Long ago I worked at Intel Corporation. One of the sayings of semiconductor products is "die yields are exponential". What that means is as the die (semiconductor circuit) shrinks, the precision in design is so important that there are no defects in the design becomes all important. A 10% error in circuits will result in a 25% or higher defect rate in the completed circuit die, and a 1/4 or more of the wafer is waste. When the original i486 and Pentium CPU wafters were produced, it was not unusual for working chips to be a handful per 8 inch or 12 inch wafer.
Correct me if I’m wrong but the Chinese actually have more than one vector for their nuclear deterrence, they also have strategic bombers: the Xi’an H-6. It’s a Chinese variation of the Soviet Tu-16. Former ASML boss Peter Wennink says the US-China "chip wars" are mainly ideological in nature, and is warning it will likely take decades for the dispute to play out. The Dutch chipmaking equipment biz has been caught in the crossfire of Washington's battle to curb China's technology advances, finding itself under ever increasing restrictions regarding what it can sell into the country and even how it conducts business. Wennink, who retired in April after 25 years with the company, made the remarks during an interview with Netherlands-based radio station BNR last weekend. He said the clashes between the US and Beijing over computer chips are mainly ideological and not based on substance and practice. This has had an impact on ASML's business, he told the station, with Washington increasingly putting the squeeze on the company's exports to China, which represents its largest market after Taiwan.

He is absolutely clueless on semiconductors. China already made 5nm chips. And just made their first domestic produced DUV and EUV is 2 years away. People don't understand it
@fubolibs4218 That's not the only thing. Around 14nm, gate sizes only shrink marginally. 10nm onward, it packing technology along with marketing. It's an easier problem to solve. Those older processes he casually dismisses is what gets used in everything that matters from cars to rockets.
@@Aerrow62 right. Plus they are approaching physics limit. And China has been doing massive research into photonics computing (lasers) that doesn't need the low nm etching that normal semiconductors do. By sanctioning those equipment China is now dominating all 14nm and lower chips which the 3nm iPhone chip is useless without the other ones.
@@fubolibs4218 Photonics are far from practical for computing at this time. Any gains in performance is offset by the energy consumption and size. They super bulky. I would not go as far as saying China 'dominates' low end of the chip fabrication. There are plenty of mature facilities that have scale. What China has is a large ecosystem of original equipment. That's one of a kind. But eventually it doesn't matter. At the end, if you can't get sales, all fabs will make losses. Any high-end fab burns $10-15 million dollars a day. Low end ones still burn a few million a day. Fab setup cost are also higher than before for even older nodes. So if you don't have customers locked in with continuous orders, everything falls apart. Most countries are about to realize that "semiconductor national security" will cost them their economy. There was a news that Intel refused to build a fab when they were told that they can only sell in US and Europe. The company said, unless there is a large market that can consume 10 million chips a year, the fab cost will never be recovered. 10nm is not feasible if your customer base is 20 million people. You need a billion customer market for some of these expensive capital manufacturing to be possible.

Why
Use vpn and buy from ukraine. I pay $3/month
Thank you for the videos!
Nice to see an actual vid from you. So many scammers using your audio on ai channels. It’s disgusting. Keep up your good work! Hopefully you have some staff that can start striking those other channels
Thanks for posting for free. Much appreciated. :)
Peter one-week-later zeihan
Man that week was rough. I watch these at work on lunch. Glad to be able to start that again. I just got a house, wish I could afford the patron.
Stop spending $300 a month on fast food 😂.
Lol, no Peter, here's slight clarification: the Definition of a submarine is that it only sinks when you want it to and is the only type of vessel that can unsink itself. Torpedo's are only used when you want it to stay sunk. Love the video, thanks for still posting to TH-cam.
lol. 👆
Thank you for still posting these to TH-cam. 🙏
What more could you want last week's news today
He could have posted it one month from now it's a long term issue, most are, he very rarely does short term issues and he has covered some of this previously with updates as necessary, it's not a big issue!?!
Thank you for the useful information..
Feels like a tv infomercial.
Thanks for keeping it free, Sir. ❤
TH-cam has the best commenting system and usually has the best comments because there are so many people on the platform and the TH-cam “algorithm” directs people to videos they are likely to comment on. Patreon can’t compete with this and quite frankly the comments are often the best part of anything you find on the Web. If comments are turned off then I will likely not watch. People also like the relative anonymity of TH-cam.
I don’t have any Patreon channels that I pay for at all but if there was one that I’d pay for it’s Peter’s . I just appreciate his candor on all things of this world.
Thanks Peter for not abandoning TH-cam !
All very interesting.
Respect your audience
Love your update on Yotube no matter one week delay. Thank you.
Thank you for the free video!
It's not free, you spent the most valuable commodity ever on it...
When something is free.. “your the product”
Poor people need geopolitical news too 🤷♂️
lol
I am here to watch the scenery, some of the best on youtube, thankyou.
Whoever convinced him to setup his Patreon this way - REALLY made a mistake here
He'll just become less significant, having only older news. tsk tsk
Really? I don't think so.
Really?? That's how a lot of content creators handle their content. I don't know if it works for all of them, but it clearly works for some, as they continue to do it.
Love to see an analysis on the accuracy of Zeihan’s predictions before committing to Patreon.
Creators and their “free video” statements, we have to pay for our internet connections and either watch adverts (time) or pay for YT premium. There’s no such thing as free.
Ahem... well. Not exactly.
Lots of free wifi out there. I watch an absurd amount of youtube without paying for it. That watching is making an impact on the world from the electricity cost, but no money.
You sound like the type to about free cookies because you had to spend money on gas to drive to the bakery for the free cookies.
Stop your whining. 😮.
@@HoboGardenerBen If you think free WiFi is free you haven’t got a clue mate.
Thanks for the video Peter!
Correct me if I’m wrong but the Chinese actually have more than one vector for their nuclear deterrence, they also have strategic bombers: the Xi’an H-6. It’s a Chinese variation of the Soviet Tu-16.
From what I read, they are developing a stealth strategic bomber that should enter service in the 2030’s.
The US Navy had a nuclear submarine sink at the pier. It was the USS Guitarro and it happened in May 1969.
I was thinking the same thing
Did they hide it?
The fact that you know about it tells the difference between that and the chinese cover-up disaster.
Yup the chinese are indeed at 1970s US tech level.
@@MA_KA_PA_TIE Not even 1970s... apparently.
I appreciate you are still doing the free videos. Given YT pay policies it makes sense that you shifted over to patreon.

