One can clearly what Diana possessed to place her out front of all the great Motown ladies, her 2 lovely partners, Gladys Horton, Wanda Rogers and Martha Reeves. The on air PR she provided, that little kiss she gives Ed Sullivan, timing AND talent all wrapped up into one slender girl.
Also, in her defense, the musical structure of this song, with the same instrumental phrases done over and over would make it difficult for most (including me) to be able to do this from memory. Also, this song, lyrically does not tell a story; it's just a song of many verses of adulation which could be sung in any order. My comment and observation is not to dismiss the beauty of the beautiful song. Another song of Diana's which is very similar (in that the words can be difficult to place in proper order), is "My Turn."
The MAIN reason for the forgetting the lyrics of the is song is that there is the CONSTANT repetition of the melody that only changes in the key signature. A very hard song to remember the lyrics, indeed!

This is fantastic. I remember when girls wore lipstick that matched their jewelry and clothes. It was such a 60s thing ... and I think so sexy. Happy memories!
The whole history of the Supremes actually occurs in the few seconds they cut out of the end of this performance. As they step forward to speak to Sullivan, Diana and Flo try to step into the same space (next to Ed) - but Mary maneuvers Ross into that spot and then moves herself over as Flo steps into the middle. The energy in this performance is amazing. The music seems to overpower Diana at times but her sheer willpower becomes evident as she pulls it out of herself by the end of the medley. And the girls - picked up fine on an overhead mic - sound great: we really missed Flo's vocal muscle in the background when she "left." If you were lucky enough to live through this era, you know how great the Supremes actually were.
It must have been so great to be a record buyer in the '60s. Not knowing what future classic would be released next. The big problem would be having enough money to purchase them all. I'd definitely be saving enough money to buy and add the Supremes' and their fellow Motown artists' 45s and LPs to my vinyl collection. Thank goodness I grew up with my dad's records! He would have been 20 when this performance aired. Long live the '60s, and long live the Supremes! ❤

Diana Ross had a sound all to herself, and if it wasn't for that, I wouldn't know who Mary or Florence ever was or Cindy later, who each were special too. However, Diana had a strong voice but a way of caressing the notes and interpreting the music soulfully, without making it out of a narrow R&B version, but had the ability to integrate the various versions of R&B and make a commercial sound that made the Supremes cross over big time, as well as create a sound for herself of how black music could be marketed. This is why Berry Gordy and the Motown execs got it right. 😮 So she could challenge, white women and Black women artists, and they cannot touch her, for she can sing in the middle and they can't. That's why the Supremes were only second to the Beatles and Elvis and could rival them. That's why Diana Ross got a lot of jealousy hate from from a lot of black and white people respectively, just like Whitney, for not being really black enough, but also also able to out do their white counterparts, respectively for their period. Had they not been successful, they wouldn't have gotten this criticism.
Flo got drunk, gained weight, and couldn't fit the gowns. Why did Mary stay? Cause she was smart Flo was her own worst enemy and stuck on stupid .
Please pardon my ignorance .... but if Flo and Mary are actually singing then are their microphones positioned overhead out of the camera shot but still effectively catching their voices for adequate sound mixing ?
Medleys are always cheesy, and this is no exception. Yet that special sound they had, and the show case of Holland-Dozier-Holland hits by one of the handful of greatest song writers ever (and most underrated) comes very close to redeeming this performance.
@@sheilamacdougal4874 My difficulty is that I know you’re entitled to your opinion…But someone without ANY talent at all to call the Supreme’s medley cheesy is derogatory and unnecessary!
@@jduwayne1 Whether I have any talent or not is entirely irrelevant to the veracity of my comment, but how the hell do you know whether I have any talent? As for my comment, it is about the form: a cheesy medley. Absolutely nothing to do with the talent of the group. If you're not intelligent enough to follow a simple point, nobody is forcing you to shoot your mouth off.
I can’t believe Diana Ross gave Ed Sullivan a kiss at the end but I think it’s great that she did. I am not a Diana Ross fan but he complimented the ladies and I think it was nice that she gave him that kiss. I don’t know if anyone ever gave Ed Sullivan a kiss on his show!! Wow!
It was a crap shoot. Sometimes all three sang live. Or if Flo, Cindy and Mary were live, they were either on standing mics, or were on the overhead mic to pull them behind the lead vocal. Or, Mary Flo and Cindy pre-recorded their vocals and they were added to the backing audio track. Sometimes all three lip synched to a track they all prerecorded for the show. Or on rare occasions they'd all just mouth the actual record (LoveChild). You can sometimes tell by listening to the acoustics who is live and who might not be. It sounds like Flo and Mary are live on the boom mic here, but I can't truly be sure.
@@artjr1971 I think in this case they are def live since they almost overpower Diana. The audio is all over the map. Could be one of those instances like Mary wrote about in her book that during rehearsals she and Flo sang softer so when they were live they could be heard.
I was wondering if it was shaking because someone had just placed it there. It's not present in the My Fav Things performance. So I was thinking someone ran out and set it up off camera.
Can someone answer this question for me? Mary and Flo very obviously do not have microphones but it seems like they CAN be heard. Are they lip syncing to a pre-record? Or are they actually singing? Without a mic, I thought people on TV shows were notoriously difficult to hear.
STOCK FOOTAGE ALERT: 3:59, it's that same damn audience like at the end of The Supremes' The Happening performance and the beginning of the Friends of Distinction's Grazing in the Grass performance.

