    The original story for 8th Man was based on an story written by Japanese science fiction writer ”Kazumasa Hirai”.
    Kazumasa Hirai was the author of the original manga that was published in a magazine for boys, and the cartoonist was Jiro Kuwata, who drew the manga, which was then adapted into this animated TV version.
    The original manga was serialized in a children's manga magazine for children in the 1960s in Japan, and the animation was created for children.
    But the author was a popular science fiction writer, and the original story was based on a hard science fiction content without cutting any corners, which was suitable for adults and could be appreciated by them.
    This is also the reason why 8thMan was so popular in Japan in the 1960s, transcending generations.
    This animation was also faithful to Kazumasa Hirai's original story, so it can still be appreciated around the world today.
    The most famous work of "Kazumasa Hirai's" was his life's work "Shin genma Taisen" (Truth History of The Great War Against the Phantom Devil ) which has a circulation of more than 5 million copies in Japan at that time.

      Very interesting information! Thank you so much. I really liked the concept of old mangas and anime that was aimed towards children having it's limit pushed so that all ages generally can enjoy them. Very similar to Tatsunoko brother's interview on Speed Racer and Gatchaman
      Other than 8th Man, the duo Kazumasa and Kuwata made another cyborg action manga in 1969 called 'Death Hunter' and it's possibly could be their darkest work because of how disturbingly violent and metal it was

    I saw this whole movie from beginning to end. And from what I've heard, it's received a lot of mixed to negative reviews. A lot of American audiences unfamiliar with the original 60s show, have said that this movie is a bad Robocop rip off. Even though the latter was a much more recent franchise at the time. But in all honesty, the live action 8-Man film isn't all that bad. In fact, for 1992, this movie is actually quite fun and entertaining. I like how they designed his costume. I was rather surprised that they made use of the same soundtrack that was used for the OVA 8-Man After. And we even have some of the same voice actors as well including Steve Bullen, Dan Warren, and Mike Reynolds. And also, Ken was awesome in this movie.

    The premise of this movie is based on one of the stories from the original 60s series. More specifically, 8-Man's rivalry with his half brother Ken. In the 60s series however, it was slightly different. Ken was said to have willingly become a cyborg for the sole purpose of revenge. While in this movie, he was brought back to life by Professor Tani after he was fatally injured in a terrible accident. This version of Ken doesn't seem too evil. But rather, he seems depressed that he was brought back to life as a machine. But then again, depression can cause a person to do crazy things.

    Another big 8th Man here. Liked this alot, especially the film noir look. Had they stuck closer to the original series, reception may have been more positive. The Samantha 7 character from the original series was bad ass --- gave me nightmares! This series could definitely be rebooted, and probably is in process. I mean, cyborgs are just shy of reality. Check out HBO's upcoming reboot of Michael Crichton's WESTWORLD.

    • @Mandi7882
      @Mandi7882 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. 8th Man (not RoboCop!) should be done. HBO, Showtime or Starz could take it. Hopefully if Westworld catches on (and before they hook onto Futureworld) maybe they'll FINALLY bring these series to life.

    • @MDthornton83
      @MDthornton83 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree. A reboot of 8-Man is possible. But as fate would have it, nobody seems willing to do so. But I see so much potential for another reboot that's more faithful to the source material. Because 8-Man hasn't seen a new entry in ages. If there were to be fresh new take on the series, I can imagine it once again focusing on Hachiro Azuma, with Hazama Itsuru being his partner. And we could reintroduce characters like Ken, Tony, Samantha 7, and Enon X05 to name a few. And let's not forget Jupiter, the robot who could create tornadoes that disintegrate all matter. If that isn't badass, I don't know what is. Seriously though, if Casshern could have a reboot in the form of Casshern Sins and recently as 2008, then surely they could do the same for 8-Man.

    They say that this is a huge flop in Japan. But honestly speaking, it is not that bad. At least I was able to see the world the director was trying to establish. It's the world of hard-boiled, rather than super-hero action flick. I understand that. However the Japanese audience in the 90's did not expect it, and thus it ended up with a flop.

    I have not seen this movie in years. (I rented it at a video store. VHS of course). I would like to see a remake of this film with the original story line from the animated series. And not from a Hollywood Studio, from a Japanese Studio in the Japanese languish with English subtitles. I was a kid in the 60's watching the animated series.

      Agreed. I like watching the original audio better. Seeing actors being dubbed over is kind of weird, especially since I'm familiar with one of the actors in this movie. I know how he's supposed to sound and it took me out of it for a bit.

    Looking at the drug packing lab scene around 23 min in .. wow .. this looks like a horribly inefficient way of packing pills. I even looked up how people do this for real and there are special tools for it but they usually put the powder in a bowl for one-at-a-time pill packing, not just spread it all out on a big table.
    I suspect the whole 'smoking' thing was due to culture -- it was customary for a 'hero' to smoke so they had to make up some excuse for a robot/cyborg to do so.

      Well, that was a thing in the original 1963-65 series... when practically everyone smoked, in every bar and restaurant, and long before the tobacco industry came under fire by the medical community. This was especially true in Japan, far after the US had started to have so many no-smoking areas, for a couple of decades. Cigarettes were universal, especially in Tokyo.
