troubled development and corporate greed is only 2/3 of the issues. the last one being incompetent game devs that would even refuse to hire the old guard and abused their relationships with the ones that remained (the announcer va, chief and cortana va) you know, the ones that hated halo? yeah microsoft wasnt responsible for that
Bungie didn't make the title update for Reach, they bailed after making the first map pack. 343 made TU1 and the dumb split playlists with different balancing.
Yup, I'll back-up that statement. 343 Industries prepared that Title Update as Bungie had finally moved on from Halo & Microsoft's contractual obligations following the release of the Noble Map Pack, with the subsequent Defiant Map Pack primarily developed by Certain Affinity & the Anniversary Map Pack developed by 343 Industries & Certain Affinity (Certain Affinity would go on to be a major supporting studio for 343 Industries going forward, particularly in development for Halo 4 Multiplayer & Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer). For all of Halo: Reach's faults in the Multiplayer experience (I *love* the game, but the standard Multiplayer experience is undoubtedly it's weakest aspect while it's Custom Games was arguably it's strongest, especially as I used to *love* Rocket Hog Race in the 3v3v3v3 Multi-Team Playlist in addition to the Action Sack playlist, of which the latter did mostly return in MCC) and although I didn't enjoy the Title Update changes (They had to roll-back the bleed-through change due to a major issue that The Master Chief Collection would later solve & allow to happen there and while the Armour Lock changes sound great, I can't help but feel that other Armour Abilities have become more acknowledged as a greater menace to the Multiplayer sandbox over-time, especially as I caught so few people actually using Armour Lock in what games of Halo: Reach I did play with my continued & favoured use of Jetpack & Evade), they actually didn't do much to address the issues that the game's Multiplayer had for which the community Map-Makers otherwise did a better job of attempting to resolve (Not that you'd manage to encounter them often enough on the Xbox 360 Matchmaking as I remember quite the habitual voting favour for Sword Base whenever that only-good-for-Free-For-All map showed up). It does play very smoothly in The Master Chief Collection, but the absolutely elegant user interface from the Xbox 360 is sorely missed, along with the ability to locally store as many Custom Games files as your Storage Device could hold (You get a generous enough 150 'Shared Files', but only 50 'Private Files' for all games in the Collection, which is *appallingly low* when you remember that Halo 3 alone was originally limited to 100-per-Storage-Device, which Memory Cards & then USB-Storage could intuitively circumnavigate). Plus, I can't help but feel like that they should've offered all of the base-game's armour right from the start, especially as Guest Profiles cannot access them and they were the start of a lot of "On the fly" attempts of providing compelling Progression that I personally think *never* succeeded or was even finished in some instances (Get me started on 'The Exchange' and I'll start getting genuinely furious as to how something so evidently simple to manage & maintain has been absolutely not), if not actually hurt the game experience due to how swiftly bad habits of players came back (I could still often find "Spinning-in-Idle" players as recent as last year in Firefight, all the while it felt like only 3-4/10 matches ever resulted in all players participating, with many just remaining idle either to grind the ranks or because they were Away-From-Device while waiting & hadn't realised that they had *finally* found a Match). It really makes me think that 343 Industries has just continuously repeated mistakes that Bungie had applied lessons learned from Halo 3 as soon as Halo: Reach launched (A chief example being that Bungie avoided Multiplayer Achievements that could result in such disruption as lobbies being hijacked just to achieve them, all the while 343 Industries would continuously bring such things back as soon as the Anniversary Map Pack or as recent as the Challenge system for The Master Chief Collection).
Honestly the TU wasn't all bad but every change was so controversial with people for and against each of them that I think it is cool of 343i to go and respectfully give people who didn't want the TU playlists to still play online. Sure, in a vacuum it is a bizarre decision but it was a nice gesture.
@@Bizargh Bro, you've gotta learn how to use parenthesis properly. You're using them to insert complete fucking sentences into other sentences, and when you use them, you're often abandoning the train of thought you begun in the first portion of your sentence before the parenthesis. Goddamn man, this shit is English 101.
God, watching this in 2024 and after being there at that time in the thick of it all those years ago. When Halo was on top, when everyone was playing and as soon as you hopped online you would receive 20 different invites to either play campaign, multiplayer, forge or custom games. I remember growing up around that time and in school, the topic would eventually come up if you or the person you were talking to plays halo. That feeling after a long day of wanting to hop on and have some fun on the best game on the Xbox will never be lost on me. The community of people that played, which was one of the big reasons halo was such a fun game to hop on as well. Honestly watching this and thinking about how the franchise is today is beyond depressing. I feel like an old man reminiscing about days long gone and waiting to hear someone that is much younger telling me to "just give it up already" even though I am only 25, and those days felt like they just happened yesterday. Seeing how dedicated we are as a community makes me happy though. When Microsoft and 343 drop the ball at every turn, it is always up to us to make things happen. We do this every time no matter how tiresome it could be or how big the challenge is. WE MAKE IT HAPPEN. I am proud to be apart of this community. I am going to dig out my old OG Xbox and finally put in the effort to play insignia and x-link kai, as well as join the sunrise discord. So thank you Kacey for that final extra push I needed. I hope we can get back to how things were back in the day. With the release of halo infinite, it shut down that stupid argument of people saying "No one wants to play halo these days". Because when halo infinite launched on both steam and Xbox those player counts spoke more than words ever could and reminded me of the golden days. We are not tired of halo and I don't think we ever will become tired. The world just needs a true halo game, and we along with everyone else will be there to recreate those golden days of the past. Great Video, as always!
