I'm an Art Director. I use stock photography in my work everyday. I always look for lifestyle photos with interesting lighting and ideally without any unrealistic treatment/filter. Conceptual photos could give me ideas, but most of the time when I send the purchase order - all of the photos have people in them.
I don’t know if you still read comments on older videos like this one, but I just needed to pop back here to say a great big THANK YOU 😊 thanks to this video, I found out about the Getty Contributor app, and thanks to your tips and assurances about being able to make it even as a very beginner, I finally found the courage to submit 6 sample photos to the Contributor app last night… and got an acceptance email this morning!! 😁🎉🎉❤️ I don’t know if I would’ve gotten to this point any time soon (or even ever) without your channel, so a million times over: THANK YOU! 😊 this little win and starting point has given me the confidence boost I’ve needed for years, and I’m more excited and hopeful than I’ve been in a VERY long while to make real strides in a lifetime of creative aspirations ❤

i have been a Getty exclusive for 14 years and have over 12K images online. i made a great income and retired. but everything changed over the past few years. the industry has died. regardless of how many photos i upload... yes i know what sells, my income declined. this is due to the stock sites screwing the contributors and all of the free photo sites. i now shoot architectural and weddings.
Have you ever tried to reverse image search your top purchased images to see if you could find the ads they’re used in? Sounds like a fun thing. Ps, discovered your channel yesterday and I already adore you!! You’re so awesome!

This was a very informative video for someone like me who is 1) planning to start shooting stock photos and videos, and 2) a certified introvert. I especially like the idea of using self-portraits. A question that has challenged me since starting out in stock photography - using images with friends/family in them because is there some sort of etiquette about paying them if an image sells (which realistically may be a rather small amount) or how to answer their concerns about how an image might be used that could embarrass/offend them? So far everything I have submitted is either a back view of people or they are too small in the frame to be recognisible.
I've been wondering about that too. I like taking pictures of interesting geology, which probably isn't a real popular subject for stock photography, but it also might be easier to stand out in a niche genre like that. What kind of science photos are you thinking of?
Just discovered your fantastic channel, Laura. I found your video very interesting. You are absolutely right in saying that people's pictures sell. One question: am I right in thinking that to shoot models, you really need an Employer's Liability in the UK? Also, when it comes to indoor model shoot, where do you do it? Do you hire a studio? I would be very hesitant to bring strangers into my home, especially a female model. My friend and family love their privacy and have no desire to appear in a commercial or a billboard!! BTW, I'm a regular contributor to S Shutterstock and Adobestock.
Thank you so much! I'm glad you like my channel! 😊 As a freelance photographer, I do have insurance that covers liability. It's not mandatory but as everything, is better to have it in case something happen to the model while you're shooting. For example, a backdrop stand falls over her/his head or something like that. Nothing ever happened to me but better be safe than sorry. Regarding indoor photoshoots, I do shoot in my home photography studio. I'm very carful though. Most of my clients are people that come for worth of mouth which means that I can trust them more. They're friends of friends or professionals. However, if I have to shoot with a total stranger, I would hire a studio for a couple of hours. Better be always safe and comfortable just in case. 😊

Hi Vincent! So many questions! 😄 Yes, Offset images is part of Shutterstock images. It’s the macrostock version, where we get paid way more for every photo. It’s quite hard to enter because they’re very selective. You have to send your portfolio and also some photos for submission that they have to review first. But it is possible. :) They don’t accept editorial photos, just for commercial use. What I like about Offset is that you can upload photos exclusively for them but you can also upload in a non-exclusive basis which means that you can upload the same photos to different platforms. I hope that gave you a better insight Vincent! 😊

Hahaha 😂 I’m glad it made you laugh! :) I have some pictures in Alamy and so far I never sold any photo there. But it all depends on the galleries and type of pictures. For micro stock I really like Adobe Stock. 😊
How are you uploading pictures to all those different stock sites if some of them require exclusivity? Just wondering. I want to diversify the sites I upload too, but wondering how when some are exclusive.
Hi Nelly! Yes, everyone can sell their own photos as an individual. You would have to be responsible of declaring the earnings for tax purposes, that’s all. 😊
Hi Demis! I do show all my figures picture per picture in my private community. But it depends. Some pictures are sold for $0.5, some for $10, some for $65… That’s why is good to keep uploading in the galleries. In Getty Images I get a mix of all prices. But some quite high. Never tried Wirestock but I’m tempted as I wouldn’t have to do the key-wording myself. Time consuming indeed. 😅

