    Robert, thank you!!! OMG, soooo brilliant. In just one hour
    of re-routing and re-balancing I brought a big mess of a mix
    back from the dead... Ha! plus this dual-mono thing is insanely
    smart, because you actually DO get more depth and width and clarity!
    Ha! who knew?!

      Who knew we needed more or that side-to-side multimono compression in our mixes?? Really glad you've enjoyed this method. I absolutely love using it too. I'll have to do more Brauerizing videos in the future!

    Lots of great info here...the compressors on the master buss though seems wrong. He uses the ssl on the board(or currently with his control console as a plugin) and then he has options like the germanium with a heavy use of the dry wet mix, the Manley, shadow hills or the API. He uses whichever one seems to work best. I've seen him use the germanium often. Also will use the curve bender if he feels it needs it. I Have never seen him use as Avalon as a compressor on the master buss. He will use the Avalon for eq in the B group.

    Thanks so much for the great overview. EQ processing after the vocal compressors or just on the individual channels? Also, other online sources talking about this don't spell out like you do that the buses are verse 1, verse 2, chorus 1, etc. rather they take the lead vocal track, split it up to separate tracks for verse, bridge, chorus, and then bus send where you can dial in a combination custom to each section. You method here seems like you'd have to automate the send levels or something for each section. Food for thought.

  • @hinder10709

    FYI The Fairchild he tends (tended?) to use on vocals was a 666 which I think was an Opto compressor vs the Vari-Mu of the 670/660. A different device altogether.

      Both Great ideas, you could try treating the drums on a bus before merging them with the bass on B, sure. I've tried that before. Never sent the cymbals to A though, that could be cool. keep thinking outside the box like that! so many possibilities.

    Great vid some really useful info here. You suggest CLA comps for bus duties but as far as I know they can not be unlinked for dual mono, do you split the tracks and use two comps?

    • @LearnAudioEngineering
      @LearnAudioEngineering  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey thanks for watching. You should be able to open the plugin in multi-mono mode when selecting it from the plugin menu. I've been able to do it with the CLA2A in protools and logic.

    • @fusedguitar9507
      @fusedguitar9507 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the quick reply. I was under the impression that the mono CLA compressors are single channel with only one detector. A stereo instance being two channel also with one detector. I contacted Waves support and they said to operate any of these comps unlinked you will need to use two comps. Might be worth taking a look at this. I can put a multi-mono signal into the comps as I use Reaper but it is still being compressed as as one.

    What's the proper use of the "Delay Compensation" mode? I've been using the Bauerizing method for a while and can never tell the difference from when I use delay compensation or not. When do you know if you should use it? Are there any disadvantages to using delay compensation?

    • @alexbreyer6921
      @alexbreyer6921 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's something I have kept on from day one after UAD recommended it. Logic compensates for the latency by calculating the amount of latency caused by plug-ins, and then delaying audio streams by an appropriate amount, or by shifting instrument and audio tracks forward in time. It's something you won't hear or feel, just let it do the math!

  • @WheelieMix

    Did you have a suggestion for the "Avalon 1:1" replacement in the box. In the video you just mentionned : "When can just not compress". But you already know that the thing about this Avalon is the color it imparts to the sound.
    I use compressors the same way on my mixbus (Pendulum or Culture Vulture Phoenix) and I am having hard times finding alternatives to that 1:1 "tonebox" enhancement in the box for easier recall (I already tried VCC, NLS and such). If you have any suggestions :).

    • @LearnAudioEngineering
      @LearnAudioEngineering  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! the Beatles used to do this with the Fairchild, and it's commonly done with Neve1073s (run it through the EQ circuit without EQing for more color) So I use the Puigchild if I'm looking for that, or I just use the SSL Bus comp instead. Thanks for your comment :)

    • @WheelieMix
      @WheelieMix 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I've heard about this 1073s trick. Apparently tightens up the low-end and adding some midrange and saturation. Definitely a nice trick to try, and way easier on plugins than on hardware (always get freaky with that high-shelf, you never really know if it's properly set at 0). I will try with 1073 plugins.
      For Fairchild, that's indeed why I use the Pendulum for at the studio. So maybe I should try Puigchild, good shout. I liked the saturation of Slate VBC but the high-mid boost is not desirable to me (it would be perfect without this). Cheers :) !