Just wait five more years you'll be more cynical, jaded and even more pissed off your favorite franchise has been fucked to hell and back and is irredeemably screwed. H.I on ALL platforms, it barely plays on PC even mine says basically game is far too crap to play but my machine plays GTA V perfectly. Freaking A. I'm 30 and I was well in the thick of the Halo way back when as well, I got good by ONLY playing Campaign on H2 and then when firefight came out I was only playing that endlessly with endless waves smoking a joint and blaring music and maybe having a beer. Unfortunately I was not old enough to really drink or smoke but that didn't stop me from living it up and I got gud to the point I never had to really play multiplayer but I did anyways and was fucking awesome. Sprinting, the armor powers and now sprint is default and now we have sliding that shit is so cool too bad H.I. and the community and the company is in the state it is now. It's all Fortnite and shit now and now that we have that, it bothers me to lose at all, to be out done by some snot nosed little shit that has no life and all the time in the world to play whatever else and doesn't. I was never bothered back then of losing because it was fun, now Sweats dominate the Gaming Community while the haxors are even more relentless. Because Fortnite's Standards have made people worse mentally and kids are insufferable because of it all. Nothing is fun because it is all Sweat now, cringe. I remember playing Halo 2 back on the Original Xbox in the early 2000's with my childhood best friend, then I got a 360 Arcade so I could play Halo 2 backwards compat and I took that everywhere with me. Now Xboxes just do not last as long, you need to replace it or have it repaired by MS and that is made exasperatedly worse because of new advances and laser disk trays are a thing of the past you do not own your games anymore even though you bought a copy. Halo is in fact tired and old, it has no identity ever since Halo 4 it has had an identity crisis of the self and of the franchise. It's become Fortnite basically just without the building. How can you be so blind and ignorant? It was great back then, our memories and experience of it was great but now has been tarnished by copycat companies and the ever-expanding idea of "Metaverses" and Battle Royale-likes. Cringe. New game mode in Halo, yeah it just has been reduced to a Sweat match or devolves into a self defeating game mode, and they cannot even keep any sort of NON-Sweat game modes in the game at all. What the ever fuck happened to Bot Boot Camp?! Oh yeah constant inconsistency just like Walmart is unreliable for products and where they ever are they move around stuff ALL the time. Halo now has a shit TV show for smooth brainers and lazy arses that do not or cannot read Source Material. World building, go talk to Takahata101 he has more insight in one fingernail than all of Hollywood. Monty Glue, his sister has more insight as well and can tell a fascinating and immersive story. Activists in the place of actual writers and it's all dominated by politics and shit people telling us to "do better" when it is them that needs to do so. It's just not like how it was, son. You should get used to it the faster the better, for your sake. Rose tinted glasses and all that. It's nice to hear someone is still positive but I think it's a bit misguided and lacking certain eye-opening details in the world around you. Here watch an anime called 86, you'll get why positive reinforcement is lost after being fucked for so long like that as the 86 were in that anime. It's a worse effect of Conditioning, thanks Pavlov you git. It feels strange and alien to have positive reinforcement be used on you if you were fighting tooth and nail for so long with a corrupted government "Not" putting human soldiers on the battlefield as a means of "No human lives were lost" as a referential form of the book "All Quiet on The Western Front" and a combination of 1986, even Jon-Roh is like that as well as Akira. You'll get it, it just takes some time and understanding with a little bit of personal experience. Stop getting stomped on and put your foot down with a nice resounding and firm, "No more!"
