- In spring 2019, North Bergen High School went viral with their Alien: The Play. A few months later Adam visits the New Jersey school, where art teacher Steven Defendini gives him a tour of the students' previous builds (including a full-sized Incredible Hulk and Millennium Falcon) leading up to the stunning Alien artifacts.

In case you missed it, the students gifted him the Kane spacesuit! It's AMAZING. th-cam.com/video/bKrpiCqZq_8/w-d-xo.html
If my school would have done stuff like this I'd have actually payed more attention
BUILDING, CARPENTRY, PLUMBING ETC ETC...........THESE ARE HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES...........HOPEFULLY SOMEONE SEES THE LIGHT
We need to start a gofundme to help them get sayyyy Phil Tippet to coe in and pass on his knowledge to the next generation... yes i am aware he dosen't people much, but my two interactions were civil enough; that said i was and am an adult.

Adam my mom works there
"These guys never leave, I have to kick them out!"
Killed it with this line because it clearly shows that you are doing EVERYTHING right when you reach
the point at which you have literally force teens to leave school.
Also notice that what he is not saying is that he obviously is also staying at school. Probably far more than what is expected and required of any teacher.
This rings true for mostly every club at NBHS (former student here). You could go around an hour after school's finished and see so many students around their own clubs or doing their own projects in their free time. Another reason why I love this school and will always be thankful for the time I've had there. Faculty and staff really know their stuff.
This teacher is EXACTLY what schools need. I sincerely hope everyone in this community recognizes and appreciates the work he puts into setting these kids' creativity free. Takes an impressive amount of ambition and bravery.
Fund the arts
Sooo can't agree more!
Props to the school administration who managed not to freak out about this. That's rare these days. Also, amazing work from the kids.
You mean that huge cock and balls? Lol
00meat Plays i graduatedfrom thus school in 96. Always had n amazing art n technology dept.
@@barberwinning You must have skipped Language Arts.
@@christophermcbride1133 sophomore year English in this school 💀
Sooo loved this and totally agree!
This is absolutely marvelous.
Totally agree. Sooo freaking cool!
I think at least one of the students will be a movie modelmaker in the future.
If Adams loves your work, it's like beeing knighted.
I wish I would had an art teacher like Steven.
@@zebunker yes¬!!!!!!
He gave me a 50 as a grade😭
When I watched 'Alien: The Play', it took me back to that night,
in a dark movie theater, back in 1979, seeing the movie for the first time.
Thank you Mr. Defendini.
EXACTLY! Loved this sooo much!
THIS NEEDS TO BE SUPPORTED AND ENCOURAGED!
This is what is missing from most educational experiences. Inspired engagement with hands on real world problem solving. We all learn by doing and by god are they ever doing it. I hope this takes root and becomes a nation wide thing. After hours and a shoestring budget theres no reason it cant be done everywhere. Well done guys. Can't wait to see what have in store for us in the future!
Class, I forgot to grade your quizzes. I was building a blood cannon.
Absolutely amazing work though
*still wins 'Teacher Of The Year'*
Teachers like him are a blessing and a godsend. I wish I had a teacher like him.
Can't agree more. AMAZING!
1:10 the look of pure happiness and joy an Adam's face at "to see if we can"!
Yeah, that cracked me up.
I don’t comment on thinks, but I think it’s time I broke that trend. This video is one of the most moving things I’ve ever seen, and as a person going to school to be a teacher it does nothing but move me, put ideas in my head, and tears in my eyes. Adam, I can’t thank you enough for giving these incredible teachers and students (even more of) a way to show their work to the world and show what they are capable of. Incredible.
One of the most fantastically uplifting videos on TH-cam right now. Such energy and passion for supporting and encouraging kids to do more. I very much echo Adams sentiment. This makes me want to make stuff.
We soooo can't agree more. THIS is what schools need more of!
The students of North Bergen High School are very lucky to have Steven as a teacher, he's doing great work with them. It's also awesome that Adam went to visit, I'm sure the kids were super excited.
