- Penny Rainbow's house on the river Mole, in Esher, is unlike any other in Surrey's swish stockbroker belt. Now known as Wayneflete Tower, it is also sometimes referred to as Wolsey's Tower on account of the fact that Wolsey stayed there for a time after he was compelled to give Hampton Court to Henry VIII.
Penny wanted to know what her palace would have looked like five centuries or so ago. Over three days Time Team pieced together the story of a site that evolved into one of the most stunning buildings of early Tudor times.
Tony and the Team set about digging up her garden as they tried to identify what might remain of the palace, built towards the end of the Wars of the Roses for the fantastically wealthy bishops of Winchester.
Penny Rainbow is a refreshing owner: not afraid of the lawn being messed up by the digging and even helping Phil with the digging herself! I know, I know: the lawn is a holy grail to all Garden owners in England. I mean grass can and will grow back again with time. But finding archaeology is priceless compared to a regrowing lawn. Especially with the archaeologists being so enthusiastic like in this episode. And Time Team puts back the grass and fills the trenches back again with the soil after having finished the dig which is not filmed since it would be boring for us viewers as Tony puts it in other Time Team episodes.
Looks like Penny put it up for rent in 2017, after she built an all glass extension and a riverside patio. She also wrote a book about the history of it.
Phil is an absolute treat. He reminds me of how the gardener in The Secret Garden is depicted.
Phil is adorable.
It was awesome to see an enthusiastic, smart owner for a change. That definitely makes this one of my favorite episodes.
I was nearly moved to tears by Penny’s enthusiasm for the quest. You could tell she didn’t want them to stop. I certainly hope she and Phil stayed in touch. This is perhaps my favorite episode of Time Team.

she ended up writing a book about the entire history of escher place, and with the kids entirely grown and finished collegre, she leased the property to another family and moved.

@@kellyreilly-robinson2130 Right? As a Canadian I know that there is far less to see for me under the ground. Unless perhaps there's some ancient Native finds to be had, but I'm in Montreal with no real yard of my own to speak of so *shrugs*. If I were a home-owner in a location that may have rich archaeology like the UK, I'd absolutely be giddy to see such work in my garden. Yes I'm sure there's at least some expense on my part, though probably most of it being covered by the state here so yeah. Win, Win in my book.
My favorite episode yet, and kudos to Ms. Rainbow and your obvious enthusiasm for history and knowledge. What a treat to live in such a space.

I laughed, a lot, when I heard "Mick the Dig" now being referred to as "Mick the Twig"! A nice touch! I'm watching this whole series in chronological order, including the specials in sequence. I just love the camaraderie, the rivalries, all of it! I've learned so much and am thoroughly entertained. I didn't even know this show existed until less than 3 months ago! Thank you so much for uploading these. It must have taken a lot of time to do, but it is so very worth it! I don't have TV service...can't afford it! Nothing this good on the air in the US anyway! Donna Perez bout time tho mick twig had a haircut and a shave he's still a tool.
Mick died in 2014.
This reference was to Michael Worthington: (Wiki) "Mick ‘the dig’ Worthington, an excavator in the early series, occasionally returned as a dendrochronologist, whereupon he was dubbed 'Mick the twig'. He spent seven years as the excavation supervisor for Time Team before deciding to specialize in dendrochronology. It was a while ago, I think (High Ercall, Shropshire - 2002?), that Tony first referred to him as "Mick the twig" when he did his first dendro test for the show. He used to have a beard and long hair. When he returned he was clean-cut. Last I saw, he had short hair and a grey beard...and he is still with us...living in America. The great Mick Aston passed in the summer of 2013.

Donna Perez I can't afford TV service either and I doubt I would get it if I could afford it. Programming in the States is terrible with the so-called "reality" shows and other mindless trivil. Like you, I am watching Time Team in chronological order except for the specials. This is a fantastic series and hardly a day goes by without me watching at least two or more episodes. This is mind building entertainment as opposed to the mind numbing entertainment normally shown on TV.

Always my favorite episode, I wish all the owners were as enthusiastic as Penny. Just with her facial expressions and smiles you can feel her warm fuzzy feelings lol
A good looking, rich woman bats her eyelids and flashes her smile and they all start acting like teenagers, love it!

I'm grateful whenever a pretty blonde marries well to a plutocrat so she can make a nest for her brood and in the process preserves architectural history.
Love how Tony keeps calling it a "chapely thing." That's very Blackadder.
This was just wonderful to watch. I'd love to see more of that keep unearthed. How amazing to be the ones to find it after centuries of being lost.
This was one of the best time teams so far. I like them all, I am so happy for the owner. I am glad she is so happy too.

Stunning home yes, and Penny has a great personality, but stunningly beautiful she is not. She would be more attractive if she did something different with her hair I think, but who cares; it's the personality that counts and she wins by a mile.

Gatehouses were usually the strongest part of a fort or castle since they were the main entrance way. They were designed to be hard to tear down, so they tended to be left up after the rest is gone in time. It's actually quite common for old gatehouses to be turned into homes in Europe.
Penny's enthusiasm and humor makes her a gem in my book. Best of luck, Penny!