I certainly make use of that choice for myself (I do appreciate some of the new additions such as the Fireteam Raven armour and the camouflage weapon & vehicle paintjobs that I wish were as broadly applied as they were for Halo: Combat Evolved, but I just cannot get used to the Tech Suit changes made to the Elites' armour, so I turn it off just to have the old one back). I only additionally disable it for Halo: Combat Evolved (Again, some of it's appreciated, but I miss the old texture work & much prefer something akin to what the mod Halo: Combat Revolved does with such things) as Halo 4 only benefits from having it on and I don't know if you'd miss out on some of the genuine improvements Halo: Reach got. Still, when you look at the fact that Eldewrito actually expands the customisation options for both Spartan & Elite player-models with existing in-game assets (When others are not ported from other games), it can be hard not to look at that and ponder where 343 Industries priorities were in providing "distractions" for the slower & more meaningful work being done in the meantime when I can imagine a lot more people asking for the Halo: Reach Elites to get the customisation option expansion that H2:AM did, the Halo: Reach Spartan Armour/Helmet Attachments to be more freely selected or Halo 2: Anniversary Multiplayer to have more highlights from the Halo 4 armour ported over (I believe they are the same character models) rather than for all of that 'Mythic' nonsense they siphoned off from their Seasons/Series into The Exchange just to be even more bloody annoying to unlock, if not ever made available to unlock at all to this day in at least once case (The brought-from-the-cutting-room-floor Halo: Reach additions & Fireteam Raven assets were largely appreciated, but I think more people wanted the vehicles, maps & weapons from Halo Online rather than it's armour sets).
Only if they use anything that didn't come from the original game, which basically every new player or guest profile will be using anyway since they're likely more interesting in playing the game than bothering to make use of all of the original game's options that come "out of the box" for it & Halo 4 (If only 343 Industries didn't make Halo 3: ODST & Halo: Reach exceptions to this, especially as nothing about unlocking anything for them again is "fun" or "meaningful"). Besides, who even cares about who's wearing what in Halo 3 besides themselves anymore? I sure don't, nor have I met anyone who has since the Xbox 360 days. The most mention I ever see is about those who use Elites as their chosen Player Model (Of which I do).
My problem is that I like the Fireteam Raven and Macworld armor, yet all the garbage armor was added to 3 and fucked with the art style. I’d rather have the option to choose what armor shows up and what doesn’t if it’s going to remove my ODST armor while I wear it.
I really appreciate you going out of your way to ensure your audience does their research on services like these. It’s actually inspiring and I’ll work to incorporate this into my own video scripts, hopefully nearly as good as you :p Phenomenal video. Seriously, a fantastic job well done ❤
As cool as the idea of Insignia and Sunrise are, and as glad as I am that they exist, I can't imagine myself ever going back to H2/3 FOVs when I've been playing games at 100+ for over a decade. Might be the first time a game would actually give me motion sickness. Still very happy that the option is there for those who want to pursue it, may the classics live forever.
it was like that with Halo Infinite with the FOV slider, it made me get headaches, feeling nauseous or even just perspective is visually weird and off kilter. I found the fight number but it took forever playing around with visuals over performance is discouraging it changing ANY settings even when you relaunched the game and ALL YOUR SETTINGS were reset. That shit made me not play for months.
I’ve got a hot HOT ass take on MCC; it’s biggest crime isn’t slight mechanic changes or usage of shit ports as baselines instead of just doing a proper port, no, none of that is that bad. The biggest crime is removing the concept of a FUCKING LOBBY. NO I DONT WANT TO REDO MATCHMAKING. I WANT TO STAY WITH THE PEOPLE IM PLAYING WITH WHEN I FINALLY FIND THE ONE OTHER PERSON ON MCC USING VOICE CHAT. I DONT CARE IF THEYRE BETTER THAN ME. I DONT CARE IF IM BEING ENTIRELY SHIT ON. I LIKE FRIENDS EVEN IF OUR ONLY INTERACTIONS HAVE BEEN TALKING TRASH.
This was pretty thorough and well done. Been looking for a video like this for a while. Thanks much. Subbed right away, especially after seeing you did a video on the old CODs too.
It makes me happy to see the state these titles are in currently, especially after what we've seen (and what you've taken the time to cover) with the back catalogue of BF and COD releases. Granted, there is a big time gap between the last game covered here and in the BF video from months prior, but it's something worth pointing out really.
Great video! I wanted to add that another HUGE difference between the classic halo and MCC experience is the egregious sbmm used in MCC where it feels like matchmaking after enough wins is forcing you to lose against stacks or inferior teammates. Its the main reason why on MCC you will see so many smurfs or stacked teams to counter this. Once the MCC PC port came out pre/post game lobbies and map selection(replaced by composer) were scrapped resulting in this new sbmm system.
For those with macbooks, there's a mac port of Halo CE (custom edition) called Halo MD (Halo Mini Demo). It has a server browser in the launcher and supports a wide range of mods and maps! This was my version of Halo as a child and it was really fun to run LAN parties. It's been years since I've touched it but hopefully there's still people out there using it.
Great video on Halo as a whole here. Last night I played two matches of Halo 1 on MCC PC and it wasn't perfect, but god after a long time away it felt good to be back. I grew up on Custom Edition and honestly it's such a wasted opportunity that MCC missed parity on features. I wish there was a proper community server browser with mod support, this isn't quite enough. Your point about the control scheme in 1 on PC made me laugh, as I play every shooter like that if I can, I suppose old habits die hard. Thank you anyway, hopefully some people see how to get onto some of these games and relive some nice memories. Always loved your videos and the way your present content, it's a big shame the TH-cam algorithm hasn't blown you up more.
