SS14 diode specification is: 28V in RMS, blocking and peak reverse voltage is max 40V. So why it got shorted at 12V? Maybe the car alternator is shot too high voltage spikes?
You should also check if the device can work at 14.10V.
(when the car is off, then the radio and "12v" lighter plug has battery voltage, but when the car is running, then radio and the lighter plug has often the alternator voltage which it is 14.10V)

So this diode is not connected to ground on one side but connected to power rail on both ends
