Originally, Russell Chase was supposed to be rejected due to his alcoholism, and when everybody had used their missiles, he showed up in his cropduster with a missile strapped to it already knowing he would have to crash his plane into the aliens' main weapon to stop it. In test screenings the sight of Russell's rickety old biplane keeping pace with the jet fighters as they protected him during his final attack looked so ridiculous that people laughed (you can find that version on TH-cam though, because it wasn't used in the final film, the special effects weren't completed), so it was changed to the version you see now. An added benefit of the change is that you see Russell when he makes the decision to sacrifice himself and getting the courage to do it when he looks at the photo of his children.
Felt so good to have Russell Casse come to the rescue, after having him dissed by his son for being drunk and also for having him dissed for telling people he'd been abducted.
The audience also reacted negatively to the thought of planned self-termination, so they made it spontaneous. The funny thing is they didn't reshoot the scene. Since they used CGI to create the biplane, all they did was substitute and F/A-18 instead. That explains the odd way it flies for a jet fighter.
It is like this movie 🎬 was predicting the Chris Rock incident the same way people say Back To The Future predicts 9-11 (The firey streaks left behind when Marty goes back to 1985. They are shown along with the store sign in that scene the is shaped like the Number 9.).
The president’s speech will always give me chills. I hope you ended up appreciating him a bit more by the end of the movie. I felt he was kinda like a “modern” presidential type figure. Not the classic type of president we’d seen in the past. He was cool but still didn’t take any crap from anyone.

This movie launched Will Smith's acting career to the moon. He was BIG after this. I remember watching this during my town pass, It came out the weekend of my Basic Training graduation. I'm not sure how much press there was leading up to it since I was in basic but I know all during Tech School people were talking about it. 90s Will Smith was a juggernaut. This, Men In Black, Bad Boys... he was killing it. He could have been killing it even more if he hadn't turned down starring in The Matrix to make Wild Wild West. To this day he wishes he could take back that decision.
The officer who shot the alien at Area 51 is played by Adam Baldwin, who has a considerable presence in science fiction. He was also in "Predator 2," "Control Factor, "Digital Man," and "Serenity." In science fiction TV he was in "Firefly" "Chuck," and "The Last Ship " These are in addition to many non sci-fi projects. He wasn't a good guy in "The Patriot."

It's funny how when they launch the first nuke, they have the bomber quickly approaching the alien ship and the President has to hurry and give the OK. It's rather ridiculous, because they could've and would've launched the nuke from a hundred miles away. It wasn't necessary to get anywhere near that close.

There was a theory that President Whitmore was an image of the Bill Clinton everyone wished he was (he was a combat veteran to contrast to accusations that Clinton was a draft dodger, they were both younger (boomer aged) presidents, both had popularity problems, etc). One aspect of this was, with the unpopularity of Hillary Clinton, the First Lady in the movie was killed to remove her from the minds of voting viewers. I’m not saying there’s any truth to this theory, but it’s an interesting insight into thought processes in the mid 90s. If nothing else, boomer was a compliment from the liberal youth unlike today.

I remember hearing different stories of reactions to the destruction of the White House: some claimed the theater broke out in applause (supposedly due to the unpopularity of the Clintons), others talked about stunned silence. Looking at the environment of the day, with the 1994 elections just completed (with all of the vitriol around the Gingrich led congress), I’d be very surprised if Hollywood would make a movie at that time with a sympathetic, heroic Republican unless it was obvious he was a” McCain” type who butted heads with the “crusty old” Republicans. With politics having, in general, moved left since the 90s, I can see where Whitmore would seem to be a Republican. My guess (if the theory I mentioned is true) is that, because the country seemed to be moving to the right at that time, they would make Whitmore a solid centrist (which he was in mid 90s politics) to try to imply Clinton was one too.

I went to see this in the theater ON the Fourth of July, and it was so much fun. Everyone in the theater was cheering and clapping, and it was such a cool experience!

It's so sad that everyone shits on Will Smith now when it's blatantly obvious he's a broken man.
29:29 this movie came out during the 1996 presidential election. There was a theory that President Whitmore was an image of the Bill Clinton everyone wished he was (he was a combat veteran to contrast to accusations that Clinton was a draft dodger, they were both younger (boomer aged) presidents, both had popularity problems, etc). One aspect of this was, with the unpopularity of Hillary Clinton, the First Lady in the movie was killed to remove her from the minds of voting viewers. I’m not saying there’s any truth to this theory, but it’s an interesting insight into thought processes in the mid 90s. If nothing else, boomer was a compliment from the liberal youth unlike today.

@@hv3926there were several theories floating around about how this movie fit into politics of the day. I remember hearing different stories of reactions to the destruction of the White House: some claimed the theater broke out in applause (supposedly due to the unpopularity of the Clintons), others talked about stunned silence. Looking at the environment of the day, with the 1994 elections just completed (with all of the vitriol around the Gingrich led congress), I’d be very surprised if Hollywood would make a movie at that time with a sympathetic, heroic Republican unless it was obvious he was a” McCain” type who butted heads with the “crusty old” Republicans. With politics having, in general, moved left since the 90s, I can see where Whitmore would seem to be a Republican. My guess (if the theory I mentioned is true) is that, because the country seemed to be moving to the right at that time, they would make Whitmore a solid centrist (which he was in mid 90s politics) to try to imply Clinton was one too.

From the way people react to flying to the invasion, to using human programming in their system after flying up there without trouble, to characters getting close to the president so easily even during an Earth-changing event, etc. It was all very funny. It's not as funny as Armageddon, but it's on the list.

@@cshubs Interesting. None of those things were issues to me except the software compatibility, and that was resolved when someone pointed out that they'd mentioned that the roots of much of modern tech came out of discoveries with the Roswell craft. 🤷♂