I'm still a bit of a newcomer to the series, I never grew up with it, only got into it via MCC on Steam. But it's really impressive to see it's fans continue to maintain these games long after it's developers have moved on. I'm not a multiplayer person, hell, the only one I really did was Battlefield, and I don't really touch that nowadays, aside from some lingering feelings to try out BF2. I'm PvE through and through. But still, I wonder if these various methods would be any good with Co-op Campaign or Firefight... But it's hard enough getting people to play with me on MCC
Campaign, firefight and custom games on the 360 game all still work on LIVE. It’s just the matchmaking that’s gone. So theoretically you and some friends could play it no problem
MCC is being abandoned by 343, I think most people would be happy to just have new community maps every few months (there are hundreds of community maps ready to go), but 4v4, BTB and Invasion still has community maps rotating from 2011 😕 map veto is also sorely missed
The title update ruined Halo reach, each BTB game became team snipers with how accurate the DMR is. Now if you poke your head out for 0.2 seconds you'l be cross mapped by 5 people
Yo the absolute ODDS of this - just last week I invited a ton of friends over for me and my gf's housewarming, we all played Halo: Reach splitscreen on the OG Xbox 360 (first gen spaghetti edition, not the elite). I only just found out today by randomly being recommended a Mint Blitz video that this crazy modding scene has revived multiplayer with their goated coding skills! It's so funny, I was literally discussing this at the office with a boomer colleague, he doesn't game but is IT literate enough to understand how the internet works quite thoroughly - he said "hmm, couldn't you emulate web functionality by routing X-link (the LAN system link for Xboxes) through a VPN?" I was stunned, I never thought of that, I don't know if that tunneling method is what they used but it would certainly be ingenious. Anyway, in a few months I plan to do it again - I'm going to get another friend to bring his Xbox, we're going to link them together and join some games on the Reach or Halo 3 Sunrise Classic Servers as an 8-person premade! We range from quite good to absolute potato. I'm so hype for this, I can't wait, finally some Invasion and BTB action!
Also wanted to add, absolutely on point with the economic/management analysis of why Halo is stuck in a rut right now. It's an issue endemic to not just the gaming industry but all creative media in general - film, TV, games, music... Publishers are now just giant conglomerates with too much power, and most of the money (and decision-making) gets funneled into the marketing team, whose sole purpose is to battle other giant companies. The product therefore suffers, and we get locked into this miserable race to the bottom, where fewer and fewer games get made and they are all inispid and lukewarm, flailing about trying to appeal to the broadest audience but not really being genuinely enjoyed by anyone. That's why we now have microstransactions and day-1 DLC, pre-release betas and battle royale everything, instead of good story writing, split-screen couch co-op, memorable music and quality art direction, intelligent level design and engaging gameplay. I always caveat this with the fact that the indie dev scene has never been better - but obviously because of intellectual property copyright, that won't save our beloved franchises like Halo. Hopefully we see a return to what made it great in the not too distant - and in the meantime, at least awesome modders (and their wider community, like you the video maker and us the viewers!) are keeping the OG games and their spirit alive!
@@Kaceydotme A good one for example is saying Halo 2 Vista is a better version of the game. The MCC version is based off of that port and fixes a ton of the visual and netcode issues and is generally more authentic/plays better. Even with matchmaking, sure h2v has a server browser but the majority of the populated servers are absolutely terrible, like people doing 16 player lockout/midship and the like. Or with CE, the netcode is a huge improvement over the original pc ports. It's still not perfect but you had to literally lag shoot/lead all of your shots to hit in the original while that's not as much of an issue in the MCC. I say this as someone that played a ton of custom edition reguarly, MCC is a better experience in both the port and netcode. Your matchmaking points are correct though.
The issue with MCC H2 isn’t authenticity, though it does feel off- it’s that the matchmaking sucks, barely anyone plays H2, and while I didn’t include this in the video, H2 on MCC is full of the sweatiest players you’ve ever encountered. Even if you can hold your own, your team often won’t be able to and you’ll just get spawn killed and destroyed. Skill issue, yes, but I am better at Halo than most who are going to pick it back up bc of this video and if it’s not a good experience for me, it won’t be for them. Same with CE, never said the Netcode in custom edition was better. You’ve invented that viewpoint. The matchmaking is the problem, and both still feel wrong. There is no great way to play CE online right now, everything has a sacrifice, and personally the best option is organized private sessions with H1 Guide *via MCC*
@@Kaceydotme @Kaceydotme I might've misinterpreted you with CE sorry But with halo 2 that's just the community in general, I've seen sweats on insignia, h2v, mcc, etc. It's just what happens with long term communities on old games, it's not the game's fault. My first match on Insignia for example was against a bunch of level 40s-50s and they steamrolled me lol
Amazing breakdown Kacey. Really well put points across the board, especially on the future of Sunrise and Xenia. The only other caveat there is the lack of maintaining hoppers for Xenia, but there's a lot of good info still out there should folks choose to explore it further. The Xenia-netplay fork has also made immense strides (even addressing the arbitration/TrueSkill issues seen in H3), so the future is bright even if it isn't right around the corner.
