Graphical texts are a critical component of any geography or social studies program. Photos, diagrams, sketches, graphs, tables, maps and satellite images - virtually any visual means of communication - convey information in a concise format and help to illustrate how one piece of information is related to another. They also provide an opportunity to help develop and apply critical thinking skills.
This workshop will share a series of hands-on, classroom-ready activities designed to enhance students’ visual literacy skills through a geographical lens. A number of strategies will be explored, utilizing both the “traditional” tools of literacy and those that are discipline-specific, with all materials provided to make these lessons “Monday morning ready.”