As an artist, and I was one of those kids in school who was ALWAYS in the Art Dept and helping w school play backdrops, props etc. and a huge Alien fan, I can appreciate this to the fullest. Props (see what I did there) to all of those kids, the teacher and the school for allowing them to be SO creative. We need more schools like this.
This is some of the most inspiring work I've ever seen, and that includes my 25 yrs in film designing and building sets and props. I got my start in high school stagecraft with an excellent theater teacher Mr. Taylor. You teachers affect some of our lives forever. Thank you.
Totally agree. LOVED this soooo much!
Kudos to Adam Savage for giving this fantastic teacher a platform to feature the amazing work done by him and his students. My niece went to this school and I got to meet him and many of the students in the cast and I can say that they are just as bright and inspiring in real life as they appear online. Congratulations all around for their talent, creativity and incredible work ethic.
I hope you're reading all of these comments and enjoying the praise Mr Defendini. You're doing wonders for these kids buddy. You're teaching much, much more than a subject. You're teaching a wealth of life skills. From mental stability through creativity to practical application, drive and motivation to pushing limits and boundaries.
And hopefully some of the young people who have had input into these incredible creations are reading the comments too. You guys are amazing. You're on path's to achieve in life based on your energy and drive.
A shout out from the UK. You guys are all brilliant!
My old High School! I miss and love this place. Everyone is so nice, the teachers are great and the faculty is welcoming every single moment. We've always had very talented people graduate from this school so I'm not surprised to see this. Thanks for showing the world the hidden gem of art, music and talent that is North Bergen High School, Adam. #NBHS
I love how you can still enjoy a hand puppet like it’s the first time you use one, great to see so much passion and thanks for sharing! These kids made some next level stuff with a bunch of leftover scraps, shows great talent and creativity!
This video is literally one of my most favorite one you have done to date. It made me wish all teachers were as awesome as this guy is.
Totally agree.
I would've loved to have attended a high school where I could've done this stuff.
Totally agree. THIS is what schools need more of.
This seriously makes the happy tears start to well up. What a wonderful teacher and school administration. And to the students at North Bergen High.... way to go!!!
You know you've made it when Adam geeks out! It truly is awesome work! Great way of getting the best out of the kids. These are some memories that will last, especially having that added sprinkle of Adam's approval! Hats off to all the teachers/staff involved, as well as the kids. Knocked it out of the park!
I am absolutely floored by the ingenuity of the students. And it's pretty clear that the students understand that what their teacher is doing will help them out in life, no matter what they end up doing.
So happy these young adults are being guided with such unlimited outlook. Also great to see a school who are will gives these kids so much freedom to learn, rather then box them in to a safe space.
This is fantastic. I'm so happy / excited to see this level of making in high school. These kids and teachers are amazing!! Keep it up, and great job everyone!!
Can't agree with you more Ben! LOVE THIS!
The school system desperately needs more teachers like this
Steven Defendini is the high school teacher that you remember the rest of your life. Maybe we wasn't always nice to you or saw things your way but he (or she) ALWAYS made you get the best from yourself. Those teachers taught you things about yourself that you didn't realize at the time, but later understood the true meaning of their life lessons. Well done. Mr. Defendini.
Felt quite emotional watching that. The enthusiasm of the teacher and the resulting empowerment of the kids got me...
What an incredible teacher. He has enriched their lives. He's enriching my life in this video!
Totally agree.
I wish my children had a chance like this at the schools they went to. Congratulations on the effort you put in and the enthusiasm you generate in your students.
Thank you for providing a link at the end of the video to the entire encore production of Alien. So cool that Sigourney Weaver herself made an appearance. Although any recording is better than no recording, I did notice there was a production camera on tripod in the front filming the show. Boy I'd LOVE to see THAT footage!
Absolutely beyond happy that this is happening in the world, THIS IS AMAZING! There needs to be more of this!
Tim - we sooo can't agree more! LOVED this!
I wish I had an art teacher like him in school. Lovely how he encourages the children to be creative!