in highschool we had an underground halo 1 ring. one person brought it one a usb and then it was everywhere. it was an all boys highschool so when it started going around it kept going. there was always 5-10 servers of chaos going on every day from 7:00am-2:47pm. halo 1 slug matches during dumbass religion class or during lunch hour taught me how to sweat
This is so comprehensive, detailed and realistic about the options of and the reality of playing them. I feel like the most a lot of Halo content creators don't go nearly as in-depth, even the ones that do their due diligence.
Fantastic video! This is really great, especially for people looking to get into classic halo mp. While hosting customs with your own groups tends to be the best option a majority of the time, it's great that there's just so many options out there. I've personally really enjoyed eldewritos resurrection, and its use as a modding platform is going to hopefully be the start of something amazing. It's such a shame that the playerbase died down really quickly, though. Playing the game on Vulkan runs it extremely well, practically perfectly, at least for me, and it's a shame to not be able to play as consistently as when it first dropped. But alas, maybe itll get a more consistent following later down the road. This was a really amazing video, especially as a long time halo fan. Keep up the great work, you've earned a subscriber ♥
Can we appreciate how well Halo has been persevered, either by the community or by 343. Despite its issues I'll always be thankful for the work done to bring MCC up to standard, it could always be a lot worse... I do miss the menus of Reach though, it was my favorite and I lost so many hours to it, grinding to make my Spartan look as stupid as possible. Good work on the video btw, didnt even know insignia could now do Halo 2, I was wondering why the prices of OG Xboxes was going up....
this video is so real, i enjoyed watching this a lot. its hard to get the purest classic halo experience, or rather "MCC/Infinite are just not the same" lmao but i do like the accessibility and the juice is definitely worth the squeeze haha
I honestly miss playing the legacy titles on split-screen. The last time I played them in split-screen with my brothers was back in 2015 or so I think. I know it was before we all got an Xbox One. Hits hard in the feels nowadays whenever I get any moods for Halo. So most of the time I'd just play the campaign or something on MCC. Reminiscing the past as I go through the campaigns or matches. I still hoped that at some point down the line, even with the issues with MCC, I could someday get a good match with people that aren't want to deal with the sweaty lobbies from social matchmaking. But I get nervous to ask people about custom matches. So that would also hurt the experience for me in terms of finding players. Hopefully, I can do it and find others that are wanting the same thing with these older games. Maybe make more memories as well.
One awesome thing about Halo CE is that it's almost perfectly emulated in Xemu emulator, *_including system link support_* , which makes it just about the only practical way to play splitscreen plus LAN on PC
This was a really great video and I wish I had time to hop into any of these services for playing classic Halo. Although, I do want to ask, have you thought about either doing a video on the legacy and state of both Halo 4&5? Or personally, I think this would be more fun if you ever had the chance. A retrospective on the Halo Communities custom game modes and the legacy of Forge? Going from makeshift infection on Halo 2 in random public lobbies to whole gamemodes made post Halo 3. I feel like we always talk about forge, but not many delve into the history of the community, custom games and Forge besides saying they're fun. But rather not how it started and how it grew from a few simple ideas.
I considered talking about both H4 and H5 early in the process but decided to keep it to Bungie partially because there’s really not much of a crowd around H4/5, at least that I’m aware of. But if I ever find something around them I’d love to play both more.
Halo 3 was my first experience online gaming ever. The game was Team Slayer on Narrows. One day, I will play a match like that again, and for Halo 2 as well. Thank you for making this video!
Since this video is touching on LANs and some more niche communities, I have to shout out LD50 and the NorCalHalo Discord for hosting LANs primarily focusing on CE consistently for years now.
This is a cool video and while I've never been super big into Halo's multiplayer (and thus, MCC works just fine for me), it's nice that you have options if you want a more authentic experience. It just really fucking sucks that Bungie didn't give an easy method for people to host their own servers and such (or at the very least, instructions on how to set that up) for when the servers eventually died. I really really wish that kind of thing was standard practice in online gaming. Now if only there were methods to make online co-op play for the campaigns in MCC good to play... I really love the campaigns and co-op is what I play the most... is what I would say if the co-op's netcode wasn't dogshit. I've recently been playing through the games slowly with a friend and we had to go on a fucking journey just to get Halo 2 to load (as well as having disconnects on Halo: CE) and even when loaded, it's still not the best. It sucks that the team responsible for MCC updates (I believe it was Splash Damage, but I know it's not 343 Industries) refuses to attempt to fix it as they say it'd be too big of a task for their small team. At least you multiplayer folk have some options.