Interesting re Bishops of Winchester, is this Ember Court ? Penny is a real beauty her laugh is wonderful!
They should have used Jonathon more often. He was brilliant, he really made the place come to life and his enthusiasm is infectious. Sometimes I have problems visualising what they are describing, but not with Jonathon.
Penny's a nice lady. No nonsense and yes, attractive and successful, not a crime, that. I'm her postman. I think she does tours around the tower if you book, she used to anyway.

I'm just glad that she seems to really appreciate that lovely old place she calls home.

But that's Mick the Dig, now called Mick the Twig, who demonstrated in other episodes that he's a nice guy! I guess he's rather the quiet type.

... once again Phils' shovel unearths history. Not only did he show the keeps turret in one scrape of the blade but he inspired the landowner to expand the dig and get her own hands dirty finding more of it.

One of the best episodes of TT. Penny the property owner is an added plus. I believe many landscapers would love to create something out of that octagonal ruin Penny was so keen on.

+susan webb I guessed that she wouldn't cover it up. I think she's a bit of a magpie and really liked owning part of an ancient castle and showing off. Look how she reacted to the dendrodating. I think she's been showing it to all her friends and visitors.
@Susan Webb - if that were my gatehouse and garden I would have done the same thing. There is no way I would have backfilled those trenches ... especially the Keep. Spectacular confirmation for her ... I was thinking I would have reinforced those walls, put a small fence around the trench and just gloated over it forever :)
@Donna, Two different Micks: "the dig" is an archaeologist; "the twig" is a dendrochronologist. Different specialties, different men :)

Mick Worthington is an old member of the team. He used to be a digger in the early seasons of the show, and they called him Mick the Dig, I guess to tell him and Mick Aston apart when calling them. He left, then returned to the show as a dendrochonologist, and they gave him the new name of Mick the Twig.
+Fedra Haldane yeah, got a hair cut, a degree, and then moved to the USA in 2010 i think i read.. same person.. like most of the diggers and etc they all seem to have gone on to further education.. or maybe they just did not want DR. in the credits.. im pretty sure phill got his doctors too.

And let's not forget Mick shaved that formidable beard as well. Speaking of former TT regulars, did anyone see that Stonehenge docu on Smithsonian? Some TT regulars are on it like, Jackie MacKinley, Mary Ann Ochota (who was not nearly as clueless as on here) and Henry Chapman, who is no longer a surveyor, but a Senior Lecturer in Archaeology and Visualization at Birmingham Uni. Talk about moving up in the world!
ETA-- PS quite a few of the diggers are indeed DRs. Like Helen, who also did some digging for them in the 90s, they still just love to play in the dirt.

In so many of these programs, walls/foundations have been "robbed away." Yet here, the Keep's foundation is still there. Wondering how it wasn't robbed away as well.
Penny is the embodiment of the joys of an English public school education - very Ladies College, a polished roll your sleeves up jolly hockey sticks mixed with a Blue Stocking intellect - we used to have dances with the Ladies College at my school - I even played in a House to House hockey match, where the girls of Hatherley Court - a now sold off outlying House of CLC - against our House Court - Dean Close's best in school team - we lost 7 -3 and two of our boys ended up in A&E - one with a crack in his skull - these kind of Ladies play to win and to not takes prisoners..........;-)

@@mlr4524 Oh yes, it's definitely a thing. I think it has been a thing since humans have been humans -- and probably longer. The mating dance is probably the most readable body language out there. Find some unposed photos of a female celebrity and compare them with the posed ones. Also, watch young women when they're on the prowl. Once you see it, you'll think, "How did I not notice *that*?"

I don't think the owner plans to re-bury the base of that "keep".
Maybe this is a British thing or maybe a rule of nature thing, but does anyone know why they can't dig under the canopy of the tree? I know that's where the roots are but couldn't they just dig carefully and go around the roots? A tree that size has to have some wonking big roots after all. Also, doesn't a tree spread it's roots out as it grows? So if it was a root issue the roots would be all over not just under the canopy. This isn't the first time I've seen them do this on the show and why.......? Any ideas?
It is a general rule of thumb that a tree's roots extend about as far as its canopy. Any more or less than that and the tree's metabolic system cannot keep up.
The root system of a tree is a very fine web. There are as you say, wonking big roots, but also roots of every size down to about the width of a human hair. Any digging in the root system will hurt the tree.
Liz Suckow Exactly. Trees of that size would be weakened structurally by severing the main roots. The smaller feeder roots outside the canopy would grow back quickly however. I wonder if GB is losing the millions of Ash trees as we are in the US and Canada. Millions! The Green Ash borer is the culprit and arborists have not been able to get a handle on it.

Yes the demise of the Ash tree here in the US by the invasive emerald ash borer is devastating. There is now another invasive attacking oak trees, oak wilt. We can only hope technology catches up before they go the way of the American Chestnut and Elm.
+furrantee The answers above say it, but also - as an underwater archaeologist - I work in riverbanks quite often and tree roots are the bane of our existence oftentimes. With older trees, you risk undermining them and they fall on you and your wreck, and smaller ones have thin spiderly roots that get into everything. If you aren't careful during excavation, roots can destroy whatever you're cleaning/uncovering if they aren't dealt with properly. But, we deal as best we can with what we have.
It kinda sounded like he had to catch himself from calling him bishop baldrick just there.
