I like Morrison for what he does. His stories are high concept and psychadelic. It helps to have some knowledge about character histories, but don't need to read everything. If you ever try to read Morrison's interviews, he explains what he was doing. Like his batman was from a point of view of what if all that crazy wacky stuff from all eras of batman actually happened. It’s crazy to hear someone describe Batman the way I feel about the character too. I think sometimes it may be cool to see Batman out of Gotham or maybe in space here or there. I totally think it’s weird when they add batlore stuff pre origin of Batman, I’ve always thought it was a lame way to draw people in because they market it as like here is the shocking hidden origin that will shake Batman to his core and usually it’s retconned in a couple of years or they build upon it then retcon it again lol. I like Batman’s origin the way it is, cool stuff like The Court Of Owls builds upon Batman to over come his adversary but also show that Batman’s just a person and that he doesn’t always know everything even though he tries his best. Batman is just a dude, getting to travel thru time and is pretty dope. Flash and supe can travel thru time at will. Bruce cant be glued to just his city. Is like how daredevil will never see space. The mere mortals deserve some "super" too.
I love the Morrison Batman vol 1 and 2 but I do feel you have to already like and understand Morrison's writing to enjoy this book and also read the other Batman material to enjoy some of the plot points in the book. Im looking forward to vol 3 and is a day one buy for me.

While I disagree I do enjoy learning opposite opinions to get a full well rounded perspective on a topic. Enjoy your reviews man keep them coming!
I like Morrisons run for what it is, deep and bat-shit crazy lore. It is heavy, and some stuff is just strange. It is definitely no entry point and by no means the best Batman (which is subjective of course), but I think the whole story is an accomplishment and awesome concept. I really liked the review and your honest criticism, keep up the good work!
I don't hate this run, but I don't love it. Totally agree that it's a bit all over the place. And I also don't love when they try to make Batman too big scale. As you said, he's really just a human at the end of the day. To be honest, I'm way more excited for the Scott Snyder & Greg Capullo Batman omnibus coming out in October. I totally agree with you, personally I want Batman on the streets being a detective/vigilante and not off earth. Great video/review as always brother.
I didn't even like volume 1 that much, I don't know why but it gets really confusing when Morrison just jumps from one story to another and we have to put the pieces together to even grasp what is happening. Not happy to, but might pick up volume 2 just because of the collection
Staying tuned! Yeah, man, I agree. This run is confusing as hell. Why not keep things simple and interesting? Sometimes it feels like you need a PhD to read his stuff.
That's the thing, you don't. It's just plain bad writing, but the Morrison fanboys will swear it's deep because Morrison is referencing a Silver Age issue of some obscure character that nobody cares anymore. It's ok if you like it, but it is still bad writing by any mother metric.

Don't like Batman on a grand scale......Mark Waid liked this. I had a discussion about Final Crisis with a friend the other day and the fact that there's really a lot of other material you should be familiar with to have a good understanding of the comic. Part of me really likes that, Grant Morrison is like hey, the history of DC is in this book if you don't know it you'll be confused. Another part of me doesn't want to do extensive reading all the time for one story. Also, I really love Dickbats, I wish he was Bats longer like 5 - 10 years honestly would've been great. Edit: It really took me some time to get into Frank Quitely's art, I wasn't big on it for X-Men didn't understand why he drew everyone looking like they'd spent too much time underwater and their skin is wrinkled. Once I read All Star Superman the art started to grow on me by the time I read We3 I loved it.
Everyone has their own taste! I personally love Morrison’s run and Snyder’s but can’t stand anything written by Tom King. Morrison can be very hit and miss, Final Crisis is pretty much unreadable whereas All-Star Superman is superb.
I appreciate the honest opinion, if I want time travel stuff I’ll read X Men or Fantastic Four or something Marvel. I want Batman to be human and dark and I want him to get his ass kicked and get back up. I want it to be somewhat believable
Hey Gem, just re-reading Batman RIP arc and about to jump into Final Crisis. I really liked the art style of RIP. For the most part I enjoyed it and see glimmers of genius even though it was confusing at times. I'm not a big fan of the global Batman either so I might wait or skip the volume 2 and 3 arcs. By the way when you said" Read Batman by Grant Morrison said no one ever"(for a newbie) and how it was "so whack over" and over again was really funny. Just curious, who are your favourite Batman artists? I'm always picky about the art.