Setting up Insignia through the Xemu emulator was a beotch, but once you get all the files and get it setup, it's a great time. I'd still recommend setting it up on an OG XBOX and playing that way since there can be missing textures and performance issues on the emu.
Thank you so much for the disclaimer at the beginning. I'm not a big part of the community or anything, but I know that it can be EXTREMELY frustrating when people join something with loads of documentation and demand to be spoonfed every detail. Number one rule of Linux: RTFM before asking. Chances are that if you're a beginner, your question has already been answered ad nauseum.
Before I even watched this video, I’ve been in that Halo server. I’ve never seen you in there, but I knew you were talking about the server as soon as I saw Pepper’s gamertag.
24:06 i genuinely kind of wished you mentioned RGH 3 being new though because its a whole lot easier to mod the console now (still need to solder a few wires), and you can read the nand with a pi pico which are really cheap
Super interesting and useful guide here! I’d like to try some of them out when I finally get some downtime. MCC has been good enough for me, even if it’s less than ideal in a lot of ways. Did just want to point out that online coop for all of the 360 era Halo games had the same coop latency you described on the MCC though. I was able to grin and bear it back in the day because the novelty of online campaign coop was wonderful as is, but once I got to CE Anniversary and the huge latency was still a thing, I gave up on online coop for those games lol
Honestly, i grew up with Halo from the early to mid 2000s starting with CE on my brother’s original Xbox, then spent a good portion of Halo 2 when we didn’t have Xbox Live. Halo 3 was good, ODST was a pure bliss, and Reach was a soft spot. Then 4 I remember I liked because it was 2012 and the time of gaming was just so new & kinda fresh. Then 5 was okay, I was never good at it but remember countless hours of playing Warzone Firefight. I’m glad Infinite made MP more easy and convenient for me and others and yeah I do agree that the sandbox needs to bring back that old school feel. But thankfully MCC is here to stay and be preserved.
8:27 You misplaced the "asinine control scheme" part and accidentally put it in the Halo PC section! In all seriousness, I love the default control scheme for Halo PC, only changes I make is to put crouch on shift, weapon switch on Q and zooming on the scroll wheel for MCC
This was a really informative video and I'll probably check out some of the different ways of playing that you mentioned. I played halo a lot growing up and picked it up again when MCC came to PC (to the extent that i've 100%ed the achievements). One of the downsides to the secondary options (and even to the MCC in reality) is that i live in OCE and its rare that i'm not playing on a US West server from Australia. Although it can be a bit tiresome, I can deal with the ping difference. Unfortunately though, my less dedicated friends aren't so forgiving and so it's difficult to get them involved in it. As much as I love Halo, unless a new classic-style halo game comes out (that isnt made by 343 please), It's probably not something that I'll put as much time into moving forward - because gaming is a social thing for me. On top of that, I just kinda want a new classic experience that I can get hyped about and look forward to with my mates. Anyway, apologies for the rant 😅
When you said the truth as casually as people say falsehoods in other videos, I smiled and gave a salute. Yes, Halo has always used projectiles, not just hitscan, even if those projectiles were crazy fast sometimes. THANK YOU. Earned yourself a sub.
The 1:49 comment isn’t exactly accurate these days. My girlfriend and I only play halo, specifically the odd game modes (Oddball, KoTH, etc.). We tend to find matches in the East US within 5 minutes. BTB matches take approx 7. This is at 8-9pm until 10-11pm local time on weekdays (as that’s the only time we have together to play). We also have similar luck on the weekends we spend playing during the day. So the MCC isn’t hard to get into matches for non Reach/3 games At least for East US.
"is cancelling 9 other people's games a dick move? Yeah. But so is deluting what is supposed to be a remaster of a game with your own designs that few like and fewer asked for" That is not the case. Ive been on enough forums to see the halo online, Halo Dorito, and console players praise these with the nay sayers resort to spamming the same topic to try abd drown out the players who supported it. Idk man.
I played a bit of h2 insignia via xemu when it first dropped. Good nostalgia kick, but unfortunately I stopped because it runs like such ass on xemu like you showed
24:37 Actually you dont need anymore specialized chips for moding MOST of xbox 360, just wires and a Raspeberry Pico. Yes, prescise soldering is still required, but its not than obnoxious than before.

I wish they still had the reach playlist where you just played the new big team Battle maps again in my opinion they don't come up enough in the map rotation I like that a lot more when it had its own playlist.
I am an OG Halo player from 2001. I know MCC isn't perfect but still happy it exists, I do miss Halo 3's ranking system (was a 5 Star General). While it may be unpopular to others I do like games like Halo 3 have additional maps and weapons, I never thought after Halo 3 on xbox 360 started dying I'd ever see my favorite halo 3 essentially get new weapons, maps and weapon skins. I feel like as things were just getting good 343 ended support no reach weapons skins or on consoles modded community maps.
