6:46 Critiquing writing pieces helps you see your own mistakes! 😲
7:10 Self-Editing for Fiction Writers is a great resource book! 📖
8:38 "In fact, just telling people you were bored or confused is like 50% of a good critique." 😂
11:27 "The truth is if you don't have line editing right you're not going anywhere." ✍️
13:10 Read at least five solid writing craft books before you ask for critiques! 📚
20:06 Never pressure anyone to take your critiques or change their work solely because of what you think.✌️
24:36 Most of the time, all you need is a critique of the first 50 pages.👍
⭐️ To be a good critique partner recognize the differences between: 1. basic line editing, 2. genre expectations, & 3. personal taste

I did have a horror story about a CP who told me i should just scrap a piece and choose a different story to write. That there was no way it'll sell, no one will want to read it, it's boring... Found out this person hated fantasy, and hated romance, but decided to critique my fantasy romance LOL
meanwhile i had like 6 other people talking about how they liked the cozy vibe and the setting (one of them demanding their favorite side character not die, and i had to assure that the character was going to make it to the end). Had some cold reads done on live streams where they hosts would comment as they read what they thought in the moment, and the chat would help with their input of what they liked/disliked in the moment.
There was 1 host who, as he read, would mention how he has questions, then in the following paragraph would say "oh, now i have the answer, it's right there." And watching him think it over, making suggestions, deferring to his chat, it felt a lot more encouraging.
after having feedback that was more encouraging while still constructive... I have to wonder if that nightmare CP just wanted to tear others down 🤔 and how many other people have they done that to -- writers who maybe didn't have a wide net for feedback in various area, on different platforms, and felt completely dismayed and ready to give up?
I think this is why it's so important to match with someone who enjoys the kind of genre, style, and setting as what you're writing, so you can get the most effective feedback.

I wrote a MG novel last year (still love reading them at 35!). I'm close to finishing the first draft of my first go at a novel for the adult aged market (so that I can self-publish as MG is so hard to crack there) it's a small town soft mystery/romance. After that i'm going to try a low fantasy with mystery/romance themes. I know i'll stick to soft mystery/romance but giving myself a chance to see if I prefer to write the real world or fantasy.
I read: MG, YA (only if fantasy/romance), Historical romance, fantasy romance (basically I need romance somewhere lol), Cozy reads, literary fiction (as a short story), poetry
I dislike: Really dark storylines or heavy/constant action/battles, torture scenes, sci-fi, horror

I'm 35 so i'm not young just... starting late. Cheerleaders are *such* an important part of writing a first draft, for me. I need someone to tell me I'm pretty like, once a day, otherwise I get demotivated because I'm Bad At Writing (I am not Bad At Writing, but the bugs in my brain refuses to believe that). Also, for the record, they've done some studies on the sandwich method of providing feedback when it comes to workplace management and the studies have found that it uh. Is not great. The second slice of good things are essentially erased by the critique/needs-improvement talk before? But I forget what they suggested to do instead. And I have no idea if the "this doesn't really work like you think it does" applies to things like writing or if it just applies to corporate work.
Anyway, if anyone's looking for a scifi romance critique partner, hit me up!

Maybe workplace management just needs to be less critical! I do beta reading for fantasy authors and their novels. I'm happy to do it for free provided that the service is reciprocated when I release my own novel next year.
My email is listed on my profile.
It takes me about a month to complete the book and give a review. I usually focus on the positives for public reviews, and send critiques or in depth discussion to the author's email.
I'm reading fantasy at the moment, and I will need a title and blurb. I don't pay attention to descriptions or when people compare their books to other books or authors. The reader is not going to have that information and I want to give genuine feedback.
At the moment I have two books in the queue. I'm currently working on my own novel, and I want to become an editor, so this will give me valuable experience. Leave a reply if you have any questions.

I have a friend that writes short stories and sends them to me for critique. He has not studied the craft, I don't think he reads anything at all really, and of course his stuff is full of grammar mistakes and every sin you can imagine, BUT he writes with such a naturality that me washing down reality through 45 rationalization filters could never obtain. I'm going to guess emerging from that struggle with some sort of dignity is part of actually learning the craft.