Thanks for the review! Just curious, Gem Mint, do you read these omnis in one sitting or few issues a day? Also, how long does it take you to finish the whole run? ;)
definitely prefer a batman on the gritty streets on the bad side of town, kicking people in the face. always thought it was weird seeing him, suited up, cowl on, in broad daylight or sitting down in a justice league meeting. it takes away from the terror factor. loved the part in the keaton film where the cops found him unconscious and one of them said ''oh shit, it's a dude in armor" and the other cop was like ''this is not a dude! you're a dude. this is a man!"
First Grant Morrison book I ever read was All Star Superman. I fucking loved it. Ever since then I've really struggled to get through almost any other book by him including these two omnis. Most of his books rely heavily on prior knowledge and are really convoluted. I haven't tried New X-Men yet. Is it easier to understand than this?
Yeah I’m with you. I did not like most of Morrison’s run at all. I thought Paul Dini’s Detective run, which was going on at the same time, was a lot better.
Bad news Gem: I hear that the whole Dark Knights Metal story in DC Rebirth bounces out of a lot of stuff from Morrison's run. Like the Barbatos and Dr Hurt stuff? Sorry!

I agree 100%. I hate Morrisons DC run. His Batman and Final Crisis were awful and made me quit comics back in the day. Coming back now. Glad I’m not alone in my feelings on Morrison
Hm, doesn't look very intriguing tbh, thanks for the review Gem! Might just have to wait on the Snyder & Capullo Batman Omnibus to finally pick up a modern day Batman omni lol
yes, the Snyder and capullo run was definitely one of my favorites. Beautiful artwork and great writing, save that unnecessary issue at the end of city of owls
Did you ever read Volume 3? Or the Absolute Batman Inc. book? Because I would say it's a lot better than this, for my money. I do like this book but I get some of your criticisms. Vol. 3 is much more back to the real Batman stuff with Bruce back in the cowl with Damian as his Robin. It finishes the run and brings back Talia and even Ra's al Ghul as the villains. Catwoman has a really cool appearance. Cassandra Cain, Jason Todd, whatever whatever. I recommend it.
There is a trade they put out called Time and the Batman. It kind of explains what happened to batman in final crisis. I wish they collected it in these omnis but oh well. Morrison stuff just gotta be confusing i guess lol
Another great video. I love your honest, down to Earth reviews. I'm not a Grant Morrison fan. I think he's WAY overrated. I freaked when I found out he'd be taking over the writing for Batman. I picked up some singles issues once in a while and my reaction was often like "Am I having a stroke or does this shit not make any sense?" The only thing I liked about Arkham Asylum was the artwork. Morrison's writing on that was a joke. Final Crisis was the most confusing shit show I ever read. Morrison fans defend him by saying: "It's YOUR fault. You need to read everything else that's ever been written!" To that I say "Fuck you. If he was a good comic book writer, I wouldn't be required to do research!" I did think Omnibus vol. 1 wasn't that bad, though. So I had some hopes for vol. 2. Pretty much the only thing Morrison wrote that I really liked was dOOM pATROL (which is SUPPOSED to be weird!).
I bought the New X-men and HATED it! Some of the art was ok, but mostly it was trash. I didn't like the characterization of all the main characters, they just felt really full of themselves all the damn time. The only character I liked in that run was Phantomex, and it was actually the main reason I wanted to get the omni. (Uncanny X-force!!
I had to exchange my Volume 2 with IST because the first one I got had about 30 pages in the middle of the book with folds and ripples imprinted into them. I don't have Volume 1, but now I feel compelled to get it. I've got mixed feelings on Morrison's run. Damien is the best part of it and my wife loves the Dick/Damien Batman & Robin run, which is why I picked up this Omnis. I did like the first few issues of Batman Inc that came out after, as Batman Inc was a cool idea, but then the book got too convoluted and it felt like single issue stories were being dragged out to be 3-4 issues. I do wish DC had balls and kept Bruce Wayne dead.
Wow gem, i was hype for seen this review beacuse i wanna buy this run of morrison's batman, i love his work on JLA and i was expect a great opinion on this one, offcourse i have to judge myself but im kinda worried this is not what i spect, hope i love this run or i gonna have to sealed 😂 thx for your opinion, that helps to know what to buy i others opinions
well this volume is a little bit confusing, because they put in the omnibus the return of bruce of wayne a 6 issue mini series and if you not read final crisis this would be like, ummm very weird stuff, i don´t know Morrison would be hard to explain if you dont know his perspective of the super heroes world, so its ok if gem doesnt liked Morrison´s run he´s not the only one
man batman is tough...but, he has a lot of stand alone stories. Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Long Halloween. I also suggest the batman new 52 run. There are tpbs for those and an omnibus coming out soon
Got to buy this two omnibus. Might get broke in doing it, but i read some of it online and i personalny love it. But i agree that story is a bit chaotic. P.s. Just man... C...C...C...shame on you mister!! :-)
Love this review. I’m not a fan of what little Morrison I’ve read. I’m like you, I don’t like Batman in space or any of that bullshit. Batman needs The Punisher Max treatment. Batman vs street level shit. I bought this book recently because it was under 50 and because I wanted to read what I missed out and have something with Dick as Batman. I remember kind of liking Dick as Batman. He isn’t Bruce and it’s a refreshing change. You’re right about the art, they could have done better in that regard. I’m going to have tough time when I get around to reading this.........