As someone who will never get an Xbox console MCC is the primary way to go for me. I've also been interested in Eldewrito the moment I i saw its re-launch and I'm certainly going to look for someone hosting that crazy Ratchet & Clank mod
I haven't gotten to see the video yet, just perusing comments, but before my Eldewrito stopped working on my Steam Deck I also discovered there was a MediEvil game mod as well! (If it wasn't shown)
yo i might be trippin but i've always thought kasey sound like some 1, N i got it. Nigca tell me why kasey sound like a calm version of Marlton from post moon blowing up earth zombies in bo2😂anyways A1 channel g
MCC’s H3 hit detection is awful compared to the original game. Host advantage was crazy, but the lag compensation actually existed properly. You could knock shields off moving players canon to canon on Narrows with an AR. On the last day of H3 support I was in a match where I was trying to confirm if I was just misremembering the hit detection being better, and very quickly realized that if anything, I remembered it worse than it was. I could unscoped cross-map with the BR on Zanzibar and have my shots fairly reliably connect in a way they never would on MCC. Tommykost also has a video displaying this, moving, jumping, and falling players are hard to reg on. The lack of aggressive lag comp makes the bullets feel slower depending on lag, and the ping limit for a playable game is about half or less what it was on 360. Maybe if you live near a server or only play CGB it’s okay on MCC, but the game feels really terrible to me and has only been improved to a minor degree in this regard.
oh jeez i really wanna play that h2 on og xbox.. but im scared to plug it in ngl, its sitting around here for over 15 years and i diddnt touched it since
well, if you want it to not die you need to do something about it now, or it probably will. all but the very last run of Xboxes has a capacitor in it that is more or less guaranteed to leak and cause corrosion, and you need to open up your box and pull it out before it does. info here: consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:Clock_Capacitor
@@Kaceydotme so, since on PC an bios battery is mostly needed to operate normally, is it this aswell in the xbox ? need i have to replace it or is it enough to just remove it tho ? not even sure if i can get such old stuff here anymore actually lol.
@@semiramisubw4864 Unless you have the v1.6 Xbox (identification should be laid out in the link) you do not need to replace it. You just rip it out. The ONLY thing the cap did was run the clock when the system was unplugged.
From my experience halo 3 and reach big team and 4v4 slayer is always populated and the longest wait is 5mins for me. My problem is it’s full of sweats and you can’t relax unless you wanna get smoked.

troubled development and corporate greed is only 2/3 of the issues. the last one being incompetent game devs that would even refuse to hire the old guard and abused their relationships with the ones that remained (the announcer va, chief and cortana va) you know, the ones that hated halo? yeah microsoft wasnt responsible for that
IT BLOWS MY MIND THAT PEOPLE FORGET THAT NORMAL SPANKIN SLAYER WAS MEANT TO BE PLAYED 5v5 THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING IT
Yes! It irks me so much
No, it wasn't. Halo 3 had one playlist for 5v5 and that was it. Besides, why would BTB be 8v8 if regular is supposed to be 5v5?
@@LoremIpsum1919 Incorrect. Halo 3 social slayer was 5v5.
@@boolean64 5v5 social wasnt introduced until the very end of halo 3, and thats how it was left
Bungie didn't make the title update for Reach, they bailed after making the first map pack. 343 made TU1 and the dumb split playlists with different balancing.
That.. makes a lot of sense
Yup, literally the first thing 343 did with Halo was release a garbage remaster, and immediately follow that up by ruining Reach’s multiplayer.
Tbf, regarding the questionable cosmetics in Halo 3, there is an option to turn that off in the settings of MCC.
But then everyone is the default spartan
They could have just gave us good cosmetics
I really appreciate you going out of your way to ensure your audience does their research on services like these. It’s actually inspiring and I’ll work to incorporate this into my own video scripts, hopefully nearly as good as you :p
Phenomenal video. Seriously, a fantastic job well done ❤
Thanks! Always good to hear from you 💜
God, I miss when video games were fun. No battlepasses, no sneaky retention based matchmaking... what a time.
And no fucking haxors either on Xbox Only Halo Gaming. What a time, it was.
Idk last game I played on Xbox live was gears of war 1 🤣
I miss playing against other casuals. Seems like matchmaking in MCC. Is %95 super sweats

That's a pretty cold take, people have been asking to bring back lobbies for years. Myself included.
I prefer game campaings over multiplayer anyway
Yeah I agree I miss voting too
The more people talk about Insignia, the better. It's such an amazing service.
I guess so, but I'm not modding my console to use that.
Very glad I was able to play some H3 with you a few months ago! It was a bunch of fun!
"So, you beat the Halo demo. Not bad, soldier, not bad at all....
