    I have at least a dozen different Ganzo knives now, and the G740 is definitely one of my favourites - it's a highly functional design. I have three of them, and I keep one one in my little pot of utensils for barbecues and eating outside in the summer. It's great for slicing burger buns, salami, cheese, pickles etc. Ganzo gets a lot of criticism for copying other companies' knives, but as far as I can see, the G740 is an original design - anyone else know any different? Wish they did this one in camo, so I could buy another!

    I just got one in green. I really love this knife. The grip is a great size for my hand. 440c is really easy for me to sharpen. It works great for food prep. This knife impresses me.

      Thank you Michael. It's not my favourite, but I sure do find myself choosing it whenever I am going out into the country, the foothills of the Rockies or into the mountains. A big knife is a good knife sometimes.

    I like a flashy knife but a subdued one like this one has it's charms, classy straight forward design !

      Yes, it is a great knife and Ganzo does know how to make a good lock even in the axis style.

    These Ganzo are certainly built to be used, I agree. Of my modest collection of 10 pocket knives, both my Ganzos (G727, G729), followed by my Opinel, are the knives that I use for 90 percent of my chores. I often wonder which of my knives I would pick if I was allowed but one folder to own - probably my G729, though that G740 you just reviewed would also be one to consider.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for sharing that. I agree that either the G729 or the G740 would be good choices if a guy could only have one. BUT, now with their new harvest of knives coming out, I might have to pick one of those. I think there are like 5 new styles being released in the last few weeks and the next few weeks. Everything from the # G749 an up are NEW.

    IMO, "the ak47 of the folder world": simple & clean design, cheap, very cost-effective, it gets the job done, it is a good present. we just "use them and go". easy to sharpen. blade geometry is simple and great. a bought several at 12 dollars/each, gave them away to friends & colleagues. everyone is happy. better than that is to ask too much! best from Greenland!

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      clusterguard, you have just shared with us a cultural perspective that is good for us North Americans to hear. Greenland is a culture where knives are commonplace, anyone and everyone has a knife on their person at just about any time, is that accurate?
      It seems to me that in such a culture there is less fixation on fantasy knives (not that I have any, but there are knife collectors who focus on those, and a fair number of them too) and more of a focus on using a knife as a tool.
      I would suggest that Canada is sort of a buffer between the American attitude toward knives and the attitude in Greenland. We have a LOT of open wilderness, as you do, and many many Canadians are hunter type people, proprotionatly more than there is in USA. In USA there is a significant focus on knives for self-defense, we see less of that in Canada and you see even less in Greenland. Our politicians could learn from Greenland and stop seeing knives as dangerous weapons and moreso as tools.
      WOW, that was a long response, sorry for writing a book when a sentence would have been enough.

    • @clusterguard
      @clusterguard 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      es, I agree. In Greenland, there is a "tool framework" more oriented to functionality rather than aesthetics. IMO (it probably holds true in Canada and Alaska, as well), there is a very important criticality in the flawless operation of a tool in life-threatening situations (which may come up any time in such adverse environments). Everyone uses (and carry) knives over here and there is neither (government) control nor registrations of any kind of hunting weapons and accesories. It is a true hunter society. Funny is that people over here do not talk about football or cars but on boats/marine engines, weapons, ammo, game and not the least knives. They value such tools very much and they are never thought to be used for "self-defense" but for hunting and survival-in-the-field. All the best to all from Nuuk. Cheers!

    Very good review, Mr CCE. How would you compare the G740 with the G727, which I happen to own, and which they seem to share some qualities in common? Thank you.

    Ganzo doesn't do any marketing here that is why it is not a best seller here in the USA.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Exactly. I do think that they have plans to start advertising in USA. I think that is the main reason why they are adding the "Firebird" line of knives, to make the brand more attractive to the West. Ganzo sounds so odd to most people, but every red blooded American boy knows the word "Firebird" and it has the connotation of strength and hot-rod and coolness. That is just my sense, I have not heard any news from them in this regard. I won't be surprised to see some kind of advertising in North America soon. I don't know where knife makers advertise to start with, but wherever other brands advertise is where I think Ganzo will start having some by the end of 2017, if not much sooner.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      interesting. When did you get your G740 and where did you buy it from. Perhaps they are going back to their existing models and are lightening them. They got a LOT of feedback from reviewers like me and others that their knives were too heavy for the average knife guy, in North America anyway. I personally don't mind the weight but many do. Do you have a kitchen scale you could use to weigh your knife, I am curious how much it weighs.

    • @pineappleflowers1773
      @pineappleflowers1773 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Canadian Cutting Edge. I bought the knife about 4 weeks ago on the gearbest site. i also bought the g741 but that wasnt milled out. and also it has another logo on the blade its called FIREBIRD. sorry i dont have a scale.

    I love this model. Do you know any other Ganzo or Sanrenmu knives which have a finger choil on the blade? That's what makes this knife all the more fun to use!