Volume 1 was better than 2 but both of them read as if there were missing pieces or issues, things jump around a lot at least to me. Not the worst batman run ive ever read but MAN will all 3 volumes look good on the shelf.
Morrison is incredibly talented but you have to come from a very particular mindset to get what he’s doing. I can understand why someone like you or fans with a similar attitude and/or perspective wouldn’t get into it.
People who tend to lean away from less traditional storytelling in comics and can’t get into art that’s more off the beaten path. Perfect example would be you and Mike Allred during your X-Force video. Mike Allred is a really great artist in my and many people’s opinion but he’s definitely not your traditional superhero artist.
I get that. I’m the same with the first X-Force issues. They’re very entertaining but it’s hard for me to get passed Liefeld‘ dart. The moment Capullo took over it clicked for me.
Can't watch, on my to read list lol! Didn't these comics come out around the same time as the Batwoman Elegy comic that the show is based on? I remember reading that and a few issues where Batman can't control Damian and Professor Pyg is running around wreaking havoc.
@@thanosdarkseid8695 I got close. Vol 1 & 2 I got for $35 each. HA! I was off by $10. LOL Also, I'm not new to buying these books. I look in about 20 different places for books online and find brand new for cheap. I also go to a dozen comic bookstores, regular bookstores and thrift stores. I found a Batman Golden Age Omnibus brand new for $35 as well. You just gotta look around or keep holding onto a book in your Amazon cart and the price will dramatically drop.
Yeah it Confused me too, because it didn't include final crisis. I wonder if final crisis will be in vol. 3? If so, they fucked up the reading order. If not then.... Why? Still worth the read tho. But its abit daft they left out final crisis after R. I. P. I havnt read final crisis so that skipped material THREW ME THE FUCK OFF.
Yea that art is so weird looking to me i haven’t read all of it but its definitely got a weird vibe i don’t get why they make a run so jumpy and confusing it frustrates the hell out of me and makes me wanna go back and read it again and i do and im still like wtf man🤣 i guess the smoking and reading doesn’t help
Cause he wear a kufi, it don’t mean that he bright ’Cause you don’t understand him, it don’t mean that he nice It just means you don’t understand all the bullshit that he write
I like Morrison, but his Batman is very confusing, if you don't read Batman before his run, and the Golden and Silver Age Batman, you are not going to understand anything in his run because Morrison does a lot of references to the Golden and Silver Age stories, it's fucking confusing.
Bit late to the party but I tried to get into grant Morrisons run after the first review because I thought it looked interesting. It's confusing, weird and made me contemplate if I even like batman. Some of the ideas were cool but the execution was shit. Couldn't even get through the first book, would hate to see what the second has to offer. Sorry grant Morrison. 🤷♂️
Gem Mint doesn't like Morrison's Batman finding it too confusing. (checks Gem Mint's videos and sees a preference towards Marvel) well, that explains that.
I applaud your honesty when you do a review. Professor PYG is a man who has a problem with pcp and meth he also is a opra singer who takes his victims and basically makes them into semi stable zombies who usually die of a brain hemorrhage due to his experiments on them calls them dolltrons . So, i'm painting Doppels web lines (and so far the web lines alone have taken about 50 hours)... ANYWAYS, this vid is playing in the background through autoplay, and all i hear is you bitchin about Caveman Batman...LOL.
you got this all wrong....firstly the batman and robin run with Dick as batman is terrific comics....and the whole run takes Batman has having experienced every one of his comics, including those not realistic...this is the point, comics aren't realistic. These guys run around in lycra with powers that don't exist....suspend your belief is Granst motto and an attack on Alan Moores attempts to be serious....its comics....have fun, be positive...these guys never die, they can't otherwise there is no comic....
You just saved me some $$$ I remember not liking the Grant Morrison's Batman run in floppies when I dumped the book. I was considering this because it might read better as a single book, and I enjoy Tomasi's run which has plot holes which relate to this run.
