I believe it definitely matters when it comes to perch fishing, because when I use wire leader I have seen perch actually biting at the leader multiple times. And this was in very very dark water with low visibility, maybe 30cm of visibility.
When fishing waters with a lot of pikes and limited fishing pressure, fluorocarbon doesn’t really bring any advantage. I am fishing in Sweden, Ireland and Canada and I have never experienced a big difference. The most important thing is how you manage your lure and its action. However, when the water is cold and you need to fish quite slowly, if the pikes are a bit cautious and the water gin clear, then fluorcarbon can make the difference. It is nevertheless important to think about pike safety first and to use « heavy » fluorocarbon traces when requested.
Totally agree. Cold clear water is where fluocarbon leader truly shines. Also IMO the challenge would be less biased if you would exchange set-ups with each other after every fish caught or after certain time, say every 15-20 min or so, so that each of you have fished with both fluocarbon and wire leaders. Great footage and fun video, thank you guys and cheers from Canada!
The real mythbuster will make a casting and reeling machine😜. And the same setup, rod, reel, line and the lure. Oow oow and i bet the made it explode somehow😂
Bit late to the debate, but thanks for uploading. I'd love to see this repeated with much lighter wire traces and fluorocarbon as I feel like there's a breaking strain at which your leader becomes off-putting regardless of whether it's wire or fluoro. If you did a series of challenges with lighter leaders, you might be able to identify where that kicks in.
I've had more action just running straight braid to be honest. But I did get a blow up on a top water lure running steel leader recently and I've had lots of follows with flouro leader. I've caught most of my pike on straight braid tho. Even in clear water.
No nyt on tekemisen meininki, "fish on" ja 1:20 kelalla niin nopeasti kuin vain kerkiää kelaamaan, bum, mitä fiilistelyä. Kukapa nyt väsytellä jaksais järeillä veiveillä, wau !

Megabass is a respectable brand is the Smallmouth and LargeMouth bass fishing world. When you use that thick FC, you also have to use sleeves and that kinda undermines the invisibility. Up to 0,5 mm or so it is easily possible to tie FC and braid with FG knot or Albright and that way you can use really long leaders which can run through the guides. I myself use the FC all the time, the thickness I choose is between 2,5 and 3 times the thickness of braid. I tie it with FG knot and the main purpose is not less visibility or pike teeth (those are small and questionable extra bonuses), but to protect the braid from rocks, reeds etc - braid really does not like abrasive things. BTW, while perch or trout fishing in high pike probability areas I add 20-30 cm wire leader to FC, because light FC can be so easily cut by pike.
Lol fluoro should be over 1mm diameter for pike and even that's on the low end. 150lb fluoro is the sweet spot and it has to be a 100% high quality fluoro ie seagur, to zuri, ect. You can tie that fluoro easily, i can tye 150lb yo zuri topknot fluoro using a tiny perfection loop and backing the 90 degree tag into the loop and neatening. Can also use 5 min epoxy on fluoro over the knot for more neatness.
@@kos7941 I don't quite agree....Musky don't cut thru 150# fluro (130, yes) & pike up to 40" are not in the same bracket as musky. Braid to a snap, ball bearing swivel to fluro with a Centauri knot on flurio over 80#--- non issue & crimp free. Plenty of vids (including in-Fisherman) suggesting 20# fluro is fine for pike.... 150# changes the bait's action, and adding unnecessary crimps will only add more weight..
And the states are looking at Sweden for inspiration and technique, euro tackle has options that are not available in the states and some of it works great.
Fish rely less on eyesight than people seem to believe. They tend to forget that water bends light and distorts colors. In addition, pike and musky often hunt in thick weeds or dingy water.
I have done this so many times before and all I can say is that the leader type doesn't matter to the fish. ( pike, zander and perch ) I never noticed any type of leader to get more bites than the other. Caught many many perch even on 1mm thick flourcarbon. They just don't care.
davidnieuwland yeah. I think that the leader visibility will matter a few times. If it’s an increadibly slow session it may matter but you don’t really have those super slow sessions that often. So for the most part, leader won’t matter:)!
Visability of leader doesent matter if it did , you think the fish would see the 2 giant trebles out the bait or the wierd snap attaching the leader. Fluoros better for suspending lures, grabbing the leader without risk of cutting ur hands when a fish is close to the boat, you can retry when frayed and also see the damage easier, and kink resistances.
My dudes ! Can you do next challange? Maybe you can test in trolling. One boat, two whaterproof cameras and two the same lures. First with fluorocarbon and second with wire. Challange accepted?
Ha !! Pontus how come no titanium leaders to test? I've had line thru lures that have that awful thick Muskie wire on and I throw it in the bin and swap it out with 60lb titanium How does Mille only has only Muskie leader in his tackle bag? Good stuff 👍👍 despite the crappy wire 😶
I have never seen the diffrence between the leaders, I dont fish big I do ultralight fishing and medium fishing id say I use wire since its way more flexible and its almost invisible in the waters i fish in
tbh flouro has out done the wire for chub and perch for me also wire kinks up a lot when pike fishing I use like .70 flouro and never lost a thing literally 100 plus fish
Paul The bearded one Downing I use titanium leaders. They’re expencive but you can use the same leader for over a year. Great material that really holds up well!
@@Don_Puparo i use steel if the water temperature is high because i use normaly smaller lures and the pikes are more aggressive when the strike the lures. in this time i think steel saves me that i don't losing fishes because they often inhaled the whole lure. in this Situation it could happen that the pikes destroy the fluo leader and they gone with the lure in their mouth. it is not so nice. in Winter the pikes are not so active and i use more bigger lures which are not so often inhaled totally. and, if i fish shallow i use the lift up effect from that fluo leader and i can fish big lures a bit slower.

Even with wire you should check, if fluoro frays cut and retye. Not enough guys do it and wonder why there bite off, you have to check your tackle. You wouldnt fish with rusty hooks or a broken reel lol
biggest advantage of fluoro leaders is that you dont have to prepare them at home. no ferrules, no pliers, just 2 simple knots and you re ready to go. and very important for flyfishing imo; it takes me 30 mins of casting to make the wire leader slip out of the ferrules, making me lose my fly.
Lol I use 150lb fluoro, and 75lb titanium. Even 150lb titanium sometimes, and all my wires are tyed.
