      @@jeannec1154Had an opportunity to mingle with a bunch of Gen Z and Millennials last weekend, and to my surprise (and delight) none of them really embraced full wokeness. They go along with new ideas about gender and such, as young people tend to do. But they will step on any of their peers who tries to use their own real or imagined uniqueness to bully others or turn themselves into a victim. And they were on the fence about things like treating young transgenders, being well aware of medical and moral objections. I’d say there is hope for these generations. Amongst them like amongst us, what you hear all day every day in the media is not their prevailing opinion.
      What scares me more are the older generations: how pretty much the entirety of the “intellectuals”, reporters, writers, scholars, politicians, have embraced wokeness without question. Including all the bad parts of it: the divisive sectarianism, the hatred, the bullying and persecution of dissenting opinions, cancel culture and so on.

      Weak overindulging first world parents and vain post-camera self-idolatry take much of the blame.
      Their parents primed them for wokeness so they would grow up to make Roman-style mainstream hex cults.

    At conventions I actively avoid vendors, panels, and booths that boldly state trans, bipoc, or anything else the activists loudly claim because 1) I don't want to deal with them and 2) honestly most of their products are not that good or decent quality worth purchasing. They don't understand supply and demand, let your work speak for itself not guilt trip people through activism.

I grew up in Nigeria watching fantasy and sci-fi shows like He-Man, Star Wars, Lord of the rings, Conan etc and i came to love the genres. It was only as i got older that i was able to get more into them via novels and video games and the communities welcomed me and helped me find more stuff to enjoy🎉 but all these woke people started ruining it with their toxic identity politics and attacking genuine fans (old and new) but i am happy to see this is gradually changing and the woke are being pushed out.

    We were bullied for liking games and anything nerdy, so when the time came where it became more "acceptable" we let people in. We didn't want to keep people out of it and wanted to spread the joy we found in these things. Unfortunately, we let the Vikings in as well and they ransacked the place. It looks nothing like how it used to and we are to blame for that. The open border policy bit us in the butt, so now we should all understand that we may need to gatekeep from now on. I hope we all learned this and never lax on it.

    • @guyfalcurious762
      @guyfalcurious762 หลายเดือนก่อน +22

      Gatekeeping is a start, but it has to be more proactive. Just because you drove the vikings out does not mean that they are gone. They just returned to lurking in the shadows and prowling the borders. Until they lose the ability to raid and wage war to loot and destroy and drive you out of your hobby, this is guaranteed to happen again and again, and each time, it will be harder and harder to drive them off. This, unfortunately, is a lesson that can not be taught only learned.

    • @Sephvion
      @Sephvion หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@guyfalcurious762 While I agree, there is a clear line when proactiveness become witch hunting. We can't become like Inquisitors who even sniff a minute bit of corruption and start throwing around "HERESY!" That would make us become like they were. Each person has a subjective line and criteria. We may have a long fight ahead, but we can't become them. As long as we don't accept people who want to change anything and everything, I think that's a good start. If they can't accept that, then they can get the hell out and find something else.

    Bell and her husband (who was actually the one named to be running things, btw) were volunteers. They served at the convention committee's pleasure. They had no right to make plans for being in charge forever. They had no right to use funding meant for writer guests for their own uses, as they admitted to doing, even if those uses were connected to the symposium (which apparently they weren't, in some cases). She was a crook in a small way; she and her husband didn't justify their funding by bringing in fan bodies; and basically they failed, and stole (misappropriated) convention money and time and event space. Failure is one thing, but the misappropriation you'd have to be a fool to ignore.

There is no way I’m going to waste my time and money going to a convention to be surrounded by bullies. The whole reason I gravitated to this hobby over 35 😮years ago was because of the openness of the other people that were already a part of the community. The whole point of this hobby is to get away from the real world and all of its ugliness and escape to a place where the hero actually has a chance to win the day. One thing I'm noticing is that when people take stands against loud mouths who pretend to ve activist, the first thing the loud mouth does is threaten to 'expose' things, which shows you they never went in with good intentions OR even cared about 'problematic issues' as someone who DID would have addressed the issues long ago for the benefit of others. The panel only cared about 'issues' when their jobs were on the line. So yeah, they deserve to be let go due to being not just grifters but coniving harpies who have been using the con to present their politics no one wants while acting uppity about it.
    Why the heck would you agree to book ANYONE who has no works or interest in sci-fi and their only claim to fame is another garbage book on current day feminism? Con goers don't come for that crap and it's idiocitic. And who the hell cares if a con is 'comfortable with Whiteness'. All that means is that the harpies hated that White dudes didn't pay attention to them and were having fun. I'm sick of these weirdos making up buzzterms against people who just want to enjoy themselves and their lives.

    My friends and I went to Gencon every year during the 90s and a bit into the 00s. It was crowded AF. But, it was incredibly friendly and welcoming. Everyone greeted you with a smile and simply wanted to know what games, comics, authors, etc. you were into so they could share stories with you about common interests. I considered going back in 2019 for old times sake. I was warned off by a friend who had moved to Michigan (lower State) and was therefore a lot closer and could keep going every year. He told me he stopped going by 2018. "The atmosphere has changed and its bad. If someone asks you about your interests now, and you say the wrong thing, in other words, you 'trigger' them in some way, you instantly become persona non grata. I tell you, buddy, it feels like walking on a minefield now. People are not smiling nearly as much as when we all went there 20+ years ago. There's a whole 'cover-your-six' feeling instead." He goes to other cons now. I was disappointed to hear this. I have fond memories of Gencon. I'm sure people are still having fun there. If the weren't, they would have long since collapsed. But I guess a lot of people feel that a haven for geek culture has been bent to the darkness of grift guised as 'inclusion' and pushed by bullying, narcissistic hypocrites. I am also guessing that, now that money is on the line, Gencon is finally being forced to choose between activism and being able to continue. Terrible way to learn something that should have been obvious the moment these harpies started screeching but, better late than never I suppose.