Yea the pirate Batman is wack but when I seen the cowboy Batman it made me think like hmm would I like to see a western world based Batman hmmmmmmmm would kinda just be zorro on crack
Decided to let one of the haters get that first thumbs down today just so they can see what it feels like. Double dipping ain't good for your health as a collector.
Man I was really looking forward to getting these omnibus but now I’m not quite sure. So what exactly do you have to read before you get into this run?
@brett5569 Batman by Grant Volume 1 sets up all you need to read before getting Volume 2. you do not need to read Final Crisis. Final Crisis get a brief recap of all the events you need to understand going into Vol. 2. @Gem Mint Collectibles it's really starting to sound like you just rushed through this reading.
You really missed something here. Batman was drawn Like that on purpose. It’s not the real Batman. It’s Dick in Batman’s suit. It would be too big and wrinkly.
I agree Gem this volume was a disappointment compared to the first one. It had a few good “Joker” moments and Damian was cool but that’s about all I can remember liking about it. Return of Bruce Wayne was one of the worst Bats stories I’ve ever read. The only other Morrison I’ve read is New X-Men and I loved that run. As has been said with these stories you need to know DC history very well and I’m not that caught up. I’ll still pick up Vol 3 because I want to read Batman INC. at least they’re cheap Omni’s.
I read the first issue of final crisis and absolutely hated it. If this is along the same lines I'll have no trouble passing on these. Grant Morrison tries way too hard in his writing and completely loses the message he's trying to convey by being to fancy.
I did not like Grant's Batman run, real dark time for me as a Batman fan. I think Grant was on drugs his entire Batman run....just absolutely atrocious
I know people like him but for me it sums up a dark time for the big 2 in the industry. Too many overlapping, confusing stories.. you couldnt get new readers into comics because they didnt know where to start. Thats why image and dark horse grew. You have issue 1 and you go from there. I enjoyed long halloween, black mirror, i'll pick up the snyder owls omnibus
It's ok not to love everything. Just like what you like.

There is a trade they put out called Time and the Batman. It kind of explains what happened to batman in final crisis. I wish they collected it in these omnis but oh well. Morrison stuff just gotta be confusing i guess lol
Those issues (Batman 700-702) are in this book
So Which Batman Comics to Start in Paperback?
Final Crisis is impossible to understand
I like Morrison but he can be very dense. You have to know all of DC history to fully understand his run.
This is my favorite comic book review channel.
thanks brother
well this volume is a little bit confusing, because they put in the omnibus the return of bruce of wayne a 6 issue mini series and if you not read final crisis this would be like, ummm very weird stuff, i don´t know Morrison would be hard to explain if you dont know his perspective of the super heroes world, so its ok if gem doesnt liked Morrison´s run he´s not the only one
For a new comer like myself, where should I start with Batman?? Totall lost lol
man batman is tough...but, he has a lot of stand alone stories. Killing Joke, Dark Knight Returns, Long Halloween. I also suggest the batman new 52 run. There are tpbs for those and an omnibus coming out soon
I purchase the killing joke absolute, first time ever reading it! Great story but felt too short, especially for the size of the book lol
Got to buy this two omnibus. Might get broke in doing it, but i read some of it online and i personalny love it. But i agree that story is a bit chaotic.
P.s. Just man... C...C...C...shame on you mister!! :-)
Will you be reading Batman Black Mirror because it takes place at the same time as when Dick Grayson is robin
i will... ill knock that out soon.
Batman is one of the best characters, keep up the great work.
I loved the run and have collected both volumes but I totally get you. Great review anyways!
hello i am italian fan, Which one is the best series of batman?
Batman by jeph loeb and tim sale. The long halloween series
Do you have to constantly clean your statues/ why don’t you get glass on your bestas?
you're supposed to... i do sometimes. they stopped making the glass doors for bestas and a lot of statues poke out of them anyway
Dude Batman Inc is solid...too much filler for sure but the final act was great. Not my favorite but definitely unique.
Can't win them all. I'll probably still pick this up cause I like to complete runs.
Great review I haven't ready it yet, but also don't like when you get into it and get lost so quick.
The whole spine thing,Morrison wanders to kill Damien early but DC wouldn’t let him because he was liked so much so he was pushed to Batman inc
I can understand why someone like you or fans with a similar attitude and/or perspective wouldn’t get into it.
what is someone like me?