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, FifoTom, is this your first time commenting on this channel?
      Ganzo has a few half-n-half blade choils. Where a sneak up choil is half on the handle and half on the blade:
      G729, G730, G732, G734, G737 to name the ones I own; you hve frame lock, liner lock, and axis lock in that list.
      As far as Sanrenmu goe - the tiny 6044 has a half-n-half and that is all I know of, there are two that I sometimes hold like that but they are not designed for it: 7033 and 7056 - I use their flipper tab and grab in front of it sometimes.
      You May want to watch one of my newer videos because something special is inside it: th-cam.com/video/QtDbt8YVnis/w-d-xo.html

      Doing a Harnds CK6015 and a Ganzo G740 comparison video might be a lot of fun. I might do that.

      thanks i want to buy full flat blade (i was not happy from spyderco tenacious - too high price in Polnad for that low quality - liner lock fall too deep ect.) but i got chose problem; viper have better steel (9Cr18MoV i think is better that 440) but G740 have axis lock..
      I think also on Enlan L05 but now they sell full flat only in wood handle (few ears ago they sell Bee L05 full flat in g10...) but i dont like opinel, not water resist :(
      Ganzo in China realy used 440 steel or 12c27 sandvik (they need to buy that steel from europe)or that is 8cr13mov ?? In other spyderco i have aus8 and that is better than 440 or 8cr13mov but is similar (not talk about hardenes proces in other facilities).
      In my opinion sanrenmu line LAND 909 and 962 MC(i lose that knife in my work ;(( ) blue is best china made edc knives;)

    I keep getting knives with stripped screw heads .do the make easy outs that small?

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't know of an easy out tool that is that small.
      Some of the newer Ganzo hardware is too soft. It happened when they started with the blue hardware. I so wish knife manufacturers would learn that top quality screws are very important to keep customers happy.
      Also, it is super important to have good quality screw drivers. I highly recommend getting some "Made in Germany" Torx screw drivers - I have less stripped screws since I started using better drivers. The cheaper ones are often just slightly out of spec and when coupled with cheap screws it is a recipe for problems. So if you don't have high-quality drivers then you might want to put that on your list of things to buy for your knife hobby.
      www.kctoolco.com/ - check out German tools here - but probably buy elsewhere...

      Those knives with bearings that are coming out is where my next dollars will go, but that is because I already have most of the other ones. check out ganzoknife.com anything numbered G749 and higher looks like it has bearings but they don't even mention it on their site, I told them they should shout it out in BOLD letters, but I don't think their website people know how big a deal it is.

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Do you really think that the North American knife lovers are that finicky that they only want low cost versions of big name brands? I guess that that is possible, but I still think that it is because it is rather plain looking, but you may be right. I will have to think more about that possibility.

    • @tubepiggy888
      @tubepiggy888 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      To start with, low cost for sure. In big name brands, a certain model that sells a lot could be in the design that is very functional or practical disregarding ' who ' makes it. That's where Ganzo comes in.Tell me if I'm not right, Jake, that the shape and grind of the e.g. Griptilian or Para 2 are exceptionally good for just about any task beside heavy duties. Anyway, just my guess, what do I know ? I don't even have a channel ! hehe

    • @CanadianCuttingEdge
      @CanadianCuttingEdge  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes, I think the shape of the handle on the Grip and Para2 are VERY good, and if a knife is comfortable in the hand it will get a lot of recommendations. I still think that a very many knives are sold as a result of recommendations from face to face friends, though this TH-cam thing certainly generates sales as well. A knife that is comfortable in hand will indeed get recommended at lot.
      What is unique about this knife is that it is a BEST SELLER outside of USA and Canada, but in USA and Canada sales are only so-so. Therefore there must be something other than how good the knife feels and cuts going on there, and the only other thing is the looks of the thing. Somehow us Canadians and Americans (In MY mind) also put how a knife looks VERY high on our list when we go to choose whether or not we will buy it. For us, it is not only how comfortable the knife is in hand, nor how well the knife performs, but it must also have a strong visual appeal if it is to get a strong following here. It seems that people in places like Denmark don't put the looks of the knife very high on the list, as evidenced by the fact that the G740 is a best seller there even though it looks relatively plain and simple.
      I am one of the crazy guys in regards to the grind of a knife. I don't talk about it much but I really don't think that a hollow grind and a flat grind knife really cut that much differently from one another in the average EDC type tasks (cutting tree products - paper, cardboard, etc). The grind on the very edge is the critical point (no pun intended) that determines how well a knife will EDC, and that also has a lot to do with steel type in terms of how long a blade will hold that edge.

      The Ganzo G740 is excellent. I carry it often and it holds up well to
      hard use. Very affordable. You get a lot for your money. I choose orange so I do not lose another knife in the field during a night boar hunt. I highly recommend this knife.