Every time I make a model or work on a prop, I learn a new skill. This is absolutely wonderful. I can't applaud this type of learning enough. And the beauty of it is that there's no extent to the creative imagination.
Thank you Adam, for showing us this. It is wonderful that you take the time in encourage them.
You're great!
As a filmmaker now; this made me cry! I would have loved having a teacher like this!!!!
The world needs LOTS more teachers like this guy!
What a special teacher. Incredible dedication and results and I'm sure these kids will never forget the experience of working on these amazing props.
I went to a public school where our plays were literally reading off a script.. good to see some people actually care about their students learning, wish I had that opportunity! :D
Can't agree more. THIS is what we need in our schools. LOVE THIS!
This is why Tested is one of my favorite channels.
Absolutely beautiful and heartwarming stuff, probably my favourite Tested video so far. Sat with my jaw dropped throughout the whole thing, thank you so much for showing his!
Good grief - we used to make clay houses or paint dead hedgehogs at HS - absolutely amazing and awe inspiring- what a school and teacher - the fact he mentioned all the students names - deepest respect Sir!
THAT is how you teach.
No matter the subject if you teach like this guy does the kids will learn far more. The problem i had in most classes was boredom. Very few teachers made the class interesting and engaging for the students. I know im a hands on learner and when I'm told to take notes and take a test i end up not retaining anything.
This is so inspiring! To see the kids be encouraged to dream and create is fantastic! My son who was home- schooled was blessed to not only experience this scale of creation an acting on stage, and learn robotics and engineering as well! It is the total experience that helps them grow and to think creatively! Awesome!
This teacher needs an award on a national level. Show other teachers how not to be stuffy pricks who stifle our children everyday.
Totally agree. Soooo loved this!
Since the comments are turned off on the student video, I'll say it here. YOU KIDS ARE AWESOME! Keep creating!
I still can't get over how smart is was to use a marching band drum harness as a base for the front plates and the backpack. I wore one for 4 years and I never thought to use one for costumes until I watched Adam covering the costumes. Genius.
Alien is one of my favorite movies of all time. I would pay admission to go see this in a theater.
WORLD TOUR!!!!
This is truly awesome !! More schools need to have this program. It’s just such a good thing for kids at all levels to get engaged in something meaningful and STEM related. Great job!!
I am totally blown away!! The world needs more teachers like this gentleman! Bravo 👏
3:13 Adam is like I’ll get you a 3D printer
I love this so much. The kids involved in this program are incredibly lucky.
this made me realize there's way too many props and things and machines i wanted to build but never did because i thought i didn't have good enough tools or materials... so now I'm building Leia's blaster from cardboard and pvc tubes :'))
never too late to start building things
0:00 Mr. Alva of Alexander High School in Laredo TX, wherever you are, i salute you! You truly made forensic science my favorite class of jr year.
Proud to see my high school on the map!!!! Keep up the great work!
Love passionate teachers.
You will forever remain in these kid’s memories!!!!!!
This is soo cool. I would love to do something like this when I was in school. Very inspirational teacher. Hats off!
Thank you Adam, but most of all, thank you Mr. Defendini for doing what you do with your kids. AMAZING. (also thank you to North Bergen High School for letting the kids be kids.)
When the administration is cooperative, the teacher motivated and the students engaged.
"Our WHY for everything we ever do is just to see if we CAN - We are going to present the problem and then if we have to figure out the solution." - It sounds like actual education is happening - Good on you, sir, for inspiring these kids.
Great teacher and school. Awesome opportunity for the students!
"We must go on. We have to go on!"
That's real inspiring. Great work.
What a great teacher, what a great school and experience for those young people....makes me wish I had such a thing back when I was at school
That is amazing what he does for the students to learn and he is a very inspiring person...huge kudos to him and the school plus the parents!!!
