Call me an idealist, but I don't think a healthy society is unattainable. Look at the Nordic countries, Germany, The Netherlands. They may not be perfect, but they're pretty damned good. All it takes is a properly democratic system and an educated populace. But you're going to have to fight to give the power to the people, and you're going to have to evade the hopeful fancies of politicians and come to terms with reality. I'm rooting for those of you fighting for meaningful change from over here in the US. Over here people are too apathetic right now to try to fix the ever-increasing corruption. But in every social movement there is potential for forming the next pillar of freedom and prosperity. I wish you the best of luck in striving towards that!

This is a true story, I first heard this song on the radio when i was in 8th grade. I was living outside of Minneapolis and would wake up every morning with my alarm clock set to 93.7 the rock station. When my alarm went off that morning I was woken up to the go back to sleep part. I had never heard the song before and was so confused. I think I layed in bed confused and scared listening to the last half of the song until the radio host got on and I realized it wasn't a dream or a paranormal experience.
I had a similar experience with System of a Down's BYOB, except it was the middle of the night, like 2 am. As it played, I was confused and terrified and i loved it, and because it was the radio, i was never going to know what the song was.

A lot of people (including myself, as much as I'd like to think not) in our society take more comfort in being blind to the truth of the problems around us rather then risking the internal and external conflict that can arise from questioning them. The whole song seems to be taken from the perspective of a father comforting a child about the bogeyman in the closet. In this analogy, the father represents corporate media or any other misleading source of public information, the child represents the every day civilian in western society and the boogeyman is representative of the knowledge of frightening truths.

This was the kind of music i grew up listening to, its very depressing, and im a very depressed person. But id rather be depressed with my eyes wide open, than with my eyes blissfully shut.
This music felt good to me personally. It brought me through a lot of really bad days. I wouldn't say I felt seen per say, but before I saw the video I had already applied my own intepretation. I found myself in this song. When this particular remix came out, I was experiencing the systemic disadvantage of being my color and having to code switch or tune my blackness to an acceptable level in public and keep others asleep and ignorant of my experience out of a loss of hope that explaining my situation would be at all effective. I felt like this song verbalized how so many of my peers, and neighbors who weren't my color had this privelige of being able to stay asleep and unaware of what people like me had to go through. A loud roudy rebellion from someone not black was mere harmless kids being kids but a simple questioning of anything that didn't seem right if you were black was met with harshness. Loud roudy black rebellion from black children is met with force. There were armed officers in my high school and who they were there to get was always implicit if not directly stated. Although artists like Tupac already had Woke messages, I couldnt identify because I've never seen myself as a thug and frankly wasn't welcomed into that culture. This song and Rage against the machine gave me what I needed at the time.

Call me an idealist, but I don't think a healthy society is unattainable. Look at the Nordic countries, Germany, The Netherlands. They may not be perfect, but they're pretty damned good. All it takes is a properly democratic system and an educated populace. But you're going to have to fight to give the power to the people, and you're going to have to evade the hopeful fancies of politicians and come to terms with reality. I'm rooting for those of you fighting for meaningful change from over here in the US. Over here people are too apathetic right now to try to fix the ever-increasing corruption. But in every social movement there is potential for forming the next pillar of freedom and prosperity. I wish you the best of luck in striving towards that!

This is a true story, I first heard this song on the radio when i was in 8th grade. I was living outside of Minneapolis and would wake up every morning with my alarm clock set to 93.7 the rock station. When my alarm went off that morning I was woken up to the go back to sleep part. I had never heard the song before and was so confused. I think I layed in bed confused and scared listening to the last half of the song until the radio host got on and I realized it wasn't a dream or a paranormal experience.

This was the kind of music i grew up listening to, its very depressing, and im a very depressed person.
But id rather be depressed with my eyes wide open, than with my eyes blissfully shut.
This music felt good to me personally. It brought me through a lot of really bad days. I wouldn't say I felt seen per say, but before I saw the video I had already applied my own intepretation. I found myself in this song. When this particular remix came out, I was experiencing the systemic disadvantage of being my color and having to code switch or tune my blackness to an acceptable level in public and keep others asleep and ignorant of my experience out of a loss of hope that explaining my situation would be at all effective. I felt like this song verbalized how so many of my peers, and neighbors who weren't my color had this privelige of being able to stay asleep and unaware of what people like me had to go through. A loud roudy rebellion from someone not black was mere harmless kids being kids but a simple questioning of anything that didn't seem right if you were black was met with harshness. Loud roudy black rebellion from black children is met with force. There were armed officers in my high school and who they were there to get was always implicit if not directly stated. Although artists like Tupac already had Woke messages, I couldnt identify because I've never seen myself as a thug and frankly wasn't welcomed into that culture. This song and Rage against the machine gave me what I needed at the time.