People who tend to lean away from less traditional storytelling in comics and can’t get into art that’s more off the beaten path. Perfect example would be you and Mike Allred during your X-Force video. Mike Allred is a really great artist in my and many people’s opinion but he’s definitely not your traditional superhero artist.
fair enough...i did enjoy New X-Men even though I didnt like the art
I get that. I’m the same with the first X-Force issues. They’re very entertaining but it’s hard for me to get passed Liefeld‘ dart. The moment Capullo took over it clicked for me.
Jimlee has the best art
Can't watch, on my to read list lol! Didn't these comics come out around the same time as the Batwoman Elegy comic that the show is based on? I remember reading that and a few issues where Batman can't control Damian and Professor Pyg is running around wreaking havoc.
yes that is around the same time
Grant Morrison's JLA run is my favorite superhero run of all time.
But his Batman run was, like the dude said, whack.
Favorite batman run
Very interesting!! Batman is my favorite superhero. You should do a reaction video to the cats trailer.
A true review. Thanks. It sounds like a mess that Omnibus. I don't think I'll spend my hard-earned money on that. Unless I find it for under $25. HA!
dude ya not findin the 3 grant omni's under $25 wtf you must be new to buying then...they get oop then priced high cheapest i see is $40 range!....
What are the shelves you use for your omnibus? Thanks
kallax from IKEA
@@GemMintCollectibles Thanks bro. Love the channel content!
Your not trippin, Grant trips often when he writes. I have been say that for years. I like the Batman and Robin run when Tomasi took over.
Cause he wear a kufi, it don’t mean that he bright
’Cause you don’t understand him, it don’t mean that he nice
It just means you don’t understand all the bullshit that he write
Gem ya'll should do a Witcher trailer reaction video. The world is legit.
Gem Mint doesn't like Morrison's Batman finding it too confusing.
(checks Gem Mint's videos and sees a preference towards Marvel)
well, that explains that.
I like what I like

This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.
I applaud your honesty when you do a review. Professor PYG is a man who has a problem with pcp and meth he also is a opra singer who takes his victims and basically makes them into semi stable zombies who usually die of a brain hemorrhage due to his experiments on them calls them dolltrons . He also has a mommy issue and likes to cause himself physical pain especially to his dick and abdominal region It's group that he runs with is called the circus of strange .pyg also represents year of the PYG or pygmalion. The Domino's that joker has represented the cartel and the bone train. How is spinal surgery wack I had spinal surgery two years ago and the anesthesiologist still controls me from time to time.
So, i'm painting Doppels web lines (and so far the web lines alone have taken about 50 hours)... ANYWAYS, this vid is playing in the background through autoplay, and all i hear is you bitchin about Caveman Batman...LOL.
lol wack
Yeah I'm not a fan at all, thanks for your honest review.
you got this all wrong....firstly the batman and robin run with Dick as batman is terrific comics....and the whole run takes Batman has having experienced every one of his comics, including those not realistic...this is the point, comics aren't realistic.
So what exactly do you have to read before you get into this run?
seems to me you need to read final crisis
@brett5569
Batman by Grant Volume 1 sets up all you need to read before getting Volume 2. you do not need to read Final Crisis. Final Crisis get a brief recap of all the events you need to understand going into Vol. 2.
@Gem Mint Collectibles it's really starting to sound like you just rushed through this reading.
Yes this is hard to understand maybe try and read it a second time?
This is $34 on Amazon so I came on here for the review and now I'm keeping my precious money!. Thanx for the review.
lol its $34 for a reason
We know Gem doesn’t like Frank Quietly hahahaha
lol i really dont...its important to know what you like and what you dont
I did not like Grant's Batman run, real dark time for me as a Batman fan. I think Grant was on drugs his entire Batman run....just absolutely atrocious
I completely agree, I think the time travel and large scale superpowered crap ruins his down to earth sort of status
Grant Morrison always fails with trying to be to woke lmao
I know people like him but for me it sums up a dark time for the big 2 in the industry. Too many overlapping, confusing stories.. you couldnt get new readers into comics because they didnt know where to start. Thats why image and dark horse grew. You have issue 1 and you go from there. I enjoyed long halloween, black mirror, i'll pick up the snyder owls omnibus
Yep i'll pass this run. Great review.
I like a good amount of Morrison's run, but it was kinda comic booky at times, if that makes sense.
I think the expectation of Grant Morrison’s writing complexity becomes the readers self fulfilling prophesy. I’m guilty of that. Nice vid Bro.
Haven’t read this yet now I’m thinking 🤔..... all hell no lol
This book looks very lackluster, definitely gonna pass on this series lol
Read the trade that introduces Damien years ago and it was good. I have similar feelings about batman so this is probably a pass for me