After I raised up to 325k trading with her I bought a new House and a car here in the states 🇺🇸🇺🇸 also paid for my son's surgery (Oscar). Glory to God.shalom.
I do know Ms. Susan Jane Christy, I also have even become successful....
Absolutely! I've heard stories of people who started with little to no knowledge but made it out victoriously thanks to Ms. Susan Jane Christy.
Yapping about patreon etc stops at 1:24
Thank you
Xi Jinping: our subs are so advanced, they can sink without the assistance of a torpedo.
New Zealand warship sank this month. Guess you don't know that.
@@myintmaunmaun Without assistance of a torpedo? Oh no, China has competition.
If you actually look at the photo more closely, you would notice that the black silhouette is actually just the shadow of the crane to it's left. Also, why in the world would they build a submarine in Wuhan? Do you know where Wuhan is? Go look at a map.
Ah yes, the 10 meter sub that somehow sunk in 5 meters deep water in a shipyard that doesn't even produce nuclear submarines. You people aren't smart.
@@Flightman453 I see you want to split hairs, technically subs are supposed to sink, the problem is when they flood.
Yaaaay free video!
I've seen the Dutch kill switch in action.
At 5pm in every Austrian skiing resort all through the winter season they deploy it among themselves.
Red bull and vodka mostly, but any other drink as well, really
Hahaha
Thanks Peter! I needed that. 😉
Excuse me but some might even argue theirs are the BEST submarines: when they submerge, they STAY submerged.
Love your work Peter.
The Chinese have made great strides militarily since 2000. We can't just assume they won't continue to learn and improve swiftly.
Everyone adapts, the question is who can adapt most nimbly and swiftly.
They are behind the wave but close enough to be competitive in equipment. Their weakness is stuff that requires advanced tech and software.
Thanks for the free videos, it's nice to follow up on your thoughts, but paid subscriptions are just not in my budget.
The reflection on the shades! That's all I saw in the video.
Thanks, still worthwhile and fun.
I went back to check if actually 7 days passed since last video (as promissed *sigh*) and yeah, it's true.
Thank you for still giving out free videos, even if they are a week behind the new ones.
lol the delay kinda makes real time events kinda pointless.
TH-cam might be worth just doing non real time updates / analysis
Will be interesting if this puts more scrutiny on how accurate / inaccurate of his predictions.
Non-real time doesnt immediately translate to irrelevant. If time sensitive information is actionable to you then it merits the value demanded from his patreon.
Hey Peter, don't mind a delay. I like information that's maturing anyway 😊
begging for cash really dampens the mood man
Explain?
Can I ask about set up? Looks in sunglasses like your just filming on your phone!!! How so stable??? How is the sound so good?
Thanks to you Peter. Following your recommendation, I started researching into Abby Joseph Cohen Services. Thankfully it was a little over a year ago now, I started an lnvestment with Abby's Services and that allowed me to be on much MUCH more stable ground in the face of global financial upheaval.
So thank you, your channel, and your employees. For what it's worth, it made a difference for me and my little family.
Abby Joseph Cohen Services has really set the standard for others to follow, we love her here in Canada 🇨🇦 as she has been really helpful and changed lots of life's

he is a neo liberal and Chinese bias. What the hell is he saying Chinese have lower end chips they have sent satellites to the far side of the moon to pick up soil samples and other rock materials and they have a rover on Mars. they
A slight correction - DUV is economical down to 14nm and completely viable at 10nm. It's only sub-10nm that you really need EUV for
You’re correct and the Chinese have figured out how to use it down to 9nm in the latest kirin chip models but some say they got the recent batch from tsmc.
@@portcybertryx222 it's totally possible to make 5nm chips with DUV. It's just not economically viable to do it - they would cost at least several times as much as 10nm for only moderately better performance. The Chinese government could definitely subsidise the crap out of them for a propaganda exercise though
we pay you through views

He is totally wrong on the semiconductor story.

I love your videos. Yes, I'm too cheap to pay. Not that it's "too much" per se, but that I simply can not practically pay for every channel I enjoy (as so many are shifting that direction). So I'm sure I'll still watch some videos from you, yet I predict (and I definitely could be wrong) that you'll see a sharp drop in viewers. With a week delay, most news stories have been covered in depth by multiple other sources. Leaving you behind the curve and old news by the time you release videos on TH-cam. Perhaps, financially on your side, it's still beneficial to go that route.
