogs alert without training reliably and consistently.
They save their partners from liver and kidney damage from taking their meds all day every day. With these dogs they only need to take their meds when the companion tells them. And most of the time that is up to 45 minutes before onset.

4 paws for ability is taking advantage of the disabled. $13,000 is ridiculous.
Canine Companions for Independence Provides Service animals FREE of charge as do many other Assistance Dogs International accredited training facilities. The ones that charge exorbitant fees like this are just taking advantage for profit.
Also "Training" dogs to do Seizure "Alert" is a gross misrepresentation as you cannot TRAIN a dog to warn before a seizure you must FIND a dog that does this and then train it how to assist the individual. You CAN train a seizure RESPONSE dog. This is a dog that will assist after the seizure is in course. As I understand dogs that warn in advance are one in 800.

I have trained service dogs and actually I have trained and own a seizure alert service dog myself. So yes it is possible to train dogs to alert to a seizure before I’m having one. The dog must be trained with samples of the individuals blood and other fluids specific to who they are going to be assisting. If I didn’t have my dog I would be much more limited on what I would be able to do...including living independently. The cost seems extreme but just like this agency, many other specialized training facilities offer different options to obtain these unique life saving dogs. I see your comment is over 4 years old so hopefully you’ve updated your knowledge and understanding of this matter now.

katiecash46 That's not nothing funny to joke about. Having one seizure is hard on a person imagine biting your mouth every time you have a seizure and that bite leads to a sore in your mouth or falling and hitting your head or the headache that follows being weak because your body is drained from having being stiffed or shaking while going through a seizure. Seizures are not funny or not to joke about. I know I use to have 11 or more a day until 12 years later my doctor finally found the right mixture of meds for me to control them. I wouldn't wish them on no one in this world not even dumb people who think making jokes of it is a funny thing. God bless you!