Florence Ballard brought the group legitimacy with her innate strong presence and magnificent voice. Mary Wilson was graceful and did excellent harmonies. All 3 were equally talented.
Christmas, 1966 The beginning of the END, for Florence. Afterwards, in the elevator going up to their hotel rooms, Flo beat Diana up. Tore her wig off. Ripped her clothes. Took 3 men to pull Flo off. Please pardon my ignorance .... but if Flo and Mary are actually singing then are their microphones positioned overhead out of the camera shot but still effectively catching their voices for adequate sound mixing ?
Yes. You can see photos online of the boom mics just out of cam range. It's clear in this performance that it is "live" as the audio is so uneven.
Medleys are always cheesy, and this is no exception. Yet that special sound they had, and the show case of Holland-Dozier-Holland hits by one of the handful of greatest song writers ever (and most underrated) comes very close to redeeming this performance.
@Sheila MacDougal: Cheesy???
@@jduwayne1 Yes. What's your difficulty?
@@sheilamacdougal4874 My difficulty is that I know you’re entitled to your opinion…But someone without ANY talent at all to call the Supreme’s medley cheesy is derogatory and unnecessary!
@@sheilamacdougal4874 As if you could do a better job! LMAO…
Beautfull🌹🌹🌹Perfect🌹🌹🌹
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰Beautiful Queens
I can’t believe Diana Ross gave Ed Sullivan a kiss at the end but I think it’s great that she did. I am not a Diana Ross fan but he complimented the ladies and I think it was nice that she gave him that kiss. I don’t know if anyone ever gave Ed Sullivan a kiss on his show!! Wow!
BEHOLD..........DIANE, MARY , AND FLO...........THE QUEEN SUPREMES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Holland-Dozier-Holland masterpieces.
You can _actually_ hear Mary & Flo @ 3:35! Berry must not have paid off the audio mixer that night!
Damn where are the microphones for flo and Mary?
Overhead mics, they used it a lot on the Ed Sullivan Show. These are live vocals all the way.
@Ronald McFondle Tienes toda la razón.The Supremes eran Supremas cuando eran The Supremes.
Overhead mics were used most of the time for live shows in those days.
@@artjr1971 I think in this case they are def live since they almost overpower Diana. The audio is all over the map. Could be one of those instances like Mary wrote about in her book that during rehearsals she and Flo sang softer so when they were live they could be heard.
The most significant thing about the music during the Diana Ross and The Supremes years was different because Holland Dozier Holland left motown
They still had hits.
@@wonderboyjoy Not like they did with H-D-H though.
Florence
Mary got confused at the beginning it so cute
Lol that camera almost knocked the microphone down at the very beginning.
I was wondering if it was shaking because someone had just placed it there. It's not present in the My Fav Things performance. So I was thinking someone ran out and set it up off camera.
I was in the show
In what way? Please tell us.
Can someone answer this question for me? Mary and Flo very obviously do not have microphones but it seems like they CAN be heard. Are they lip syncing to a pre-record? Or are they actually singing? Without a mic, I thought people on TV shows were notoriously difficult to hear.
The microphones are above them, hanging from the ceiling. That technique is also used on talk shows and sitcoms.
@@btchnotme1587 Thank you!
watch at 3:04
Motowns Diana Ross Twig in a Wig all wanted to nail & Supremes could chant for sure Jackson’s ,Temptations & best of all Stevie Wonder
Twig in a wig? Lol
Wow what beauty, Jesus told Nicodemus You must be born again to enter heaven, I hope they were saved.
STOCK FOOTAGE ALERT: 3:59, it's that same damn audience like at the end of The Supremes' The Happening performance and the beginning of the Friends of Distinction's Grazing in the Grass performance.
Is just something about being alive but still be in diapers and barely being able to speak and now seeing it all these years later Shut out to all the people born in the 1960s we still hanging in there
The Girls.
This clip shows why Diana was the key to the Supremes and to Motown.. She had a charisma and star quality that one would've never thought came from the Detroit projects
Florence Ballard brought the group legitimacy with her innate strong presence and magnificent voice. Mary Wilson was graceful and did excellent harmonies. All 3 were equally talented.
Diana definitely had the star factor... I love her... indeed an amazing combo from the Detroit projects 👏🏼
2:37 i wonder if she's having some kind of spiritual trance.
Diana Ross=The Best !
Christmas, 1966
The beginning of the END, for Florence.
Afterwards, in the elevator going up to their hotel rooms, Flo beat Diana up. Tore her wig off. Ripped her clothes. Took 3 men to pull Flo off.
Feom that point, getting Cindy ready to step into the group was ON. 6 months later, July 1, 1967, Flo was out - for good.
That is a lie
Go flo ....
Hércules?
