    I was about to tear my bike apart out of shear frustration then i watched this and saw the hammer trick. The bike is saved. Thank you.

    So true. Nothing like watching a DIY video from someone who has every tool available and a bike that doesn't actually need any help. I like the true DIYs too!

    CJHoyle,
    THANK YOU VERY MUCH for all of your bike maintenance videos. I really owe you a debt of gratitude. I really enjoy my bike riding but my cheap Toys 'R Us $99 mountain bike was running rough. It gave me so much grief, worry, and frustration. I found many bike service vids here, but only yours were straight forward, useful, and helpful. It made a huge difference and my bike is running great now. I ride with confidence and relaxtion now. What a joy. Thanx again for all the vids.

    I didn't have a hammer but a shovel did the trick to release the forks from the stem. Thanks. I would have spent hours getting frustrated if you hadn't shown that trick (I don't think anyone else on TH-cam shows it).

      I agree, but I find it very funny to imagine a guy hitting a bike with a shovel, ideally in the middle of a busy street and all the looks you would get :D Seriously, how don't you have a hammer?

    You've read this a thousand times...thank you for making and posting this video! I had the general idea for raising handlebar height, but since there was resistance, I did not do anything until confirming, from your video, that it's okay to apply some force to do this. I now know my headset is threaded. Thanks mate, my handlebar is now raised to a comfortable position!

    I'm glad you've been finding my videos helpful, thanks for subscribing! I've been wanting to make a series of videos about winter commuting for a while now, hopefully I'll get the chance this winter. In terms of maintaining the chain, really the key is just to use lots of chain lube (oil) to dilute the salt and reduce the rusting. You'll notice after a day of riding on wet salty roads that it probably will get dry and squeaky. I just add more lube, and clean the chain at the end of the season.

    I just recently buy this bike (it's brand new). I think you're right about incompatible parts, though it seems odd for a folding bike to use such kind of parts. I haven't use this bike at all, due to the problem, because as you say, it was a safety hazard to ride it in it's current condition. Well, seems I need to visit the manufacturer's authorized repair shop nearby to have them look at the issue. Will inform you again when it's done. Thanks for your reply btw.

    Great video for old school fork setups. I bet that design is super stressful on the tube over time, considering it's pushing extreme forces from inside towards outward.

    Great informative video, i tried to swap the fork of one bike with another (one has suspension and one doesn't) but the diameter of the stem is too small for the frame. Is there some sort of converter i can use to upsize it?

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is the bolt head actually shaped like a torx, or is it still a hex? Unless it's shaped like a torx then there should be an allen key that will fit it too. Torx are pretty rare on bicycles. I have heard of people using torx bits instead of hex when they are in a pinch. Since torx have 6 points, they will fit into the 6 corners of a hex if you can find one that's the right size.

  • @jupo.

    Thanks for this video! i bought a similar used bicycle online and when it arrived I found out that its really a piece of junk.. The handlebars are crooked and I think i need to replace the stem. The crankset seems to be pretty bad too because if i put too much pedaling force to them it just jumps forward making riding uphill nearly impossible. Im pretty new to bike repairs. Anyways, this should help a lot! Time to check out your other videos.

    Nice video, Thanks. My headtube seems to be a T-40 Torx. I tried all my hex wrenches both metric and standard and not one of them fits right. But my Craftsmen T-40 fits it perfect. I'm curious if it really do sometimes use Torx for older (1994) Huffy bikes, or its just coincidence it fits so well.

    Hey, thanks for the video. I have the same problem with my bike that you had. The fork is shaking when I use the front brake. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem without replacing the fork?

  • @bassyeti85
    @bassyeti85 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Threaded fork/stem generally have a 1" tube size. Threadless fork/stem will usually have a 1 1/8" tube size. its pretty ease to tell the difference. a 1" generally has the stem inserted into the fork while on a 1 1/8" the stem will clamp to the outside.
    A couple of things to consider when swapping forks:
    obviously wheel size. 16" - 700c
    Axel size:some road and mountain bikes made for a quick release system will have smaller dropouts.
    Brake Mounts: weather it is U, V, Y,etc

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Are you saying that you have unthreaded the top bolt completely and you can't hammer it down any further? Have you tried rocking it back and forth? If the wedge is completely unreachable from the top, you also have the option of removing the front wheel and accessing it from the bottom. The long bolt should thread into the wedge from the bottom and you can try putting on the bolt, instead of pushing. If you make a video showing your problem I wouldn't mind taking a long and offering any advice.

