    Hey, thank you for this great video. One thing I can't find anywhere on YT regarding IEM is: how do you ask the sound guy to let them hook up your mics to your own mixer? Then, do they need extra mic cables to go from your mixer into their mixer so they can control the floor sound? How do you actually route your mics and input sources to your mixer without peeving the sound guy. This is coming from a background of a local metal band, where we may only have 30 minutes and they may not want to change any of their lines or routing.

      There is no easy answer to this question. When my band was doing shows with two or three other bands, my first step was to find out who will be running sound and contact them. No sound man will want to rerun all his cabling so you can send things to your mixer. In that situation I would ask if they are comfortable with mixing for IEMs. If so ask them how they typically do it. If they have a smart mixer like a presonus or one of the mixers that now are controlled by iPad then they should be able to set up a mix for you and "save" it. If you are the first band then you should be good to go if you show up a little early to sound check. If you are going on later, ask if you can show up early and get your IEM mix preset and saved. that way they can just load up the mix when you get on stage.
      As long as you are professional and nice you have a good chance that they will work with you. I'll be completely honest, in multiple band situations in local venues you will have a tough time getting a IEM mix. My experience is that the bands have 10 minutes to get one band off and the other on stage. At that point the sound guy is typically creating the mix of your band during the first song. If you can't use IEMs definitely use good earplugs. A lot of the mix in a tiny club will be dictated by how loud your drummer plays. They will bring everything up to match that. Sadly, vocals are often the last piece they add to the mix and in order to hear yourself you will be fighting feedback. Good luck.

      @@rickreedproductions8128 Hey, thank you for the detailed and fast response. Yeah, that's kindof what I was worried about and makes total sense. I think I still want to go down this route and try it out because the promise is so awesome, but hopefully we're able to actually use it. In a worst case scenario, I could still have everyone hear the click track, backing tracks, and bass drum in ear

    Will this work using an analog mixer? Meaning, could I mix my own in-ear volume without affecting others in-ears, or is that only possible with digital mixers?

    • @rickreedproductions8128
      @rickreedproductions8128  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you can mix your own monitor mix with an analog mixer but it has to be done by hand on the actual mixer itself. You do that using the aux controls on each channel. I describe how to do that in “Part 1”. The link should be in the above description.

    Hi there. I have a question. Aux in Presonus 16.0.2 are mono. How do you connect 4 players if the Aux gives only right or left channel? Do I get it right that only when using wireless IEMs we have a proper 2 channel output as IEMs can convert Mono to stereo (at least mine can)? I just tried to connect to AUX a pair of headphones and it didnt work - still left or right channel output only. Thank you for your reply and videos.

    • @rickreedproductions8128
      @rickreedproductions8128  ปีที่แล้ว

      Each of the four aux outputs is mono. When you use a headphone amp (wired or wireless) it should convert the single mono from the aux out to dual mono. That means you are getting the same mono signal fed in to both sides of your headphones/IEMs. It won’t be “stereo” but it will be in both ears.
      I have an older (10 years) Presonus 16.0.2 so the new ones might have some different features like stereo aux outs but in my experience you have to have a board with 8 aux outputs in order to give 4 players true stereo IEMs.

    • @rickreedproductions8128
      @rickreedproductions8128  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Once you pay for the equipment (mixer/phones) there shouldn't be any other costs. It's been a few years since I made this video so it's a little out of date. Most of the new digital mixers have wifi built into them so you don't have to have a separate computer or wireless router.

  • @delicate.mascara
    @delicate.mascara 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    this may be a silly question but why does the mixer have to be digital? I'm looking at the PreSonus StudioLive AR8c - or I'm looking for something in that price range and size. It's just for a solo act with a backing track, 1 vocal mic, and a synth so I don't need all those extra channels. would really appreciate any tips!

    • @rickreedproductions8128
      @rickreedproductions8128  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you only need one monitor mix that mixer would work fine. The digital mixer allows you to adjust your mix remotely from your phone. It’s not necessary at all. It’s just convenient if you have a different people wanting to adjust their mix without flagging down the sound man and having him adjust it for you.
      In your case, it’s just you. You can reach over and adjust your mix easily enough

    Okay, but how do I route the signal of the instruments to my monitor mixer? Let’s say guitarists have processors with DI outputs. But what about drums and vocals? Do I have to ask a sound guy to return me those from FOH to my monitoring mixer on stage?

