Ah gahd Fukuyama. I only listened to this to get David's take on it. Very glad I did! Universal Homogeneous State...truly this is the ideology of the neoliberals and their neoconservative enforcers. Versus "Hegel's vision playing itself out" -- very good! This is super relevant to China's manifesto and Putin's speech yesterday.
PS The successful communist revolutions of the 20th C were peasant revolutions, true, but they weren't forced on the millions by strong-man dictators. How the USSR and PRC evolved, during and after their revolutions, in relation to their Enlightenment goals is another matter.

I really enjoyed this explanation and I completely agree Fukuyama was so far off that looking at it now it's almost comical. One thing I never understood was why would market capitalism necessarily lead to social liberalism. China's "economic reforms" didn't lead to increased political freedom at all. Fukuyama is basically just there to make the rich and powerful feel less guilty about their immense wealth.

When you are examining a person who had as much acclaim as Fukuyama, if the conclusion you come to is that they got something wrong then my advice would be to revisit the subject. This goes for more than just Fukuyama, people get to where they end up not through chance or being bad at something. If you’ve not got to their level then try to remove your biases and reexamine it.

even canada has the same sort of political problem with the only choices being strictly within a capitalist framework it’s hard to call any politician a leftist. their left wing goes as far as lukewarm acceptance of marginalized people.

When your views become so radical that you can't even see a left politician in a objectively left country (even compared to european standards), leads me to think that your ideas are a little bit too radical don't you think?

According to Kojeve, how does the movement of history, culminating in a universal and homogeneous state, resolve the otherwise irresolvable tension or conflict between tyranny and wisdom? Why do you think leo strauss rejects this resolution?

Interesting arguments but I feel more that Fukuyama’s interpretation is not so much a misreading of Hegel as it is an active interpretative disagreement about history. It is an independent argument, and I think that’s made obvious by his attempt at negotiating Hegel’s end of history with Nietzsche’s Last man.

Real communism has never been tried. Very hard to argue against a claim like this.

    • @schadowizationproductions6205

An analysis of capitalism is an exact prescription of communism that inherently leads to authoritarianism and suffering that can't happen in capitalist countrys. Also hard to argue against but at least not impossible if taken seriously. ;)

    • @thekratomchannel
      @thekratomchannel ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@schadowizationproductions6205 not sure I understand your claims but we could look at historical examples and easily make claims about which systems produce which results. However if real communism is purely an ideal and has never been actualized then its whatever people want it to be which is particularly devastating when an idea like this gets taken up by the masses.

@@thekratomchannel real communism is China right now. They are crushing. Will be largest economy in the world in a few years. Capitalism hasn’t existed for damn near a century. Most of what is positively attributed to capitalism’s success is really bourgeoise socialism or in other words fascism, if you like. 40 hour work week? Fascists did that. No more children working in mines? Fascists did that too. Fascism has achieved most goals of communism lol.

When I first heard the 'end of history' idea in the late '90s I thought it sounded dumb.
The only way I thought it could end is if people didn't exist anymore.

Just ou of curiosity: dont you think it is a bit bizar for him to critize fukuyama for a period which happened after his book on that subject? The argument that he supported the bush argument does also not seem te cut it for me: it is not because you support the whole that you cant be critical about that thing right?

  • @jvpresnall

Maybe as a public/popular proposal for a plan of strategic policy aimed largely at American and Western European audience, the contradictions and inconsistencies can be accounted for in terms of the argument being exoteric, following in the vein of his “Straussian” education at Telluride House with Allan Bloom at Cornell. Perhaps, he has much more critical and popularly unpersuasive thoughts regarding “liberal democratic” and capitalist societies. He offers this just so story as a palliative belying a deeper cynicism and/or pessimism.
