Their resilience has brought them this far but they need a Dragon onboard to turn things around...

They did pretty well after the show. Their sales increased after the episode was broadcasted. They got into Waitrose and got multiple investments.
The company was acquired by a food company but they still work on the product and continue to grow the brand.
Then why am i reading that they went under administration and got sold?

It's all a load of horlicks, now harrods everyone laying staff off,, mind you I can understand that, three year's ago in harrods unable to buy the 25 grand solid gold fountain pen, I took a look at the store and staff itself, never seen a center of commerce(you can't call it a shop that's crass in this case) with more staff in any department than customer's, now macdonalds similar area totally understaffed, and we wonder about investment,, it's definitely horlicks,

I was recently in the UK for a weekend for some business and I had lunch at a pub, they had some of these on my plate.
These crisps were so good I asked the owner what they were so I could buy some more.

Yup, the biggest issue is the (%) of equity they have (75%), had they retained the same debt load, but owned 100% if the business then peter and Duncan could shoot at 20% each .

Piers is the most spineless “dragon” in the den. I can’t think of a single time he made an offer when everyone else didn’t, or when the pitch was heavily criticized. The minute he senses skepticism from the other dragons he backs out of the deal, even in areas he should be the SME
Kelly ‘Goldilocks’ Hoppin is by far the worst Dragon ever to appear on this show. She rips into each Pitch, using terms already used by other Dragons. She never invests or will try a 50% offer only because she has not got the business acumen to succeed in anything beyond what she must have tripped over in an earlier business, to end up on this show.
Not true. He is much better than Sarah Willingham who takes it by a mile.
At least Duncan gave them a chance , he showed he had a heart and saw the determination and how hard theyd work they've put into this business. Too bad no one else wanted to partner, and Duncan had to make the decision he did.
Duncan is 100% the guy who everyone thinks is a mean assholes and it's only when he dies, we learn he's spent 30 years feeding poor families or sending kids to school or something.
Gut feeling is Duncan is a truly good person with a mean guy persona.

The company dissolved after liquidation in 2017 with £240,000 of debt. I actually feel quite sorry for them.

So many entrepreneurs think people want healthy crisps and chocolate. They don't. People living healthier lifestyles are not looking for slightly better alternatives to unhealthy snacks.
Chips are terrible for you, period. Including these. The only healthy alternative is to not eat them.
They position wrong. I'm not trying to lose weight but I don't like the empty calories of potato crisps and milk/sugar chocolate. Snack foods that taste just as good with the same macros but better micros are always something I'm after.
Sorry but i cant go past this person bashing chocolate. You are largely wrong here. As indeed any sugar packed product is harmfull, but dark chocolate with 70% of cocao and up is actually really good for you. Same with any food. Things are not simply good or bad. It depends.

@@KJ_2020 Okay, well, cocoa is packed with micronutrients, antioxidants and such. All of which help to maintain brain function, balanced cholesterol levels and much more. Except in cheap chocolate products any benefit of cocoa is offset by large amounts of sugar and surogate oils.
Most studies considering chocolate use, utilised around 50grams of 70% chocolate a day, so its probably safe to say that half a bar of dark chocholate a day, can suit any diet.
Duncan was looking at the bigger picture behind the business. £37,500 to help a family of five.

Most of the entrepreneurs that come into the den are facing serious financial hardships to follow their dreams. But these two took the approach to NOT hide their fears and worries. It almost worked. But I think they were better off showing some more energy. They looked defeated and without passion despite their words. Investors are not looking to offer 'lifelines' on a sinking ship. They want to know their operating partners are executing and making sound business decisions not clouded by the obvious distractions on their faces.
How fitting to have Jenny at the end of this saying IM OUT lol

Smith's crisps, market leaders in the 80's spent tens of millions on advertising. Soon as they stopped advertising they went under
Walkers don't advertise much and they are the leaders now
Smiths didnt go under, they were bought by Pepsico at the same time they bought Walkers. Not sure how much for, but combined total was $1.35B, this was still at a time when Smiths had greater annual sales than Walkers.
The Smiths brand is still used for a handful of products
What a shame about their financial situation because their product and their business actually looked like a good one.
From other comments, it sounds like they succeeded in the end.

the dragons drop the ball a lot. this was a great product with honest passionate people behind it. they were very forthcoming with their debt. i would've invested
You would have, but there would have also been a good chance that you would have lost all your money. There is a fine line to walk between doing the nice thing and doing the financially sound thing. If you just invested in businesses purely because you thought the owners were good people, you'd quickly find yourself in a similar financial situation to the couple shown here. Sometimes passion and honestly simply isn't enough.

He was certainly better at coming up with excuses than his successors, but he only secured one deal lol.

It isn't about the amount of money they have. They are writing down information which can be used in specific business formulas that will tell them how strong the investment is or could be.
I guess that`s why he is the richest one. He knows when not to invest. This is not charity.

Still going, although they went into administration & had to be saved-they stayed on working for the new owners. Only shop you seem to be able to get them from is Holland & Barrett.

Speaking generally, and without going into any long-winded details, in the UK, *companies* go into administration (or liquidation), *individuals* are declared bankrupt ... slightly different usage in the US, I know.
@@B_Bodziak administration is Directors get replaced with an appointed person (normally), and there is a talk with all Creditors to agree lower requirements, or spread out payments, and in the meantime Creditors are not allowed to come after you for money. This is in an aim to allow the company to continue if possible. The company is also advised for new Buyers etc.

Walkers cheese and onion will take some beating. They are the best crisps.
The show ended up being great advertising for them. Their products became quite popular, Waitrose started stocking them, and they received a large investment from another investor. They kept working at it until 2016, when they got bought by a large snack manufacturer. So a happy ending, fortunately.
I think a lot of entrepreneurs go on the show for the exposure as well as to get a dragon on board.

He was probably determining just how debt they had and when they owed it back and figured the money they were asking for was just to get them out of debt.

I skipped some of this as I watched it already but I just had a thought. If the process used in making the product can be patented then they would of been better off letting the big boys use the patents and paying them royalties.