    I shall now be combining the two.

I'm planning to replace my fork and buy some new and expensive but i have one problem is there any heavy duty fork with suspension that is able to fit in the head tube of my MTB? Bcause most of bikes that i had seen with the same type frame of my MTB had a small distance between the two sliders which i don't like..

    I bought this bike in the summer of 2008 for $35 used. It served me well for 2 years as my primary committing bike. When I got my 'green machine' in 2010 I started using my black bike mostly as a backup. In the spring of 2012 I sold this bike for $35. I sold it because it has always been a really heavy bike and I knew I was going to eventually upgrade to something aluminum During the time that I had this bike I think I put at least 6000km on it!

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  13 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Sevensicketytwo Has the stem not been touched in a really long time? I guess it's possible that the two surfaces have both corroded really badly, the way that seat posts sometimes do. If the problem is corrosion then you would need some type of chemical to breakdown the rust to get it unseized. I have never dealt with that problem on the stem of a bike before. Sorry I can't be of more help. Let me know if you get the issue resolved, I am interested!

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have never done it before myself, but I imagine that it is possible to switch from a threaded to non-threaded headset. Just verify that it tube is long enough to fit through your frame and that the old fork and new for have the same tube diameter and beading cone size.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm sure there are websites that you can order them from, but I don't have any experience with any particular one. My advice would be to just go to your local bike shop and ask them about ordering forks. Depending on the size of the shop, they might not have any in stock, but they will have a catelog with many many choices that they should be able to order them for you with.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Did you try hitting it with a hammer, the way that I showed in this video? From your description it is really difficult to understand the issue that you are having. If you make a video showing and explaining the issue on your bike I can definitely take a look at it and give you whatever advice I have to offer, and explain how I would approach the situation.

    Hi can I put an expensive front suspension fork on my cheap old full suspension bike? How do I make sure the forks will fit and are not the wrong size, thanks!

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does your cheap full suspension bike have the same style of headset as the bike shown in this video (threaded headset)? If so, upgrading to high quality forks will probably mean switching to a non-threaded headset. I have never done it before myself, but I imagine that it is possible to switch from a threaded to non-threaded headset. 2 things that you definitely need to make sure of is that the tube of the new forks is long enough to fit through your frame and that the old fork and new fork have the same tube diameter and bearing size.

    My folding bike stem (it's a threaded one) is so loose that when I insert it to the headset it just slip all the way down . When I tighten the stem it still have play (turn to the left or right). I'm thinking of putting some tape around the stem so it will not be so loose anymore. What do you think ?

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I've seen that happen before. You should be able to get it to come free by hammering the bolt several times. Just keep unscrewing the bolt by a few turns and hitting it again.

  • @martinussuherman59
    @martinussuherman59 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi, I just want to inform you that the problem was solved. Turns out that I didn't tighten the bolt enough (was using a short Allen key) even when I've tried very hard to do it. Seems I need to look for a long Allen key in case I need to do it again in the future. Btw, I got a question about my hubs, I'll post it in your wheel hub tutorial where it's more appropriate. Thanks.

    what size adjustable did you use to loosen the lock nut on the head set?

    • @cjhoyle
      @cjhoyle  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's a 12" adjustable wrench, but I'm not entirely sure.

  • @cjhoyle
    @cjhoyle  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm really not sure what is available for what you are looking for. Usually higher end forks use the thread-less style of headset. If you buy them brand new, I think they come with a very long 'head tube' because the idea is that you will cut it to the length you will need for your bike, since all bikes are a bit different. If you're planning on ordering your forks through a local bike shop, just ask them to confirm that whatever you order will work on your bike.

    All I can really suggest is to find a wrench that is large enough to get a good enough grip on the cone so you'll be able to remove, maybe you know someone that you could borrow one from? If the cone was tightened on without a wrench, it really shouldn't take much to untight it. If you haven't tried this already, you should just try wrapping a rag around the cone to help you get a better grip on it and maybe you can rotate it free with just your hands. Let me know if you get it to work!