The problem is that people in my country are very impolite, unwelcoming and aggressive! I was stopped and screamed at three times today just for wanting to shoot a pair of shoes, some fruits in the market and even the police stopped me from shooting a photo of the police station! Unfortunately It's very difficult to show everyday life in my country because people are very closed and backward! I am still thinking how to solve this problem but still got nothing! Anyone has any ideas?
Omg this is crazy! Where do you live? I totally get you as I feel so bad when someone tells me off because I’m taking photos. 🤦🏻♀️ The best way you can do is just smile and ask permission before as sometimes people don’t like when we do it without asking. Even though in public spaces is totally legal. 🙏🏼
@@LauraBC I am kinda anonymous on youtube so I don't want to say where I live but yeah everytime I go out taking photos I get nervous and sweaty cause I don't know who is going to scream at me next! I have tried asking but most of the time it just doesn't work! Plus it's the pandemic and I don't want to talk or get close to people but people in my country don't believe the pandemic exists! They consider it a hoax! Nature photos and videos I can shoot loads without getting much disturbed but they don't sell apparently...! I am thinking maybe if I become much faster in using the camera... get in and get out like a ninja! I must practice my camera Kungfu...

In over 14 years, I’ve never shot in jpeg. 😄 Always RAW. When processing the photos and uploading to stock, I convert them to jpeg as requested by the websites. Sometimes they also ask to convert them to sRGB profile. I hope this helps. 😊

Do you think it's bad right now to just upload AI images to Adobe Stock and photos taken by me to Shutterstock?
I ask you this because Shuterstock has the option for editorial images and Adobe Stock doesn't have that option.

Hahaha 😂 I’m glad it made you laugh! :) I have some pictures in Alamy and so far I never sold any photo there. But it all depends on the galleries and type of pictures. For micro stock I really like Adobe Stock. 😊

Hi Nelly! Yes, everyone can sell their own photos as an individual. You would have to be responsible of declaring the earnings for tax purposes, that’s all. 😊
But usually how much would they pay for 1 pic? I am uploading on wirestock and sometimes they pay me 0.09 USD per picture. It’s really depressing!
Hi Demis! I do show all my figures picture per picture in my private community. But it depends. Some pictures are sold for $0.5, some for $10, some for $65… That’s why is good to keep uploading in the galleries. In Getty Images I get a mix of all prices. But some quite high. Never tried Wirestock but I’m tempted as I wouldn’t have to do the key-wording myself. Time consuming indeed. 😅
@@LauraBC thank you for your reply! I will try Getty images as well, because I feel they pay too little at wirestock. But it might be the same at Getty, depending on the pictures. Anyway, at wirestock I never got more than 4 USD.

The problem is that people in my country are very impolite, unwelcoming and aggressive! I was stopped and screamed at three times today just for wanting to shoot a pair of shoes, some fruits in the market and even the police stopped me from shooting a photo of the police station! Unfortunately It's very difficult to show everyday life in my country because people are very closed and backward! I am still thinking how to solve this problem but still got nothing! Anyone has any ideas?
Omg this is crazy! Where do you live? I totally get you as I feel so bad when someone tells me off because I’m taking photos. 🤦🏻♀️ The best way you can do is just smile and ask permission before as sometimes people don’t like when we do it without asking. Even though in public spaces is totally legal. 🙏🏼

@@LauraBC I am kinda anonymous on youtube so I don't want to say where I live but yeah everytime I go out taking photos I get nervous and sweaty cause I don't know who is going to scream at me next! I have tried asking but most of the time it just doesn't work! Plus it's the pandemic and I don't want to talk or get close to people but people in my country don't believe the pandemic exists! They consider it a hoax! Nature photos and videos I can shoot loads without getting much disturbed but they don't sell apparently...! I am thinking maybe if I become much faster in using the camera... get in and get out like a ninja! I must practice my camera Kungfu...

Did you shoot these photos in raw?
In over 14 years, I’ve never shot in jpeg. 😄 Always RAW. When processing the photos and uploading to stock, I convert them to jpeg as requested by the websites. Sometimes they also ask to convert them to sRGB profile. I hope this helps. 😊