*BUT ARE YOU READY TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP???"*
Great video, the 360 days really were special in ways many people will never really know. I really do miss just how social it used to be
I'm in your video at 17:20 during Insignia part. Lets go GGs
What up FIG dawg?
Excellent video dude this does classic Halo so much

Oi
MCC is being abandoned by 343, I think most people would be happy to just have new community maps every few months (there are hundreds of community maps ready to go), but 4v4, BTB and Invasion still has community maps rotating from 2011 😕
map veto is also sorely missed
I host LANs in NorCal 2-3x a month! Halo CE/2/3/MCC/Infinite!
Nice! Do you have a website or discord or anything I can put in the sticky?
@@Kaceydotme I also run an ogx modding workshop out of the same place I host LANs!
This is amazing! Thank you Kacey! This is exactly the kind of content the Halo Community needs.
The title update ruined Halo reach, each BTB game became team snipers with how accurate the DMR is. Now if you poke your head out for 0.2 seconds you'l be cross mapped by 5 people
For a m&k player, mcc halo ce is actually the one with the least issues.
great video, in my case it is very difficult find games in the classic halo that are not 4v4 even in MCC
I love how you put balls as your message in halo 2. And I love your clan tag.
Greatly appreciate all of this - also this may be the only time I’ve heard someone call 343 “three forty-three”
Love your videos bro nice to see you uploading!
Hopefully we see a return to what made it great in the not too distant - and in the meantime, at least awesome modders (and their wider community, like you the video maker and us the viewers!) are keeping the OG games and their spirit alive!
pretty good video but some of your opinions on mcc are kinda silly to incorrect
love to hear what i'm incorrect about in MCC
@@someguy4957 my experience on Insignia, Kai, and H2V has been waayyyyy more even which is a huge part of why I prefer them
@@Kaceydotme @Kaceydotme
I might've misinterpreted you with CE sorry
But with halo 2 that's just the community in general, I've seen sweats on insignia, h2v, mcc, etc.
8:25 How dare you! I Love that control scheme! I still use it to this day.
Thank you so much for this vid it made me get into playing Halo Multiplayer and It’s campaign and I can now say I am a Halo Fan
I had heard very faintly of that scene but I should def add it to the resources, do you have a link?

Thanks for this video, you just got another player on Insignia. I had a modded Xbox and didn't even know this was a thing! thanks so much.
I still have fun playing classic halo with friends, just sometimes have to deal with sweats and toxic modern gamers
Damn Kacey has a *real* physical 360, that's really surprising for me to hear...;)

24:06 i genuinely kind of wished you mentioned RGH 3 being new though because its a whole lot easier to mod the console now (still need to solder a few wires), and you can read the nand with a pi pico which are really cheap
It’s still far beyond what the average person is comfortable doing themselves
@@Kaceydotme that is true, but im willing to argue it's at least more accessible now that you don't need a modchip anymore
14:53 Hi mom, I'm on TV
Game campaings > multiplayer
8:27 You misplaced the "asinine control scheme" part and accidentally put it in the Halo PC section! In all seriousness, I love the default control scheme for Halo PC, only changes I make is to put crouch on shift, weapon switch on Q and zooming on the scroll wheel for MCC
Bungie didn't update Halo Reach, 343 did.
Great Video! Hey got a question:
Why is my armor customization not being reflected in Halo Reach?
😁😁😁
So the MCC isn’t hard to get into matches for non Reach/3 games
At least for East US.
Halo 3 still holds up. It's a master piece.
"is cancelling 9 other people's games a dick move? Yeah. But so is deluting what is supposed to be a remaster of a game with your own designs that few like and fewer asked for"
That is not the case.
Gotta get yourself an OG Xbox. Not just for Halo 2, but the wide variety of really cool games like Mech Assault, Black, some older CoDs, etc.
@@TheVengefulVadam my next purchases are going to be a variety of older consoles :)
24:37 Actually you dont need anymore specialized chips for moding MOST of xbox 360, just wires and a Raspeberry Pico. Yes, prescise soldering is still required, but its not than obnoxious than before.

Mcc halo 2 is honestly the best way to play. Although it needs more playlists which I hope will happen when it gets ported to PlayStation.

Wdym just matchmake
Still easier to find matches in Halo than it is to find a match in any classic Gears of War game other than GoW3 on TDM.
Hoping that this video has the PC port of CE included 🤞
7:54 Hey, that map looks familiar!
Maybe if you live near a server or only play CGB it’s okay on MCC, but the game feels really terrible to me and has only been improved to a minor degree in this regard.

well, if you want it to not die you need to do something about it now, or it probably will. all but the very last run of Xboxes has a capacitor in it that is more or less guaranteed to leak and cause corrosion, and you need to open up your box and pull it out before it does. info here: consolemods.org/wiki/Xbox:Clock_Capacitor
