Been here twice: 1974 with the parents by car, and with my older daughter in 2005 (again by car). Had a 1973 Norton 750 S bike but didn't want to do 1974 by myself. (in hindsight, what a stupid decision not to!). I've been thru the Alps, Canadian Rockies and Colorado Rockies, but I don't think I've ever seen more concentrated mountain beauty than I have driving the Going-to-the-Sun road: to say it's majestic is a gross understatement! I especially value my memories of the awe on my daughter's face when she saw this for the first time. if you ever get the chance to visit, it will be worth the time and effort to get there!!! The entire park is amazing, but this drive transcends even that; also, visit Waterton Lakes NP on the Canadian side; it's a stunning place in it's own right, and just adjacent to the north.

Glacier and Waterton Parks are very beautiful. When I visit the parks I feel blessed and lucky to be alive. I introduced my oldest daughter to Glacier on a camping trip in the car and we continued north through Banff and on up to the Iceland Parkway near Jasper. The mountains continue getting bigger and bigger and more majestic up in Canada. I met a fellow traveling motorcyclist near Calgary a few years ago who had ridden all the way to Alaska and was returning home to West Virginia. He said after riding nearly the entire length of the rocky mountains he was looking forward to seeing the great planes and doing some straight lines. He'd had enough of mountains and wanted to shoot on home. The rolling grass lands east of Glacier are beautiful too.

Breathtaking. Thanks for sharing this epic ride with us. Anxious to cover this on the bike sooner than later. Traveled the pass as a teenager on a family vacation, and had a chance to visit GNP again a month or so ago. Going to the Sun was closed still due to complications they were having with snow removal. I’m really looking forward to the east side of the park that seems a bit more quiet then take that ride north, which you shared. Can’t wait for your next video!

Fires are common in Idaho but this past summer the smoke was intense all the way up into Canada. Lots of people migrating to Idaho. Lower elevations should be fine. However, the pass may still be closed on the Going to the Sun Road. There is a web location that provides updates on the snow plowing on the road. Google Going to the Sun Road Snow Plowing. The plows normally have the road cleared around mid June. Not sure what the story is this year. Otherwise, June is nice in Montana. Great video. I'll be out that way for the BMWMOA Rally in June and plan on riding that road.. . Couple of questions: What time of the year did you do your ride? Looks like late summer. What day of the week and what time of day? Did you travel East to West or West to East?. Thanks for posting. Joe

I believe that trip to Glacier was in late August or Early September on a Friday or Saturday around mid day. I've done both directions. I prefer the west to east direction. However, east to west is excellent as well, particularly as you climb to the summit. Enjoy the trip in June. Thanks for watching and posting the comment.

I tried to get to glacier as of now October 10th 2019, and unfortunately is too late.
It’s too cold and frigid weather, it was like a dream to get over there, rode all the way from NYC and got stucked in Wyoming because of the cold.
When would you think it would be the best time to visit it? In a motorcycle of course
    Great documentary and information,

Cold weather is arriving early this year in the Wyoming-Montana region. Your best chances of avoiding bad weather in Glacier Park are in July, August and September. June is nice however the Going to the Sun Road may be closed near the top due to snowpack. Sorry to hear you were unable to reach the park this year. Thanks for watching the video and posting the comment.

recent years glacier is always covered with the haze/smoke from the forest fire from canada or oregon even california, otherwise it would be more spectacular.

I had been using an SJCAM4000 but now I use the GoPro Hero 7 Black for the riding shots in my videos. The GoPro anti-vibration feature works well. Thanks for watching and posting the comment.

I recommend checking out this Glacier Park link in the spring: www.nps.gov/applications/glac/gttsroadplow/gttsroadplowstatus.cfm
The site will have all of the details on snow plowing and how much of the road may be open. I suspect the plows will be busy in early June. Thanks for watching the video and enjoy your visit to Glacier Park.

I know how that feels... thought you gonna see the spectacular views but ends up all the way up from California are hazed/fogged. That's what I got from 14', same 17'.

    • @WheelStories
      @WheelStories  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm normally traveling alone when making the videos or taking the long distance trips. Riding with me would be frustrating if you're not interested in the video production. I don't mind traveling alone. You can set your own pace and change plans in the middle of the ride. But over the years I have made many trips with my wife and a few riding buddies.

@@WheelStories I know what your saying. I got a couple buddies that it has to be their way or the highway. In 2017 we took a trip back east that we had planned for a year 4 couples my three buddies and I all work at UPS and have known each other for 20 years or more and we all live in Kansas but about 2 days into the 8 day trip one buddie and his wife decide oh were not gonna continue on were gonna do something different and they were the ones that mainly planned the trip. Needles to say we were all just kind of shocked but whatever. My wife and I are off the first two weeks of August and were wanting to ride somewhere beautiful like your video but also somewhere where we can stay a few days and ride places and come back to the hotel and also do some hiking like you were doing. Can you reccomend some places like that and if we do go to Glacier is there somewhere remote we can stay in a tent or hotel? You can email me if you like or put it on here or if you don't have time I understand and no big deal. moverfelt4589@gmail.com thanks and be safe out there.

In regard to trip recommendations, I'm not too familiar with Colorado but I suspect there are some good options for camping and riding in the Rockies. Not too far from Kansas. Yellowstone is scenic but riding in the park is slow going. I've not camped in Yellowstone but have spent nights in Cody, Wyoming, West Yellowstone, Montana and Driggs, Idaho. There are no cheap lodging options near Jackson Hole. It's beautiful and expensive in Jackson. North of Yellowstone there is Red Lodge in Montana near the Beartooth pass. Dramatic mountain road. As for Glacier, I like staying at the KOA campground on the east side of the park near St. Mary's. It's a bit pricey for a campground but there is a pool, electrical hookups, a small convenience store and the scenery is great. There are some motels nearby as well but I don't know much about them. I recommend doing some research on-line. The hotels inside of the park are normally booked well in advance. Good luck with your ride. Should be fun.

@@WheelStories thanks for taking the time to write me back. We've been to Estes Park and the Rocky Mountain national park a few times there's not a lot of roads to ride on but tons of beautiful hikes and places to camp if you ever go there there's an 11 or 12 mile one way road that takes you to the top that has lots of switchbacks and places to stop and take pictures it is dirt and gravel but pretty easy to ride up I cant remember the name of it but if you ask one of the rangers they will tell you how to get to it it use to be kind of a secret. Thanks for the recommendations and the heads up on the slow riding through Glacier. We don't mind camping a few nights but not every night so I'm gonna have to get online like you said and check availability if any and prices. Thanks again and be safe out there.

I actually rode up from lake mcdonald lodge to the loop yesterday on my mountain bike (th-cam.com/video/02c4d5JsU24/w-d-xo.html) - super interesting to see the differences between the two. Why doesn't Amtrak provide a way for us much farther East to travel there by train, and MC. I'll tell you why, it's a government funded scam. If it was a for profit operation they would cater to the tourist, to include the MC tourist. However, since it's a government operation, it exists primarily for the benefit of the government bureaucrats who are involved in its operation.
