    John A Mcdonald also was a centralist who spear headed the system that has given so much power to the federal govt ahead of the provinces. If you want to get angry about things like "equalization payments", the federal govt could not have done that without the foundations of power originally brought about by the first PM. The PM disliked the american federal system, and used the american civil war as justification for not going that way.
    He still called it federalism, for marketing reasons. There's often a funny correlation between colonialism and authoritarian centralization of govt - at least in the 19th century.