    Those in the TTRPG community thought the activists just wanted to play, and after a lifetime of being bullied and ostracized because of what they loved the role players were happy to share their beloved hobby never imagining that they’d only succeeded in trading one kind of bully for a much more insidious and manipulative kind of bully that kept you from fighting back by claiming they were the victims.
    Gamers aren’t the most socially adept lot (most of us aren’t) so it makes sense that they didn’t catch on and figure out a counter right away but it was always going to happen. The other areas of pop culture are only fighting back sooner because they had the lesson of ttrpg and things like video games are harder to hold on to once you start damaging them.

  • @formes2388
    @formes2388 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

    Something that needs to be pointed out: The more creative control a community has over their own expierience, the less reason for vocal backlash exists. And with the TTRPG community - we have game rules that work just as fine today, as a decade ago, and for a lot of established players - we aren't necessarily paying attention to what is CURRENTLY happening, we are familiar with the rule sets of games that we use, GM's may very well have a pile of rule sets they have never actual ran - because they have idea's they like.
    With TTRPG's in particular - roughly 1/5th of the table at the least is going to be a big creator of some nature, and in my expierience it tends to be about half are in some way shape or form really bloody creative types that just love to invest into an idea. To that group, it doesn't matter what WotC is doing, or Paizo for the most part: We have the core rules and often times, that is years and years of play not needing anything else.
    I think in the end, this is why the D&D community only really started getting extremely loud and mad at WotC when they threatened the OGL 1.0a license: The entire community is functionally live, and let live. TTRPG's are an incrediblle place to explore all kinds of non-sense, strive to understand being someone else entirely and so it is a traditionally far more open place to be. The Irony is, my expierience with the community at large is you get a lot of eye rolling at the activism for the simple fact that their ARE differences, and that's ok - don't desparage someone for being different, just accept that... maybe they are; now - what were we doing? Were we here to have a good time, and tell stories - or were we here to talk politics?
    The mistake of GenCon is likely they saw the pandemic as a slow down, not realizing that the slow down was paired in an exaustion. And this is something I think a lot of companies didn't get: Covid, and all that transpired acted as a shield to the growing activism in various places; unfortunately - shields break, and they get discarded, and when that takes place there is only what is left behind that shield to stand; and what is left once you take the shield away from the corpo activism is an unwanted leach: And we are seeing it be rejected. People can go out, people can talk, people are re-discovering old media from games, to movies, to music and... It's good: The message is hope, endurance, and perseverience; The message of old media is one of looking forward towards something better - something worth fighting for. And as people discover this - it is contrasted to the new; and when that happens: The new doesn't stand to scrutiny.

  • @nilpointfive

Sometimes, "You did a good job" is "We're going to say as little as possible, and what we say is going to be tepid and benign, because we know we'll see anything else we say skewed wildly out of context on social media, because we suspect _you_ are as petty as @#$%." In either case, demanding further reply ("open" yet "private"?!) and going on about their expectation that they would reign in perpetuity regardless of their performance suggests, at the very least, a willful ignorance of how their actions reflect on their image. Or as Gen Con might say, "Charisma is their dump stat".

      Any company or whatever stupid enough to hire her just deserves ALL the fallout and toxicity that comes there way. More and more people are getting sick of the nonsense and NOW is NOT the time to be getting involved with the grifting canker. Certainly as many see Anita specifically as pretty much the source of all this nonsense in games.

      I hope you’re right, but don’t believe it enough. So I prepare for the next 5+ years being the time of the hyper aggressive woke, doubling down and destroying even more than ever before.

    A great example of this is the white wolf games and onyx path that came in and litterally used those exact methods to try and destroy the system lore of the games that they custodian because they claimed that they where problematic.

    I'm old enough to remember when Origins and Gen Con were practically invisible to anyone but the nerd/geek gamers lingering at the edges of respectable society. There were no activists, just oddballs and outcasts looking for a place where they were not merely tolerated, but welcomed, even celebrated.
    These days, everyone who sees themselves as some variety of outcast (even if they hold all the power) has become a militant, not so much seeking community as demanding the system adapt to their particular doctrines. I suppose this was the inevitable result of the mainstreaming of TTRPGs, as a niche hobby became not merely acceptable, but somehow cool or chic.
    Anyway, it is good to see some push back, even if it is only for mainly financial reasons. It's high time we took our hobbies back.

    The fundamental difference is this: Tabletop RPGs offer a world of essentially limitless imagination. On the other hand, videogames are as close to a pure meritocracy as you can get. Which one do you think appeals more to the gender-confused and identity obsessed?

    It is like these people have never actually read science fiction. The real themes of DEI (lack of opportunity and systemic discrimination) which do exist have been addressed by science fiction writers all the way back to the golden age. Strong female characters - check. Strong disabled characters - check. Strong characters of color - check.

    Newer "fans"? Bold of you to assume they were fans in the first place. These folks seem like they want control, and nothing else. Fans at least want to be understanding of others, even if they don't agree with them. I no longer go to events, because of these types.