      I recommend the Kazrog True Iron plugin for color and weight here. $40 and it has a great transformer "weight" to it that works similar to the tube "color"

  • @madmuso5
    @madmuso5 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    So is he using only sends to mix not the channels end fader? If thats the case how does he do a volume up ride on a kick drum for example, if you automate the kicks send higher its gonna hit the drum and bass buss comp harder effectively making the compressor turn the kick down. Unless he uses another send that bypasses the 4 busses to an "escape" buss.

    • @LearnAudioEngineering
      @LearnAudioEngineering  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes, often he will send to a separate, kick bus, and snare bus to work around the issue your described.

  • @PortoFinoww

    Great video! I have a question: the optional 1176 and the vocal compressors are to be used in parallel or in insert? I think it has to be parallel (don’t think it’s a great idea to compress a vocal three times in a row but just to be clear). And then, I always find the 1176 to be a little too fast on my drum sounds (I mostly do EDM and Hip Hop) could an api 2500 be a better choice?

    • @LearnAudioEngineering
      @LearnAudioEngineering  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Paul, just saw your comment.
      Setting the input low will likely not trigger any compression.
      Cranking the input gain will amplify the source to reach the threshold of the compressor, which will cause more gain reduction and add more of the 1176 'character'. Start with 1-3dB of gain reduction, especially for most of the Brauerizing stuff. Experiment and find what feels right. Thanks for your comment!

    Thank you very much. Subscribed. I do have a question. I know that Brauer typically doesn’t do this kind of mixing but, I want to try his set up with Techno. I use an API 2500 on my drum bus to get a nice pumping sound with the relation to the ever present kick. Does Brauer use other bus comps on grouped elements before hitting the “Brauerized” busses? If done lightly, (ie, not over compressed) do you think it could work? Thanks!

    • @LearnAudioEngineering
      @LearnAudioEngineering  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      that's a good question, and I'm sure you could 'sub-buss' a few instruments together before hitting the B bus (If I'm understanding you correctly). HOWEVER, the more busses a signal must pass thru will drastically increase the risk of latency. This is why Brauer says his approach cannot be replicated ITB.
      Don't let that discourage you from trying it out tho! thanks for watching!

    Maybe a dumb question, but if one does *not* ride the fader post-comp in favor of mixing *into* it, how would one boost, say a lead vox, instrument or effect, other than very subtly? What if i want to boost something more than a couple of dBs? Wouldn't the comp just clamp down harder on the source? Great video BTW, thank you for posting!

      Hey, great question. I suppose in that case you would send that instrument straight to the mix bus so it's not affected by ABC or D bus compression. That way it can stick out without affecting the compressors balance across an entire group.
      Thank YOU for watching!

      Everything, including the vocals go to VCA faders where he can ride the volume hitting the master. Looks like there is also a V bus he uses now in his ITB template.

    Just one last thing, and I’ll stop pestering you bro. In the video you say that he sometimes sends any of the 4 busses or even the entire mix through the mono 1176s, which I assume are panned to center. Wouldn’t this compromise the stereo image? Thank you for your patience and thoughtful replies.

      they're panned left and right

    Another newb question: Are the two 'extra' 1176s meant for individual mono instruments, e.g. kick/snare/vocal as opposed to a stereo pair? If this is correct, is each 1176 to be used on only one source at a time, or is it ok to send different mono sources to the same compressor (e.g. kick and snare)? Thank you for your time.

      Yep, just extra tools used to get a different flavor out of mono sources. iirc Brauer will often use one for kick and one for snare. You could try both kick and snare on the same compressor, and get something completely different that might also work.
      I believe these 2 compressors are meant to give some extra clarity and shape to important instruments that might not be able to be so forward in the mix without overpowering their compression group (ABCD) So anything that needs an extra push can be sent to one of these,.
      but adding too much results in the same problem again, and then you'll need an additional 1176 bus for your 1176 bus and that's where latency just ruins everything completely. so layering these busses would be done best in moderation. Great question! thank you for watching :)