    • @rickreedproductions8128
      @rickreedproductions8128  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oleksandr Zahorulia In order to have two mixers (yours for monitors and the venue’s for FOH) you will need to buy a splitter like this www.seismicaudiospeakers.com/products/16-channel-xlr-splitter-snake-cable-two-15-foot-trunks
      For us, we found that most professional sound engineers are used to working with in ear setups like this. In fact they usually love it because they only have to mix the FOH. We often had to download their mixer’s app to work with their board. But for smaller venues when you are playing with multiple bands it’s often more of a challenge. The sound engineer is often not willing to re-patch all of their inputs into your splitter and who could blame them?
      In my experience, I found that contacting the sound engineer in advance of the show, explaining your needs and showing up early to get your sound check is the best way to get a good monitor mix in those situations. Almost all of the digital boards can save the monitor mix. If you can show up early, set your mix, and then have them save it then you are good to go. They mix all the other bands just like normal but when you get on stage they drop your preset on and it’s perfect.
      The brutal truth is that even though we try to control for all the variables in a live show it rarely works out that way. Unless you are the headliner with a professional sound engineer you will always have to be flexible and adapt to the situation. Being polite, professional, and easy to work with while having a solid idea of what you need to hear is the best way to get a good in ear mix.
      Good luck!

      Nelson Silva You can use one or two headphone splitters like the Behringer MicroAMP HA400 4-Ch Headphone Amplifier to get the 5 signals to everyone but you will still have only 2 monitor mixes. One for each aux send.

    Can you talk about IEM amp bleed? Thanks!

    • @rickreedproductions8128
      @rickreedproductions8128  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry for the delay in responding. Without more information I’m assuming you are in a band and most likely you are getting the drums and other instruments bleeding into the in-ear mix. In my experience that bleed is coming from your vocal mic when you aren’t singing or standing directly in front of it. The way to fix that is to put a “noise gate” or “gate” on your (and any other) vocal mic.
      A noise gate sets a volume level to a certain audio level. Below that level, the “gate” is closed and no sound is allowed to go through the channel. Any sound above that level “opens the gate” and is allowed to come through the channel. So you set the gate’s level to below your singing volume but above your band’s room volume.
      Hope that helps. When things slow down I might do a short video based on the comments section to visually answer questions.

      As long as you have an "aux output" for each performer you can have a specific mix for each performer. Each person dials in as much of each instrument as they want.

    • @rickreed9990

      @@rickreed9990 Thank you Rick, so with the solution in the video we get all the signals only in one earphone, so the other one doesnt play? Or do we get the signals in both earbuds. If so, is it panned the way it is in the main out? By this question I mean, if I move one guitar to the left in the main out, does it move automatically in the headphones to the left as well? I was thinking about panning the guitars like 50% left and right etc. just to clean the room in the headphones, so I am looking for the solution.

    • @rickreed9990
      @rickreed9990 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Tomáš Adamik the same mono signal goes to both ears. You can’t pan left or right. Usually the signal in the Aux send is pre-fader so level and panning for the signal to the main outs will not have any effect on the aux signal.
      I don’t have any experience running stereo IEMs but can look into it.

    • @rickreedproductions8128

      Any router would work. According to Presonus you should get one that operates above the normal 2.5Ghz frequency to avoid interference with other WiFi devices in the area. It’s not necessary but recommended. I can’t stress enough that any router you use needs to be password protected. If not any person in the audience with the free qmix app can take over and start changing the mix. I have had multiple sound guys tell me stories about this happening.

      sandy rizky I am assuming you mean using Xiaomi earbuds. Any earbuds will work. But using ones with foam pads isolate you from the room noise with means you won’t turn up the volume as high. Less volume means you are less likely to damage your hearing
      Personally I would not use earbuds without foam pads. One of the main reasons I started using in ears is that I’ve had some hearing loss from playing in bands for so many years. Particularly playing with live drummers in small practice spaces.
