Best Wood Working Workbench Ever...?

  • This video takes you through the construction of my new Woodworking Workbench. Inspired by Chris at Third Coast Craftsman, i decided to make my bench a hybrid of two of the most popular workbench styles, the classic English Nicholson and the French Roubo. With the vises on the Roubo side and the array of dog holes on the Nicholson side, the possibilities are nearly endless with ways to hold your work securely to the bench. I put a little twist on the design by Chris and made it a split top with a handy gap stop that makes for quick work of adjusting the height of basically a large planing stop.

Overall it’s a decent table. If you’re not using it for big heavy projects. Its gets unstable when using my jigsaw and handsaw. Table starts to shake and lifts off the ground. Maybe I’m doing something wrong? Also the folding mechanic works great th-cam.com/users/postUgkxyFZUPFEey-PuqsPMxqaykBhgA1LWxFHh when setting up, but I can’t get the table to fold down. It gets stuck 3/4ths on the way down.

A refreshing video of a high-quality build without using zillion dollar machinery like so many other TH-camr's. This is inspirational to budget minded woodworkers and shows how it doesn't take much to do quality work. Well done.

My dad had the ultimate workbench in our basement when I was a kid..... The legs were 3" black iron pipe with flanges for feet, and to attach to the underside of top. Top was 3" thick, not sure how it was put together.... a HUGE plumber/multipurpose vice on the front.... You would be hard pressed to find a vice like this anymore.... 3/4" pipe with screwed on balls on either end, 2' long drove the screw. I would have loved to have dragged this thing to Colorado to put in my basement. The bench could NOT be made to move the slightest, no matter WHAT you were trying to persuade in the vice. This cobbled together bench was rather typical of how my dad did everything.... Functional, but a little weird.... and at the time, I considered cheap... I lacked the maturity to appreciate up-cycling and achieving something BETTER than you could get at SEARS.

Great bench! I am building what started as a "Paul Sellers" style English bench but have been changing features as I went. I removed the tool well and was going to make a wide (27" or so) solid top laminated top, but ended up gluing together two 12" wide sections (max of my workspace/clamps/ablity to move the top alone) so was thinking of an open center portion like yours, but didn't think of the ablity to create a stop! I was just going to use it as a position to place clamps if needed. A lot of great ideas in this bench I can incorporate into mine!

Yeah maybe a bit overbuilt. I definitely made the top too thick. So thick my holdfast won’t work. Guess i got to back-bore the dog holes on the bottom. I picked up a couple Scandinavian holdfast and they work , but take longer than a couple whacks from a mallet to set the traditional holdfast.

As a Monday morning quarterback, here goes! For all the work, I would have made legs from multiple laminations.... maybe recover some salvage cutoff of lambeam, if available. Been in the door hardware business and found the finest lumber is still a tree, full of oddities that will tend to warp, twist, cup and otherwise move. For the top, though some will cringe... MDF makes a really good core.... 4 sheets of it, then laminated two inch lumber atop and around all edges is a good option for a perfectly flat, never twisting, non historical, heavy and functional top that will NEVER wear out, or warp. This is also excellent for custom doors that will NEVER warp.

Melamine is your best option if you are going that route. I used local wood from a local sawyer and this bench grew, got sawed, dried and turned into this bench all within a 30 mile radius. I like supporting my local business 👍🏻 and much prettier results in my opinion, but the true moral of the story is just BUILD ! Thanks for watching 😉

Can't believe you have built almost the exact bench i've got in my mind, rite down to the retractable castors. watched countless videos over the past year, this is the closest to what I want to build but I really think I am going with a leg vise and the sliding deadman. Still not sure about an end vise option.

It really is the best of the designs i saw out there. Although i will admit that i use the Roubo side FAR more, but when i need the Nicholson side for mostly live edge work, it’s very handy to have that versatility.

Thanks so much for the kind words! I’m definitely not where i want to be with my video production but I’m a long way from where i started! Don’t think I’d want to pay freight charges on a bench like this. Probably would cost more than the materials and hardware to build it yourself. If you really want to make your own. I put FREE plans on the website you can follow. Reach out if you have any questions.

Nice work on the bench. I don’t mean to be negative but do not stand off to the side of your table saw as seen in this video. It is dangerous not to be in the best place of control which is behind the saw. Believe me, I understand the concern some people have about being in the line of fire for kickbacks and I’ve seen them too. Respect your equipment and learn the proper technique and you minimize your chances of injury. Thanks for reading and keep woodworking!

Beautiful workbench. My only criticism is that it's too nice to use. Subscribed.

This sort of DIY videos is no more than a flashy DISPLAY and a CONTEST to show up who has the best tools in the industry.

SERIOUSLY.... what video did you watch? Everything in my shop is hand me downs or cheap Craigslist finds. Making a $100 bench in a 15x15 shop....

Why did you pass the edge before the face through the jointer?
And as the final bench top will need to be reflattened in time, did you check to make sure the grain of each board is facing the same way so you can hand plane later

Very nice. I think I'd like to build one from your plans. Is there anything you would have done differently in hindsight? Thanks for the great video and inspiring others.

How much of a difference do you find between the Danish Oil and Boiled Linseed Oil?
I have Linseed already. Just wondering if I should try something new.
