      I love how The Supremes were an act that not only appeared on this show so many times, but which also often performed more than once during those shows, and frequently to specialty numbers. So far, mostly, they’ve been airing clips available already on previously packaged DVDs or syndicated TV episodes, albeit with improved sound quality in addition to original-print quality. I’m looking forward to them airing hopefully soon those remastered specialty segments and in their entirety, too! 😍

      No for real, glad some one else caught this! Because I was like thinking over here, like WF?! 😮 Florence was more in her element during this performance and also many other performances during this era of the Supremes. This just goes to show they were strategically trying to cancel her out. Forget all that other BS we have been fed by the media because I no longer want to hear it in 2024. Florence spoke up for herself! And sadly, when you speak up for yourself, you're suddenly a threat and TARGET for everyone smh. The same can be said for Diana's daughter and how her TV show "girlfrends" ended up due to ego.

    For those who weren’t around back then, “The Ed Sullivan Show” was one of the pinnacles of show business at the time. Getting on it even just once was a big deal - and the Supremes appeared multiple times. That’s how significant they were, and how popular. And by this time they were real show-biz glamor as well.

      What a shame. That song was way better than the group's last release (apart from a couple of later re-releases) in the UK, which was called 'Bad Weather' (different line-up of course). It only got to no. 37 there in spring 1973.

      @sanseifromkofu728 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      There might be backing vocals pre-recorded to enhance the sound, but this is definitely live. The music is much more lively than the single was, Diana ad-libs with Mary and claps which isn't on the record, and the ending is different from the record. Sometimes you can record a rehearsal performance and lip-sync that, but this seems much too improvised to be mimicked.

      Exactly Sullivan never would have allowed lip syncing, even when he had The Doors on, Jim Morrison agreed to not say some word [I think it was the word high] but he went ahead and sang it anyway, it was live and he got away with it infuriating Sullivan.@@brockreynolds870

On others (Your Heart Belongs to me, A BreathTaking Guy) lovely and warm. When singing live, her voice was still nasally through 1965 but she gradually stopped singing through nose by the time she became a solo act in 1970. Now that’s not nice. Maybe you should get the whole story concerning the tension that was between these ladies. Think about this, even after Diana left the group Mary still was unable to sing lead. Mary was a good background singer, but could she carry a group singing lead?

    • @andrewthornhill7042
      @andrewthornhill7042 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MrNathan791 Yes. By the late 1960s Berry Gordy had shattered Mary's self confidence so much that she never even considered herself a (lead) singer. In Supreme Faith (I think it was) Mary wrote that when Diana was being promoted as a solo actor and ready to leave The Supremes, she didn't want to put her name forward as a potential lead because she didn't think she had the pipes, and she wanted the group to stay a success. So she stayed in the background and let Jean Terrell move into Ross's shoes. Later she took vocal lessons to improve her technique, which in turn gave her her self confidence back.

    • @mhertz2563
      @mhertz2563 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@andrewthornhill7042Mary’s alto was not a lead singers sound. It wasn’t then and it never was during her entire career. But her personality was one of a kind and because of the sheer force of her personality and charisma and the strength of the songs that she recorded as a background singer, she sustained her career right up until the end of her life.

      Sadly Diana had an eating disorder. She was also a smoker. Her lifestyle aged her a bit. That combined with pressure from the industry and The Supremes’ work ethic. This is 1966. In 67 Twiggy would become the beauty standard and everyone wanted to be thin.

    The only bad thing about this performance is it was the only time they performed it on TV, and may very well be the only time they performed it live ever. Of all the recordings of their live shows I’ve heard, this number seems to have never become part of their lineup of songs. Would have loved to see this song get more light. It is a truly underrated part of their catalogue.

      @@MrRickyMoody yes, yes she was in fact. You can see it when the hand claps don’t sync up to the playback. 90% of the time “The girls” were lip syncing on Ed Sullivan. Or singing live softly over a (very loud) pre-recorded backing track. Everyone did it. It would be too technologically difficult and risky to pull off completely live vocals/music on live television. Especially in 1966. Even today, most artists lip sync during T.V. performances to maintain that perfect studio sound. That’s not shade, that’s just a fact. I mean, Whitney Houston’s “Star Spangled Banner” - one of the greatest “live” performances of all time was lip-synced.

    • @bleepiestofbloops
      @bleepiestofbloops 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@XXXKrisAnthony That's not true, though. They only lip-synched two or three songs and sang live over backing tracks of a few more, but this is fully live. Diana clapping more softly than Mary doesn't prove anything. This show is known for its live performances and orchestra. This would sound exactly like the single, if it was a playback.
      If you mean they're lipsyncing to a "live" version they recorded for the show, even that doesn't disprove anything any vocal ability.

      Hi! I’ve been a fan since 1963. The first record I ever bought was “When the Lovelight starts Shining....”. My collection dates back to the early 60s with memorabilia of them as The Primettes before they became the Supremes.
      The first time I saw them in person was 1965 and I was hooked. I loved all three ladies but Diana was always the star for me. I saw the original line up twice and the line up with Cindy three times. All fabulous shows and I still have the program tour booklets!
      I’m looking to eliminate some items from my collection. I have duplicate and triple copies of albums and magazines and I want to get rid of the excess.

What magazine clips do you have?

    • @RP-oe3uq
      @RP-oe3uq 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Matt C
      Yes, I have been there since the beginning and that’s one of the reasons I find it curious when people who weren’t there (or were there) try to rewrite the Supremes’ history. They usually have a grudge against Diana. This resentment may come from having read Mary’s book or J Randy Taborrelli’s book. But those books are not the reality.
      Anyway, the first time I saw them was at Blinstrubs in Boston in October 1965. I had written you that it was 1966 but I got my dates mixed up. That’s when Diana brought me up from the staircase and I sang “Where did our love go” with them. Diana held my hand and I remember her laughing because she didn’t have to coach me regarding the lyrics. Of course I knew all the words. I stayed with Diana but at the song’s ending, all 3 Supremes gave me a hug. Wonderful memories. This was the engagement when Diana had to be rushed to the hospital after she had collapsed on stage. That didn’t happen the night I was there. I saw them again with Florence at the Rhode Island Civic Auditorium at the beginning of 1967 but in 1968, when they returned to this auditorium, I saw them for the first time with Cindy. It was as though they hadn’t missed a beat after Florence left. My fourth Supremes sighting was quite the surprise. My parents arranged for us to see Diana and the Supremes on the Ed Sullivan show. We saw the taping of the show that was aired on January 5th, 1969 when they sang “Love Child”, “I’m living in Shame” and the “I get a kick out of you/I’ve got you under my skin”” medley. That was beyond a thrill. I could never thank my parents enough. They loved “the girls”.