It makes me soo happy to see creativity encouraged like this but also incredibly jealous. My Highschool favoured sports a hundred times over the arts. Our Art and museum trips were cancelled so the school's multiple sports teams could afford to go overseas for games or have a bigger budget for new equipment. Meanwhile us art students were left with researching artists from computer screens or miniscule, poorly printed papers from the teacher :( Well done to this teacher, i wish he had been mine.
completely amazing! thank you for making this video and documenting their creations. just wow! truly inspiring. thanks again tested.
This is fantastic! I wish something like this was available when I was a kid. I'm in my 30s and just now am able to do any sort of crafting without people freaking out.
I remember when I was in high school anything creative like this was actively discouraged. An example: the art teacher one day had us draw anything we wanted. We then went outside and she started a fire and burned all our drawings in front of us, some excuse of "letting go of what you know" but the habit of her destroying work continued throughout the year.
Wow!! I just watched the play! Thank you Adam for bringing this to a larger audience!
This is great. I think the kids not only learn what they can do but also the value of working with a team.
Well done sir! This is incrdible. And kudos to your students for their incredible work and talent to bring these builds to life. I want a life-sized Hulk now.
Love the practical application they are learning and can take with them. So good to use topics that interest them and can fire the imagination. Really impressive.
I nominate Steven Defendini for the very first Harryhausen award for inspiring such creativity, awe, and wonder!!!
I so wish I had a teacher like this way back when. Kudos to him and the students.
The imagination and creativity is beyond heartwarming! I am amazed and inspired :)
This is amazing. I wish I had a teacher like that when I was a kid. Great video Adam, thanks for showcasing this!
Wow, Adam did a great John Hurt impression!
This is amazing!!! What a great teacher. Its good to see someone who is doing such creative things with kids
Just watched the hour and a half video of the play/performance...it was absolutely amazing. Found out about it through the CGI/Adam Savage prop breakdown that just released.
These kids were amazing!
Most deserved like ive ever given
This Guy is so inspirational, and what he is sharing with the students are life lessons not just school lessons , Thanks for sharing this great stuff with us Adam.
What an amazing and so inspiring teacher.
TV show idea: kids have to build something in x days and then this teacher and you go judge it. Two schools against each other and if they win they get a cash insentive to buy materials to keep building. Rule is it has to be scrap/ rubbish etc, nothing fancy like 3D printers
This is why there should be more funding in schools for things like this, to inspire the next generation of creative minds
Check out the description guys! The full play is there to watch :D
Sadly, not that video anymore. However there is one from Space Command on TH-cam that has most of the play.
Most inspiring. I would like to see an oral history of the first mention of "Alien." That gesture of audacity and then support that was echoed and raised to this level is the focus for me.
Who ever gave a thumbs down must be jealous...
These are outstanding projects.
I have come to the conclusion that there exist a small group of people that has made it their lives mission to downvote any and all videos on TH-cam and suffer under the illusion that we (or indeed anyone) care.
I love project like that! The kind of stuff that keeps kids pationnated and fully commited. Find something you love and you'll most likely succeed in life :)
I want to go back to high school to have this guy as a teacher...
Incredible! Very uplifting. Thanks for covering this.
What an inspirational teacher to have, what an amazing thing he is doing. Awesome.
I hope this place produces an army of future Adam Savage's with their own paths in building as a career, or hobby, or artistic expression of any type.
Hey, nice profile picture!
This is incredible! It needs to be shared all over!
This is an amazingly inspiring video! We are doing cardboard sculpting in ceramics n object making class soon, and this gave me a new level of?? Understanding?? Ive always loved this channel's content, but videos of kids my age having enthusiasm like this just brings me over the moon! 💕
These are the Teachers we Deserve, And the Teachers we Need.
Absolutely fantastic!
Oh my gosh! LOVE THIS! We just made a trivia video on Alien so this popped up in our feed and we are soooo happy! LOVE this. Watching the play right now! THANK YOU for sharing!
I just love how proud this guy is of his kids!!
The world needs more teachers like Mr Defendini.
Top man.
My brain: "Bergen? What the hell is he doing here in Norway?" ... "Oh."
Ill Will Bill you were not alone on that...🤪😂🤣
