40yrs on, is it still fun? - Vintage RC in 4k [Ep1] - Tamiya Holiday Buggy - Stay at Home

  • So here the first of a few videos showcasing some of my Vintage/Old School RC Cars.
    The Tamiya Holiday Buggy was introduced in 1980, and back then these Kits cost a similar price to what they cost today, so back in the 80's that was a lot of money!
    The Holiday Buggy has an original chassis and body, but had been upgraded with new electronics, and a 380 Sport tuned motor (not easy to get hold of). Running a 1500 mah Li-ion in this video, it runs very nice. Note, I'm using the original Acoms Techniplus radio system...
    Speed runing an old RC Car is pretty interesting, with the modern electronics and better motor this actually produced a pretty good top speed!

    That was excellent Phil. I love the fact that you actually ran it, and I mean RAN IT. I was grinning to myself imagining the mild heart attacks being had by all the Tamiya purists screaming "Shelf it you Barbarian" lol. Especially when you drove it over the rougher terrain. Even I had my fingers crossed that the front shock brackets didn't break. Although my sentiments were more financial than collectors paranoia hahaha. The other thing I was impressed with was how low you got with the stick tranny while running and filming the clips at the end. Great footage but I bet you looked hilarious. I request a static camera shot of you doing this next time mate lol. Big thumbs up my friend. Absolutely loved this 😄👍🏻👍🏻

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I can assure you it was hard work getting them shots haha.... glad you noticed , the static shots will be burnt and never published haha. "Shell it you Barbarian"... I can imagine some of the muttering going on! The little 380 Sport Motor and Li-ion certainly gave this a good boost of power! You'll be pleased to know I stripped the gearbox down, removed all the sand and dirt, added a bit of 'dry' oil and then put it back together ready for another day... Stay safe mate

    I was 19 back in in 81 when the Holiday buggy came out and I got one after seeing seeing the videos in the model shop. I'm 58 now and I've bought a re release one that I've modded up with oil filled shocks, ball races, and brushless motor. It out out drags my mates Arrma typhon. Just recently got back into the cars after years of flying planes and helicopters.

    The Holiday Buggy was my first car...being born in 76.....I think I was about 8 when my dad took me to the model shop for Christmas. I only got rid of it from the loft....sold at a car boot sale about 10 years ago.

    Absolute proof that you don't need the latest 50+ mph LiPo-powered speed machine to have fun! Yes, it is bouncy but it still goes well on most terrain. I have owned a Holiday Buggy since the 1980's and always found it drove best on the beach where the surface was more forgiving on the suspension. My vintage machine still uses all the original Acoms electronics and the Tamiya 6V Ni-Cd battery that was bought with the kit 40 years ago. You can see the start of my restoration project on my channel, BlackSeaRC.

    My first Rc car. Got nostalgic a few years ago and bought the re release which isn’t quite the same but the new chassis is better. Hoping Tamiya are going re release the Honda City Turbo again as I missed it second time round

      The Holiday Buggy was also my first RC car that I enjoyed for many years despite the obvious performance limitations. I must confess that I am not a fan of the 2010 version though. My original buggy still operates and you can find it on my channel if you are interested.

    Some great shots there mate👍👍i was never really a fan of the holiday buggy back in the day but one came up on Ebay few years back it was in a bit of a state🤣 but I was in need of a project so put a cheeky bid in and won. I grew to love its simplicity and the looks of it and ended up getting it's sister the sand rover.. I've restored the holiday buggy to mint and in the process of doing the same to the rover with enough parts to have a runner..

    It looks like the suspension actually works pretty well, it just has no travel at all and relies on the big soft tires to take up the big bumps and jumps. The army here in the mid 30s was trying to come up with a Jeep type vehicle and the proving ground had some leftover Austin mini cars they had tested so they built a basically sled with wheels, a motor, machine gun, and no suspension out of the leftovers. At the time it would bounce over most terrain and the driver and passenger laid down on it to drive it. They called it the belly flopper. I guess it relied on the tires to take some of the big hits too. I read about it in the book Indestructible Jeep, which was actually originally published in England so local to you. My original RC 10 has very nice oil shocks and lands like a sponge. They certainly made some major upgrades quickly as things progressed

      @@TomleyRC I THINK the book was published by Avalon books but I got it years ago just before I finally got myself a real Jeep. auto.howstuffworks.com/1906-1939-jeep2.htm www.amazon.com/Indestructible-jeep-Ballantines-illustrated-century/dp/B0006W05IE There are some links to the story of the Flopper and a link to buy my old book.

      The Re-Re would certainly handle better than this one at speed... but nothing beats a good classic chassis. Staying as safe as we can Jon.... I'm still working, but keeping my distance from others!

    Do I want to see more? YOU BET! Phil, that was a piece of Tamiya heaven for me - the footage you got was better than the Tamiya promo! I bet you knew what I was thinking when you were talking about using the old school transmitter! I still use mine exclusively on my Tamiyas! Good point about the lower speeds still being fun, especially with the "funky" handling, but then that is the charm of these old buggies. Top job, dude, top job! :)

    Oh wow thanks for posting this. So many happy memories. This was my first Tamiya RC back in about 1981. I loved it although it did break quite a lot. I've had the re-re and it's a shame that the DT-02 is too wide to give it that scale look and also came with awful wheels. Be great if Tamiya did a modern reliable chassis with the same proportions as this and Sand Rover. Anyway it does still look like a load of fun after all these years ! :-)

    • @TomleyRC
      @TomleyRC  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Pete, the Re-Re doesn't have the same flare does it... shame! The re done the Sand Scorcher on it's original chassis... so don't know why they chose not to with these

    • @PeteWylieRC
      @PeteWylieRC 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TomleyRC well I think that the old one was just a bit too easy to break but like I say I'm sure they could have come up with something to that fitted the body better than the DT-02. Maybe one day there will be the Holiday Buggy re-re-release!
